Ok so now that Firefox is nothing more than a shadow of it's former self I'm looking for a good replacement browser. Preferably a Firefox fork so that I can still use all my add-ons.

What browser do you use and why?

How the fuck do I change the site suggestions to go back to normal. It covers up the whole fucking window what the fuck is this shit
>>
>>56172165
If you are running on GNU/Linux use Abrowser, it's a pretty well updated free and open fork without all the BS from the vanilla FF project.
>>
>>56172165
There isn't one. Why do you think so many people still use it?

Mozilla might be trying to kill it faster than /pol/ gets triggered by something. But that doesn't mean it's still not the best browser out there.

It's a shame Brave is going with it's shady, "pay for ads" thing, and it's using Chromium as a base, because otherwise that sounds like it would be neat.

Yes, but it's still just Firefox. If you don't like Firefox why would you use Firefox?

Don't get me wrong, it's probably better since it has some of the Mozilla taken out of it. But most problems that plague Firefox is also in Iceweasel/IceCat.

i have noticed when i have multiple tabbed videos open that firefox has been freezing up on me at times. it's so weird, it never used to do that. i'm on i5 2.8 ghz with 8 gb ram, not sure why this happens now. it seems to have started since the last update a week or two ago.

Honest question: what is the problem that people have with Firefox?
What do they mean when they say it's "slow"? Even on this old as fuck PC from 2007 it works OK. It's slow sometimes, but so are other browsers.
I can't imagine it being a problem on any modern PC.

Manpower, not know-how.

Creating a browser is not difficult conceptually, it's just that creating a feature-complete, modern browser requires years of work by hundreds of programmers. I don't give a shit how talented you are, you aren't doing that on your own

>>
>>56175353
Oh, and my favorite is when firefox locks itself up while autoscrolling (becomes unresponsive to mouse movements) because it's stuck in some infinite loop of scroll -> redraw -> scroll.

It becomes response again as soon as it hits the end of the page (in the direction I was scrolling)

Problem goes away if I switch from gtk3 to gtk2 but it creates other problems
>>
>>56175357
>people can't optimise their code and it's somehow the browser's fault
I bet you're one of those people who buy the latest meme graphics card too, just because developers are lazy and don't optimise anything thus relying on hardware to cover their incompetence.
Besides, I haven't noticed anything wrong with Firefox yet, it works on my machine ™
>>
>>56175353
I literally have an old AMD CPU from 2007 and don't experience that to any significant degree.
It used to happen in the past somewhat, but not nearly enough to make me switch, I never had to wait 5 seconds for a new window.
They improved it in the last version or two, the UI seems a bit faster now.

If you're not exaggerating then I can only assume something is wrong with your install. Maybe some bloated extensions.
I use FireGestures, uBlock Origin and a few smaller extensions.
>>
>>56175404
When devs dont optimize things and put out a shit browser that gets featurecreeped to the max, I uninstall their browser.

chromium is love, chromium is life
>>
>>56175411
>They improved it in the last version or two, the UI seems a bit faster now.
The last version or two made the problem a million times worse on my end

firefox 48 was the last straw that broke the camel's back on my end, because it degraded performance even further compared to 47. Every version has been continually getting slower and slower on my end.

qutebrowser on the other hand is an entirely different performance model compared to firefox: qutebrowser is stupidly fast but slows down if the interface content is slow (because qtwebkit is a piece of shit), so if you have a lot of tabs open or are on an image heavy site it slows to a crawl

qtwebengine should hopefully solve that, though, which is why I'm actively contributing to qutebrowser to make it the browser of my dreams
>>
>>56175452
Is this on Linux?

48 seems faster on Windows for me.
>>
>>56175480
Yes, on gentoo hardened. I'm running firefox inside a sandbox (which disables hardware acceleration) and on a PAX kernel (which disables JIT compilation on 48+)

No, fresh out of the box install (and I've literally never used it before). The only thing I *did* change to try and see if it helped was disabling smooth scrolling via
chrome://flags/
, which made it slightly better but still nowhere near as responsive as something like qutebrowser.

Weird brah. Glad I haven't updated to 48 then. Just using older version with a shit load of prefs changed from ghacks recommendations and use security addons. If it's too much of a hassle try an older more secure install? Also make sure to choose 64bit version it's snappier I think.

don't bother, I've spent several weeks on trying to get firefox to run faster, receiving the assistance of multiple people in various debug channels, etc.

I've done memory profiling, cpu profiling, played around with various features and compile flags, tried starting over from scratch with fresh profiles (which ironically made things even slower because it was missing all of my about:config performance tuning), tried dis-/enabling various caches and tuning them, etc.

I've already uninstalled firefox (about 2 weeks ago), and I don't plan on installing it again. So thanks for offering your assistance, but I've sunk enough time into the “make firefox great again” ship already. :/

>It's a shame Brave is going with it's shady, "pay for ads" thing, and it's using Chromium as a base, because otherwise that sounds like it would be neat.

This, I was gonna try it, but it just looks like yet another chrome reskin with some idiotic ideas. Besides, you can't really have a privacy-focused browser without being able to manage script execution and ads yourself. There's a reason why TOR browser comes with noscript and https everywhere by default. Brave has nothing besides the placebo "do not track" feature that doesn't work because by the time you're done browsing the net you already have 400 tracking cookies on your computer anyway.

May as well use Opera or Vivaldi if you don't want to use neither Chrome or Firefox... Brave literally has no reason to exist as it offers nothing new

Firefox is king of browsers because of about:config and plugins. No other browser can rival it in that respect. You can argue this all you want, but you know it's true.

I tried out firefox sync a few years ago, only to find that it's primary functionality was duplicating bookmarks.

I decided to try it again today. I first tried logging in with my 3 usual passwords, but none of them worked. Fine, I must have deleted my firefox account. I create a new one, verify my account, and try to sign in.

"Attempt limit exceeded".

That's right - they're counting the login attempts from BEFORE I EVEN HAD AN ACCOUNT. No idea how long before I'm allowed to log in, googling suggests perhaps days, and that it's IP based.

>use 40 dev build
>enable e10s
>it crashes the browser
I wouldn't mind using it either, but I refuse to eat the shit mozilla want to stick into my mouth that was added in versions past 40 dev.

That looks fucking rad.

Light is another, even more slimmed down than Palemoon, fork of Firefox.

Why does God punish us so?

Maxthon is pretty good and fast.

SeaMonkey is basically Firefox without Australis. Its ok if you want an ugly, but much faster and responsive browser. The cookie manager is nice too.

If you're considering Chromium-based browsers, check Ungoogled Chromium.

Literally none of them support latest firefox add-ons.

If Abrowser would support Greasemonkey I'd switch, but it doesn't. It does support Stylish though.

why the fuck is there no working scrobble extension for firefox? this is the only thing i miss from chrome

>Firefox is nothing more than a shadow of it's former self
Why is everyone on imageboards so dramatic? Firefox barely changed in the last 40 versions.
>>
>>56194607
It's the source we're talking about. It's basically become chrome, which is why we don't use it anymore.
>>
>>56194740
I don't know what you're talking about but I am pretty much 100% sure that you're exaggerating and being an annoying noisy faggot freetard.

>bundles botnet by default (pocket, DRM, “hello”, WebRTC, social media integration etc.)
>deprecating all semblance of compatibility with the addons that made it so popular in the first place (XUL/XPCOM removal -> WebExtensions copied from chrome)
>removal of choice and control from the user (settings get removed even from about:config, which was almost unheard of before)
>changelogs now written with “empowered grrrrrl” speech
>mozilla dumping all of its cash into women's outreach programs and SJW communities instead of improving the browser
yeah, no
>>
>>56194831
In other words: Mozilla is trying desperately hard to make Firefox into a shittier version of Chrome, including all of the bullshit and lack of control/addons that make Chrome what it is.

None of your points are complete and convincing.

First thing, stop calling everything you dislike "botnets". Actually elaborate on what those things you're listing are and what they do that you don't like. Otherwise, you're just pissing more piss into /g/'s ocean of piss.

Secondly, what good extensions are at stake here? I presume Mozilla is making that decision with some semblance of long-term planning but it's easier to be a drama queen about it.

What settings were removed and were they not replaced with any equivalent?

Finally, judging a software by its political implications is being a noisy, self-entitled little shithead /pol/tard. I don't want to hear your objections about it. They are not relevant to me or to anyone in the world.

>Women's outreach programs are bad
I'm sorry that some people are working towards helping victims of domestic violence while you're here on /g/ fighting the good fight complaining about a web browser having """"""SJW"""""" affiliations and not being customizable enough for your special snowflake needs.

I like Cyberfox.

None of what they do goes to help those and you know it.
>>
>>56195143
No, I don't know that negative presumptions about charity organizations are true just because they work on causes that remind me of the bitter aftertaste of tumblr SJWs. But that's just because I keep ties with reality and I don't base all my political opinions on threads on /pol/ and /b/.

Speaking of which, go back to your containment board.
>>
>>56195228
You completely defected. That's not what those outreach programs do, yet you claimed that. Why are you lying to strangers on the Internet?
>>
>>56175076
last time i used firefox, a complete fresh install just with adblock active, startup is so fucking slow even on a SSD, chromium on the other hand instantly
dont know what they fucked up here, or the addon but it literally loaded all adblock lists into memory before start and even on a SSD took a few seconds
