A lot of people do apparently.
>>

UK has them by th- oh. Right. EU.
>>
>>56191286
Yeah, there ain't any local ad's right now, looking at the history of a local sales site, some lucky dude got one for 3€ last year, on eBay I haven't found anything overpriced that's inside the EU.

>>56191296
Postage from the UK is still the same as before the brexit, I order shit from there all the time.
>>
>>56191291
I'm more surprised over people getting them to work on modern pcs without mods or adapters, since PS/2 voltages have varied over the years.
>>
>>56191303
How about Spain? They were super into Commodore, as was Italy.
>>
>>56191316
It's still 5V, but more modern stuff usually outputs lower amperage, that can be a problem on some systems.
>>
>>56191326
I think I'll try to find some local sites of various EU countries and search there.
I guess retro forums would be overpriced?
>>
>>56191328

did you ever figure what you're gonna do with them?
>>
>>56194219
I have to wonder though at what point does the "magic" of older hardware fall away to be replaced by the "samey-ness" of newer "old" computers? You can replace caps all day on an SE/30 but how many people are going to mess with the smaller less generalized components in junky P4 Dells with the same enthusiasm?
>>
>>56193334
I'd take a nice beige box anytime over the mid-00s black & silver shit. Especially the late-era CRTs with silver bezels, might have been cool and all back then, but it's just kitsch now.
>>
>>56194626
So you're implying one collects tech of one's own age?
>>
>>56194583
Why no love for the Amiga 2000 to the right?
>>
>>56194714
Whatever tries too hard to come off as "modern" in its own era (which those black/silver designs from a decade ago are arguably an example of) tends to end up being looked down at as kitschy in later years. The beige boxes didn't try-hard anything, they were just what they were (and if anything, it was equipments components what counted rather than looks).

>>56194583
The black NeXT stuff was pretty badass though, it looked classy back then and still does, kinda like classic Thinkpads. This is design that stands out done right.

Gotta adjust geometry a bit, that top right corner on the CRT doesn't look quite right.

Btw, where are monitor configuration settings stored, is it some kind of NVRAM backed up by a battery as with motherboards? That'd suck any battery is bound to deplete eventually and may not be easily replacable at all, and the monitor will keep losing settings if unplugged from mains power.
>>
>>56195001
Because there's a far cooler NeXTstation and an O2 right next to it.
>>
>>56194656
Maybe it's because old computers are different, be it because of OS or use case. From Windows 95 onwards everything is kinda the same, except with new bells and whistles.
>>
>>56194626

I am 23 and the only old tech I've collected is the c64 which as you probably know is from the 80s. I'm mostly interested in computers, and I don't see much of a difference between 90s computers and modern computers, ignoring computation power. On the other hand, 80s computers actually have unique designs which are interesting, after the 80s computers seem to have become more uniform.
>>
>>56199817
seems to be the case with most people I buy from. I just wish more people had done this over the years instead of tossing 'em out.
>>
>>56200099
Most people I knew back then would sell off the old machine to finance the new one. One of my friends went through a C64, Apple][, GS, and Amiga 500 over about three years.
>>
>>56190175

I bought an XT today. It was 40$ and well that might be too much, these things are more or less non existent here. I've wanted one for years and years now, and this is the first I've found.

>>
>>56201942
Hopefully you're right. It would be annoying to have a CRT monitor lose the capability to remember its settings (mainly geometry for different display modes). It's already annoying that the memory appears limited, as in if you try to configure too many different display modes then you'll find losing the config of some earlier ones at some point.

an option is to use ethernet with a small travel router like the wr703n with openwrt running as client. i imagine there isn't pre-xp wifi software that can do anything better than wep. with a desktop, you could probably wire it up inside the case with power direct off the psu. or maybe even an empty bay inside a laptop and find some leads to solder wires to!

Right now it has 12MB RAM with a small 4MB RAM expansion (proprietary), I will probably change the chips on it if I find any, better it I find a whole expansion and it has some Western Digital SVGA compatible graphics.

Just a normal CF to ATA adapter, had to update the BIOS, set the OS from DOS to Other and set the drive parameters all to 1 and then set BIOS defaults so it recognised the drive size but didn't change other drive parameters, that finally made it work nicely, but that's probably not the CF card fault but the drive size limitations.

>Western Digital SVGA compatible graphics.
Sounds a bit outlandish, but then again in the 90s and a bit in to the early 00s there was a whole wilderness of manufacturers for virtually any type of PC component. Sadly then almost all competition died out and it became races of very few or just two horses.

The majority of people get into this shit with some sort of nostalgic element. That said, I'm 22 and really don't give a fuck, I'll lust after '60s and '70s hardware as soon as I'll lust over something from the '90s or '00s, history is history, and good shit is good shit.

I do tend to prefer '90s hardware as far as what I prize and enjoy the most, though. It's a good blend of the power and usability of the modern era with the personality and the excitement of the early(ish) days of computing. It's much easier to put that shit to work without inconveniencing yourself.

>>
>>56206651
Maybe I should have said "too much", I found it difficult putting my XT to work for anything substantial when taking into account file transfers and dealing with format translation. Even newer PC hardware up to around 1994 isn't really all that fun to work with for a prolonged period of time, Windows 3.x is an unresponsive, braindead eye-assault, and I absolutely hate it.

I don't even really feel you lose out on much of that challenge with '90s hardware either, It's still ultimately slow as shit, there's plenty of software manicuring, hacking, research and consideration you can put into that shit to squeeze as much out of it as possible, it's just a more fluid and familiar experience, and the power of the hardware combined with the more thoroughly archived software base broaden the possibilities that much more.
>>
>>56206850
>slow as shit
Well, then you're doing it wrong, age appropriate software runs very fast.

>more fluid and familiar experience
That's because you're used to X86 hardware?
>>
Where can I find low color (256 color windows palette) wallpapers?
>>
>>56206677
>like the pentium
those things were just a clock-quadrupled 486, fifth-gen in name only with that PR number earned through sheer brute force, not design enhancements

attaching the 5x86 name to the hardware probably just helped low-end customers along by making them feel less daft for buying a 486 new in 1996

256 unique colors means nothing if they are not included in the palette.
>>
>>56206945
A 256 color palette is high enough to slightly shift colors as needed, it's not like with 8 colors that light green becomes light blue if you don't have the same palette.
>>
>>56206945
been looking into how windows handles palettes
it seems what it does is it reserves 20 colors (the 16 VGA ones plus 4 extra greys) that can't be changed, presumably to keep system elements looking correct
the rest are set by the focussed application, so presumably a wallpaper can use whatever so long as those 20 are part of the palette
>>
>>56206945
>>56206958
You can actually edit or load a palette in XnView.

I don't mean it in the literal sense. It's plenty fast when you run what it's supposed to run, but it's still limited like anything else. Even in the '90s hardware wasn't the virtually limitless canvas it is today.

>That's because you're used to X86 hardware?
I don't really understand what "x86 hardware" has to do with what I said other than the PC focus. I actually find the non-x86 side of things generally much, much nicer when it comes to practical pre-1995 computing, especially Mac OS and the SysVs.

Hello folks I'm here with a question question. As I understand the Hercules graphics cards were backwards compatible with MDA.

So Does this mean if I pick up an original IBM monitor for my XT that I can just use the Hercules card? That would be idea, but if I need to pick up a different graphics card I can.

I've read that maybe some non-Intel 486 DX4 CPUs are able to run in a 5v socket even if they're rated at 3v. How true is this? I'd love to be able to use one of those instead of stalking around on ebay until a 100 mhz overdrive pops up for god knows how much $$$

Not sure what you mean, but you need to find a 1802 or something. Doesn't make any sense to be using a monochrome monitor with that.

Digging that design, real clean and professional.

Not to be one of those annoying autistic types, but I'd throw a nicer optical drive in there that better matches the style when you can, never liked those drives from an aesthetic point of view.

Cool! How did you do it? Are you using that linksys in the background?
>>
>>56220407
Dunno about the Compaq, but 68k Macs are piss easy to get on the net. Quadras and Power Macs ship standard with on-board ethernet, older stuff can get it through NuBus cards or SCSI adapters, and all you need on the software side is usually a control panel and some basic network information.
>>
>>56220407
The Mac is connected to the Linksys with a AAUI Transceiver 10BASE-T, the Contura uses a PCMCIA WiFi card.

>Quadras and Power Macs ship standard with on-board ethernet
Quadras and early Power Macs use AAUI, Apples variant of AUI, you need a transceiver to use normal ethernet with that.
>>
>>56220919
Indeed, but they aren't too hard to get a hold of though, especially compared to NuBus ethernet adapters.
>>
>>56220934
Try finding one in Yurop without paying 5x the price of the item in postage from the US.
>>
>>56220956
Could see why it would be more of a bitch over there since they didn't sell as well, but is it that bad?

What's the shipping on this one for you?

$25, but there are cheaper than $18 ones too on eBay.

>>
>>56221027
Eugh, that is steep for what it is. And it definitely would take forever.

I wonder why they went that route anyway, I don't think I've ever seen it used on a network without a transceiver of some kind anyway so it kind of eliminates the "user-friendliness" they were going for, I guess RJ-45 wasn't really commonplace until a few years after they had already adopted it.

>>
>>56221159
Yeah, RJ-45 wasn't the real standard everywhere in the early 90's yet, I agree it should have been at least a normal AUI port then the proprietary Apple AAUI.
I can see the point in a AUI connector, saving space, because some places used 10BASE2, some 10BASE-T, etc.

I found mine in a local ad from 2009, called the guy up and he still had it, only wanted a few bucks. Pure luck.
That was a few days ago.
>>
>>56221232
What are you running on it? Does it have A/UX too?
>>
>>56220919
Anybody know a good email client for system 7?
I have an ancient version of eudora and netscape, but neither can deal with semi modern security, so I can't connect to cock.
>>
>>56221280
I'm not sure if there even exists something with support for newer security?
>>
>>56221235
Yeah, in a way I can't really fault them for pursuing a more compact and headache-free interface, AUI jacks were pretty bulk-ass and annoying to hook up, AAUI allowed them to better integrate ethernet into their systems without stealing valuable NuBus slots or sacrificing other interfaces.

But still, it's annoying as fuck for sure.

>>56221257
Literally the same one I'm using on mine, god-tier taste.

>>56221271
Still has the original factory 7.0.1 installation on it. I wanted to put A/UX on it originally but I figured I'd wait around for a 900/950 and do it right. Plus it's running beautifully, I can't see a reason to touch it.

>>56221280
Not a great answer, but I usually SSH into another host and use Alpine to check my mail, you might even be able to X-forward a graphical client too if you had an X server, but I've never tried it.

Feels like your options are pretty limited for native clients on pre-OS 8.6 boxes.
