Mint was my first distro back in 2007

Currently happy with Ubuntu and Arch

Why do you think mint is better than, say, Debian, OP?

How insecure are you?

Linux mint is just like ubuntus bigger brother. Babbys who think they know something about linux use but they dont really 'use' it, could as well be using windows

Used mint for a while when I first got into Linux,
However, mint is too behind the times. Shit looks like and functions like it's from 2009, it needs a serious overhaul.

Arch is definitely a great distro, but it's not about being hardcore, it's about quality. Derivatives are generally terrible. This is true of Ubuntu, and more true of anything based off Ubuntu.

Check out NixOS, GuixSD, Arch, maybe even Debian.
>>
>>56173874
What exactly is high quality about Arch?
>>
>>56173663
Mint is running on 2 year old code compared to Ubuntu.
>>
>>56174037
Packages are up to date, pacman beats the pants off apt, the AUR has a lot of hard to find stuff like specific fonts or gtk themes.

After using Debian for a few years, Arch feels like GNU/Linux has been perfected.

Right now Mint runs on 0 seconds old code compared to Ubuntu. It won't be until April 2018 that it will run on 2 years old code, and then in like May 2018 it will run on 0 seconds old code again.

Every time I tried Mint it irrecoverably crashed.

I use UbuntuMate. Just enough tweaks to make it usable, and just enough bloat removed to make it tolerable. Plus it's pretty damned stable.
>>
Any distro that is exactly the same as arch but without a fat guy with a hat as a logo?
>>
Mint and any Ubuntu can fall to MITM attacks. If you have problems with hackers or crazy governments, keep looking for a safer OS.
>>
>>56171172
Mint doesn't play nice with my computer. I'm on an old Lenovo t430, which is coming up on 5 years of service. Mint is sluggish as all hell on it. Like, completely unusable.
>>
Because I prefer xubuntu, desu senpai. I used mint for a few years though from '13 through '15 or so. I liked it, though I didn't need 2/3rds of the packages that came installed.

>>
>>56177373
Not them, but that's not the point.

Everybody can install Debian and get the packages needed to get a perfect Mint look, but that's not the point.

The thing that attracts people to Mint is how easy it is - especially for the newbies. You don't have to play around with the terminal to get things working.
>>
>>56177367

>http only ppa's

You have more to worry about than http when you install something a ppa

>As anybody can create a PPA there's no guarantee for quality or security of a PPA - just like with any other unofficial software source you have to decide yourself if a PPA it's trustworthy or not

https://askubuntu.com/questions/4983/what-are-ppas-and-how-do-i-use-them

This still isn't the fault of Ubuntu or Mint.

>If they are so easy to find, can you link me to a bad ppa?

I'm not arguing PPAs are bad at all. I was replying to the spurious claim that Ubuntu and Mint are insecure because of PPAs - which is bullshit. PPA's aren't bad by themselves, you just need to be certain of the source.
>>
>>56177952
I cannot be certain of the source, when every request I make goes through a hidden ip located in the DosArrest server farm.
I'm not into illegal stuff, but my country and my ISP want to track every user browsing 4chan, I guess.
>>
>>56178023

Interesting, I see your concern.
>>
>>56175513
Ubuntu MATE is easily the best Ubuntu spin. MATE is a fantastic DE, and the maintainers do a pretty good job of not doing anything super retarded to bloat it up.

I use Arch now, but I might switch to Ubuntu MATE on my desktop just for a little more stability and "it just werks"

I need to get a VPS for a professional website soon. And I wish to have the same OS on my VPS as on my desktop and laptop. So I at least have an idea what I'm doing.

Should I just Debian or Ubuntu everything?
>>
>>56178421
My first distribution was Suse 6.2, then debian for a long time. Then I tried ubuntu, lxde, xubuntu, OpenSuse, slackware, so and so on. So let me say this: I guess I can survive with most of the distributions, but these days it just doesn't seem to be worth the time. With Mint everything works out of the box, and if you don't like fiddling around for your enjoyment it doesn't make sense to me to use something like Arch. Don't know, maybe if it's work related. But as a civilian I want just the productivity as quik as I can.
>>
>>56178535
Why use Linux if you don't actually want control? If you want something that just werks, get a Mac.
>>
>>56178588
It's not just about control. It's also about not buying windows, or overprized hardware for that matter. Also I have enough control to do what I want to do. If you want total control why aren't you learning machine code and create your own operating system? Maybe something with a bible theme?

>>
>>56179765
Honestly, yes. I use Ubuntu with slight customization bc I want the Linux command line and something pretty to look at. Why not go Arch, Debian, or Gentoo? Because I don't fucking feel like working to make something that 1) already exists, 2) is shittier than what's out there, and 3) is something I *need*. I do with Linux what I want. So what if I don't do something that's totally unnecessary ?
