I have a problem /g/entlemen. I just installed a 960gb SSD on my system (pic related) and it shows up in BIOS but not Windows 10. Right now I have Windows 10 on a Sandisk 240gb SSD (C:) and I have a 1TB mechanical drive (D:). The new drive is connected to power and all of the drives are connected via SATA cables, just bought new SATA 3 cables for the new SSD. Is there anything I should look into as far as software, before assuming the drive or cable is bad?

go to disk manager in windows and assign it a letter and/or format it

if it aint there boot a loonix live distro to check if the drive is there
>>
It doesn't show up in disk manager so you can format it?
>>
the problem is windows
>>
Use diskpart and check if it shows up as a disk/volume, select it and use clean. Clean will prep it for use in Windows.

Don't use the disk manager frontend when drives don't show up, it won't show them at all for some reason.

Also, to use diskpart you need a terminal open with admin privs or else you won't be able to do anything.
>>
bah, wiggled cables, rebooted and opened disk manager, it's there as disk 2. I just need to partition it. Thanks guys, sorry for the trouble.

good job. now you know that SSDs and most hard drives do not come pre-formatted since they can be used in a variety of systems and its up to the consumer to properly format and setup the drive.

Use a better operating system

That might be sage advice, but this was all my fault.

While I'm here, can anyone recommend a free program to migrate windows and all of my other data to the new drive? Plenty of options out there, I just want to make sure it's successful and not too risky.

Heaps on the net, but all of them have failed me. Every time I have attempted to migrate a windows install from drive A to drive B, it has failed. Just save all ya trap porn on external drive and do a clean install.

Use a gparted live image and clone the disk.
Physically disconnect it and check if all the data is on the new disk.
Reconnect it and wipe with gparted (if you don't do it Windows WILL have issues having two disks which are basically identical)

I forgot to mention one detail. My old drive is MBR and I want my new drive to be GPT. I need to make sure I can clone to GPT and have all of the needed partitions for it to work.

How to I clone from MBR to a GPT drive and have it bootable? My motherboard supports UEFI, I can select it in the BIOS. Right now it is in "LEGACY +UEFI" mode.

you dont, download clonezilla to clone the drive and then you can resize the partition after easily in disk manager
>>
>>56183859

A simple clone will make the drive MBR. I know I can do that and just increase the partition.

I want the drive to be GPT and boot using UEFI.

Kys, it's the only way to be sure you don't procreate.
>>
>>56184093
You can't. Just stop, you've already won the retard award. Windows cannot be migrated from mbr to gpt nor can it be migrated from classic bios to uefi. It has to be completely reinstalled because the bootloader has to change.

That is what I was talking about, but I thought it could be done. I'll just reformat the empty drive in MBR and do a simple clone.

Will do, anon
