I don't think very likely. NZXT's warranties the coolers for like 5 years. He just got really unlucky. I built it for him and everything was fine, for like four months. There wasn't any pressure or anything on the tubings either. Just really unlucky. NZXT is replacing his cooler and card though, so that's good.

Can't do anything about the cables unless I get a new modular PSU and get blue/grey sleeves for them to match the fans.

Hi /guts/, want to make a Pentium II era rig for the lols

where do i find new parts, are there still retailers out there with shitloads of overstock from the late 90's?

ebay has some stuff but its all marketed as "RARE, HARD TO FIND" and is thusly 400$ new as compared to the same 333mhz P2 used for 5$.
I found a new motherboard in socket 1 for like 40$, and a new Asus Geforce 2 for 20$, along with ram and shit pretty cheap
but id like a new pentium, preferably in its original box

same thing with all components really, original p2 era stuff in its box or at least still with the box

They are basically, even for encoding which can use a lot of CPU power, anything more than ~6-8 cores per project is passing the point of diminishing returns.

If you are encoding multiple projects at once, or have some specialized task that is very well threaded and can use all the cores, then it might be worth it.

But for the vast majority of uses old Xeons simply dont have the single core performance many of todays applications demand.

I haven't done a custom loop since a shitty, riced-out red affair for my old i5 750/GTX 295 back when I was 15, so indulge my stupidity for a second.

Is there any noticeable difference in temperatures with a huge reservoir? I ask assuming the larger total coolant volume would allow for more overall heat to be stored.

Depending the mobo, yes or not. Some dual-socket board are designed to work with both CPUs because one CPU work with some controllers and the other CPU with the another ones, but there are others boards which one CPU work with all the board and the other one give horsepower. In my case yes, It's usable with one CPU because her design

Here's the radiator removed.

As for your own build... >>56192449
7/10. If you watercool the GPU, and replace that missing PCI slot cover, I'll give you an 8.5.
>>
>>56192449
I will call yours a 6/10, mostly for your loop.

- It's running pretty warm for a two radiator setup, especially since just your CPU is on there. How high do you have it clocked?

- Your back run could be a little better so it doesn't have that curving loop.

- There must be a better solution than a super visible zip tie across the middle of your reservoir. Why not two black ones on the top and bottom of it, instead of where it's most readily seen?

- Do you have any intent on adding a water block to that 1080? I think you have the radiator and res headroom for sure.

- Consider removing your red PSU sticker for better color coordination.

- a nitpick, but your back exhaust could be a quiet AF120 to match your radiator fans.

Overall, you have great hardware that I assume you're using to push a fantastic 144fps on that display. Your system has potential to look as good as it performs.

I dont understand the principle of hard tubing. Is it just the o-rings that's holding tubing together. When using normal tubing the screw part tightens the rubber tube on its place so you couldnt even pull it away. What if you pull hard tube?
>>
>>56193022
There are two styles, push-in and compression. Both do actually compress to help seal. The regular "compression" style is similar to soft tubing compression. A barb, and screw-on piece, just with an added o-ring. The push-in style are similar to a QDC I believe, in that they have a small section of the fitting either pull up, or pull down, you slide the tubing into place, and then put the fitting in it's normal/locked position.

All the stuff before the P4 era has already been thrown out and recycled. Ten years ago it was cheap because there were tons and tons of old P2 computers around. Now there aren't, so it's become a collectible market.

Your best bet is to sit on craigslist and wait, or look for business throwing things out, garage sales by people who know no better, or find an electronics recycling place and see if they'll give you some of the junk that comes in.

I moved the stock H440 fans to the roof, but I think the fan closest to the front is sucking out cool air before it gets a chance to circulate?

The hardware has returned it's cost for several months now, I got into Ethereum mining early on. I also have a bunch of S7 and S9 Bitcoin miners that generate about $1000/usd pure profit for me now as well but I colocate those at a mine that has cheap power on the west coast.

It really depends on you, I like messing with hardware so it is a win-win for me. Right now it's a bit risky since Ethereum is going POS (you cannot mine it) in the next year or two.

disclaimer: im an nh-d14 fanboy
It's definitely worth it over stock coolers, and there are arguments for and against it verse closed loops.

When i bought this the h100i was the closest equivalent so here we go:
Noctua:
>cheaper
>quieter
>not quite as good at cooling as a h100i but pretty close
>industrial look
h100i
>more expensive
>louder (the pump is louder and the stock fans arent as good)
>better at cooling
>sleek look

Verse a stock cooler it is 100% worth getting one though, i run the fans super slowly so my temps are skewed but from stress testing last night
25c-35c idle (the room heated up)
45-50c normal load
60c after 30 minutes of aida 64 and furmark.

However with my fan curves how they are, the fans dont turn on at all on idle, and at 100% load they are still quieter than an asus strix 970

Why do so many of you use AIO coolers?
They cost more than air coolers but perform almost on the same level.
They are nowhere close to a custom water loop.
The headroom for overclocking on them is not that fantastic.

I am curious.

Why not go air or go true water?
>>
>>56224711
You're in a "look good" thread.
>>
>>56224763
How does a AIO cooler look good?
>Plastic Tubing that looks like a ribbed condom
>120 Rads that stick out more than your moms dick
>"Water Blocks" with huge rice logos

If you want it to look good, real water or real air looks way better.

AIO is saying "I want to be cool and do water cooling but am either too broke or too stupid to do a proper loop"
>>
>>56225107
I want a bit better performance than a Noctua NH-D15, but I don't want a HUGE chunk of aluminium and copper strapped on my motherboard.

I can spend $400-700 on a custom loop, or I could spend $30-40 more than the Noctua and get a 240-280mm AIO radiator.

Even if it only lasts 2-3 years, i'd gladly buy another one if it meant not having a huge ass heatsink and ugly poo fans in my build.

I'm sorry you're such an elitist your autism wont let you buy an AIO, but there is nothing wrong with them, and almost any 240-280mm radiator at this point with decent fans will outperform almost any air cooler on the market, sure the AIO will cost $30-50 more, but $30-50 more is an easy pill to swallow when compared to $300-500 more for a "real" water loop.

tldr, get over yourself, what you think isn't fact, it's opinion, other people have other opinion. If you dont get that, you're autistic.
>>
>>56225217
Facts are that a water loop will stomp an AIO.
Fact is that 30% increase in cost does not yield a 30% in performance from air to a AIO.
Fact is that the 120 rad with fans is not any smaller than most air coolers.
Fact is that we cool in order to be able to OC.
Fact is that a AIO cooler will not let you OC any higher than most air coolers.
Fact is, it's shit.

Sorry, not autism, but I don't believe in doing it half assed.
>>
>>56225248
Those might be facts for you, but not for me.

>Facts are that a water loop will stomp an AIO.
I already said this is true, and should be obvious considering the price difference
> Fact is that 30% increase in cost does not yield a 30% in performance from air to a AIO.
okay? We aren't paying performance here, half of what I was talking about was not having a HUGE chunk of aluminum and copper strapped to my motherboard, that's aesthetics, im not trying to beat an air cooler with my AIO....
>Fact is that the 120 rad with fans is not any smaller than most air coolers.
Who cares if it's smaller or larger? A radiator can be tucked out of the way, mounted on the top, front, bottom, etc. hell in some cases you can even mount the radiator externally, even with AIOs.
>Fact is that we cool in order to be able to OC.
who is this we? I didn't get an AIO to beat an air cooler OC. I bought an AIO to match a good air cooler OC while being out of the way and looking nicer.
>Fact is that a AIO cooler will not let you OC any higher than most air coolers.
I'm not really looking for it to do that, so okay? and a decent 280mm AIO will leave even the best air cooler behind by several degrees at load.
>Fact is, it's shit.
oh okay, more of your opinions...

You shouldn't talk about what you don't know about.

The truth is modern AIOs stomp on air coolers with comparable price and better compatibility. You'll find it hard pressed, if not impossible, to find an air cooler that can dissipate the heat of an OC'd processor better than that of a basic CLC with less noise and using less room.

>pumps are loud!
No, they're not.

Not to mention a sleek radiator looks significantly better than a large, finned, chunk of aluminum hanging off the center of your motherboard.

You can buy some starter kits for 150-200, which is only a small increase over a AIO
>okay? We aren't paying performance here, half of what I was talking about was not having a HUGE chunk of aluminum and copper strapped to my motherboard, that's aesthetics, im not trying to beat an air cooler with my AIO....
Why are you using a big cooler at all if you don't care about performance?
>Who cares if it's smaller or larger? A radiator can be tucked out of the way, mounted on the top, front, bottom, etc. hell in some cases you can even mount the radiator externally, even with AIOs.
How exactly do you mount it externally? Most of the time the tubes are way too short to do anything more that back, top or front mount.
>who is this we? I didn't get an AIO to beat an air cooler OC. I bought an AIO to match a good air cooler OC while being out of the way and looking nicer
You just said
>I want a bit better performance than a Noctua NH-D15
Do you want performance or not?
>I'm not really looking for it to do that, so okay? and a decent 280mm AIO will leave even the best air cooler behind by several degrees at load.

>You can buy some starter kits for 150-200, which is only a small increase over a AIO
Wait wait wait, I thought you didn't half ass things? But now you're telling me it's okay to go SUPER cheap on the custom loop? I have priced out what a good EK custom loop would cost me for my specific build, i'd be looking at a LOT closer to $700 to do it properly.

>Why are you using a big cooler at all if you don't care about performance?
I said I want the performance of a big air cooler without the big air cooler. I'm not looking for something to BEAT the air cooler though, you were implying i was trying to beat air coolers with my AIO, i'm not, I only want to match them.

>How exactly do you mount it externally? Most of the time the tubes are way too short to do anything more that back, top or front mount.
The EK predator AIO has hose fittings that can be removed, you can even add a GPU to the loop.

>Do you want performance or not?
I said I want a bit better performance, any 240-280mm AIO at this point will beat any Noctua, in idle performance, as well as load performance. I'm not looking for a 20C difference, just 2-5C.

Honestly you're just confirming more and more that you're autistic.

Not half assed, still open loop which you can expand on, upgrade and customize later on.

Also, 700 for a starter loop?

Where are you getting these prices?

Whats your setup/pic of guts, let me show you the way.

Wat

You can get 120mm AIOs all day for basically the same price (and even cheaper) than the NH-D14.

NH-D14 is $70
Corsair H55 is $75
Corsair H75 is $80
Enermax Liqmax II 240 is $83

etc.

Obviously the more expensive ~$120 units are going to be quieter and a thicker radiators. But the sub $100 units aren't exactly shit either.

>>56225517
Oh good, I can buy basically the cheapest custom loop possible from EK and get almost identical performance to my AIO which cost $60 less, even with the extra fans I bought for it.
>>

X99 5820k at 4.5GHz daily.

To make it worthwhile i'd need to at LEAST spend $350-400 on a kit, and i'd probably need to spend another $50 on extra fittings and various pieces and parts not included in the kit.

Just doesn't seem like a sound investment for something I have no need for when the AIO I purchased when I built this thing has been running fine and keeping my temps under 72c at load.

Could a nice custom loop bring those temps down? Of course, but it would be spending literally double what i've already spent and the temps, while they would be cooler, wont actually do anything. It's not like i'm getting more performance out of it, my 5820k is already at a voltage wall, I don't want to put more than 1.3v on it and a custom water loop isn't going to get me anymore headroom there.

Just seems like money down the drain because you can't deal with the fact AIOs are so easy a retard can install it.
>>
The difference between a custom loop and an aio/d15 will depend on the heat load. Under 125w you won't be looking at temperature differences, perhaps a lower noise on the custom loop because you have more surface area.

Once you go beyond 150w the temperature will remain the same on the custom loop but it'll begin to fail/overheat on the aio/d15.

That's all a custom loop does. It won't ever give you lower temperatures unless you're hitting the dissipation capacity of your current heatsink.
>>
>>56225643
>Once you go beyond 150w
Guess my ~200w 5820k at 4.5GHz with an AIO must be failing huh?

Going on 6 months of almost 24/7 operation now and i've never seen temps over 75c.
>>
>>56225683
My 5930k at 4.5 1.37v consumes 230w running prime95. Under a custom 720mm loop it hits 95c.

An aio will absolutely not be able to handle it because I know from first hand experience. I had a kraken 280mm on there before and it wouldn't even allow me to run the program without crashing.

Under normal loads it would perform admirably because the load wouldn't go beyond the 160w area. But not stress tests. No chance in hell.

why do you need so much voltage?

My 5820k hits 4.5GHz with 1.28v

I only had to go over 1.3v to get stable benchmarks at 4.7GHz.
>>
>>56225775
Also, I can tell you for a fact my 5820k sits at 4.5GHz all day doing encodes and never breaks 75c.

Maybe you had shit fans on your kraken?
>>
>>56225837
>>56225853
Because my processor is actually avx2 stable. Gaming/encode stable doesn't require more than 1.25v.

And it doesn't matter what fans I had. I used the stock 140mm fans running at their max of 2500rpm. It was loud and pushed a shit ton of air.

Unless you're working on AVX2 all fucking day, and if you are I feel bad because you're just wasting your time, AVX2 really has no place, even CERN wrote it off.

>>
>>56226392
Except mine doesn't... It runs at 100% load just fine, I run benchmarks, and stress tests besides P95 which is shown to potentially damage CPUs.

P95 hasn't been a decent stress test since the mid 2000s.

I have never had my computer bluescreen or shut down unexpectedly.

But hey, you apparently know more about my own computers stability than I do.

Maybe you just got dicked by the silicon lottery and I got lucky?

Trying to act like my CPU is somehow unstable when I have 20+ days of uptime is just silly.

well speccy hasn't been updated since december, and that update was only for a windows 10 fuck up, nothing to do with hardware detection.

Speccy is shit and always has been. However it's the lightest and easiest thing to run to get an idea of the hardware you have.
