And no you aren't crazy. The gauge used for the wires inside the cable make a huge difference, some manufacturers also add extra "power" pins and cables into their micro usb cables to charge faster. Motorola and LG for example charge quicker on Motorola and LG brand cables.

Yeah but my 20cm aukey cable charges my Nexus 5 at a higher mAh than my redmi 3 pro, but my $1.5 20cm braided chink cable charges the redmi faster than the nexus.

when you start switching them around you are going to be limited by whichever is slower.

The one and only reason is that they want people to buy accessories from them instead of their competition. There's no scientific validity to it.
