I want to install Linux on my Desktop, I've had both Ubuntu and Arch installed on my laptop. Is Ubuntu with Gnome or Unity the best distribution for a desktop? Why or why not? Is Linux on a Desktop even a good idea if you don't want/play AAA games; and even then you can just dualboot.

>>
>>56161340
Linux distros are optimized for every kind of device, and as you've no doubt heard before, you can run Linux on a toaster.

Different people use different distributions. If you're a beginner, start with Debian, or a derivative of Debian (Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint), when you get more comfortable, some would recommend Arch, and if you're a neckbeard, Install Gentoo.

If you're serious in learning Linux, look up "Learn Linux the hard way".
>>
>I want to install Linux on my Desktop

Good choice Windows is for straight up retards

>Is Ubuntu with Gnome or Unity the best distribution for a desktop?

Ubuntu with unity is the best consumer OS for users who want something that looks good and just werks and is modern.

I use Fedora with GNOME but I recommend Ubuntu to new users because Ubuntu has better defaults. Fedora needs the fonts tweaked and needs the rpmfusion repo for codecs.

> Is Linux on a Desktop even a good idea if you don't want/play AAA games; and even then you can just dualboot.

Games are for faggots

On a side note: Gentoo is the best OS for people who want full control over their system.
>>
I'd throw in Fedora as a pretty decent beginner distro. You do have to probably mess around config files and the terminal, but there's a lot of easy to find information online to get you started.

What's the software availability like on Fedora? My first distro was Arch and I loved the AUR, but I switched to Ubuntu since Arch can be a pain at times and Ubuntu basically has as much software you could want as Arch. Also Ubuntu package management is not as good as Arch

Arch is command line diy absolutely everything. you can build it from the ground up. Ubuntu has almost everything you need plus some. so if you want a lighter system in Ubuntu you need to uninstall packages and clean up the system. Arch is install as you need, Ubuntu "just werks" out of the box. There is no real "Need" to switch to Arch, It feels more fluid and lightweight to people and more cutting edge (Thus less stable).

Since both are Ubuntu / Debian based distros you won't have any problems installing packages through the terminal with apt (if you already know how to use it of course).

I'd personally recommend Elementary since it looks good as fuck out of the box, never tried Mate but I heard people saying that it was good.

Since as already said those distros are Debian / Ubuntu based most video editors will be available.

I'd recommend live booting them and see which one you like the most.

I love Linux on the desktop for package management alone. No more opening up that program that need once a week but when you need it, you need it now, just to be met with "hey, there's a new version, please go to our website to download and install it!".

Personally I use Fedora, if you're a GNOME 3 fan I feel like it's the obvious choice, at least if you're wanting an "out-of-the-box" style distro (meaning not Arch/Gentoo where you do it yourself). It comes with very little preinstalled software, it's freetard compatible, and it's dnf package manager makes using RPM a breeze.

It takes slightly more work out of the box than Ubuntu, at least if you want proprietary software because you have to enable third party repos for this, either RPM Fusion (my choice) or UnitedRPMs seem to be the most popular. If you're a gamer, you may find it slightly more difficult to obtain your proprietary graphics card drivers as well, and doing so will almost certainly break your Plymouth boot animation, but it's not hard to fix with a guide.

I think it's worth the extra steps to get a much cleaner, more stable, and ultimately more usable computer than even Ubuntu GNOME, but again, that's my opinion.

P.S. if you're having trouble installing software, see if it's available in a tool called "Fedy" they offer some one-click installers for common applications as well as tweaks for better font rendering, remaking grub config, remove muse acceleration, all of that.
>>
>>56166865
Atom is horrible in my opinion, tried it, but just meh. Using more RAM than the OS to edit 10kb text files is just no.

It's not a good idea to use linux on your personal computer, unless you are using your personal computer for your personal projects.

I don't remember which talk it was but in one of his talks even Linus said that traditional PC platform requires too many peripherals and hard to do. I think he also commented on how in the future when fewer things are being done on client side it will be better for Linux.

What I'm saying is, if you are using your computer for your documents, general web usage and media consumption, and also is apathetic towards privacy there is not a single reason not to use Windows. But this is not symmetrical, if you are concerned about your privacy there would still be reasons why you'd like to keep Windows around for compatibility.

Tbh I spend a lot less time troubleshooting problems on my ubuntu laptop than I do on my windows desktops and it stays fast forever compared to Windows needing a fresh install every little while.

This. If something goes wrong with linux it's usually something you did. If something goes wrong with windows it's usually something that windows decided to do without telling you or something just randomly stopped working.

>What I'm saying is, if you are using your computer for your documents, general web usage and media consumption, and also is apathetic towards privacy there is not a single reason not to use Windows.
>>
Why is nobody running xfce on fedora here?
>>
>>56171067
But those require good third party app support which Linux does not have. For example Amazon Prime's services require MS Silverlight I think. Of course you can work around it, but if watching videos is all you are going to do on the computer there's no reason not to use Windows unless you meet the criteria I mentioned.

Still even about that part what you said is a bit related. Because I'm not claiming windows is better or less troublesome, I'm just saying that it's the most mainstream and there's no compelling reason to change.
>>
>>56171114
>But those require good third party app support which Linux does not have.
It does have it, see Android, the desktop is a different story though
They require DRM features support which isn't something compatible with open source, let alone libre software
Though there's push everywhere for such things to land on *nix, and they already have, HTML5 already provides DRM features (and thus Netflix with Chrome) on GNU/Linux
>>
>>56171139
Again this is departing the subject at hand. If the only thing you are interested in is watching cat videos on facebook (which was the case I mentioned in my post) you would never use an OS that is not suitable for third party to provide you with actual up to date flash (I think the only one still getting updates is Chrome's flash on Linux).

This was a silly example, but I hope you can see where I'm getting at. Yes Linux does a lot of things better, but it's just not that significantly better for simple use and there is no reason to switch from a known environment to an unknown one for the simple user.

Also saying this requires DRM so Linux by definition can't run it is a weird argument.

But it really is.
Ubuntu is far easier to use than Windows. Windows is waaaaay buggier and you will run into way more problems.
>>

I just tried xpad but they don't stay on the desktop when I press super+d to minimize all other open programs. I'd have to manually minimize each program to be able to see it.

what's the best browser?
I've been using qutebrowser, it was great, but there was a bug that made me stop using it and apparently I was the only one (it fucked up all the text like in a vaporwave picture when scrolling).
Is it possible to de-botnet chromium? Or is firefox actually good?
I just need a browser that doesn't phone home, is riceable and has extensions.

If you're comfortable with arch, go with that. Otherwise, drivers in Ubuntu variants will be kept up to date enough to be perfectly fine.

I don't recommend debian. I know it's a popular recommendation around these parts, but I find the way their repository to work to be kind of bananas, and there simply isn't enough documentation for it considering it's in the same tier as arch after installation. (IE you have to set up EVERYTHING.) So I would just go with arch myself, I switched to it on my desktop and dig it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Gnome and I haven't used Unity since 14.04. I roll with MATE and xfce because I like the simplicity. KDE is good, but since it's qt based you don't get a lot of themes.

Fedora has more up to date packages than Ubuntu and Debian, but more stability (I.e. far less package breakage) than Arch.

>>
>>56178429
No its not.
>>
>>56178530
Yes it is, you are playing red light green light with updates depending on how late in the cycle it is.

In a lot of aspects its worse than Arch because they will push updates that they know cause breakage and the fix is to just wait for more updates.

if you don't have a general knowledge of linux, go with either manjaro, ubuntu or mint. i recommend ubuntu though, yeah. Ubuntu/Mint will be best for games. To be honest, though, you should dual-boot if you want to use linux but want a good selection of games. There are about half as many games for linux as there are windows.

kde is so systemheavy and prone to issues, though. I'd personally say someone who's new to ubuntu (or linux, even) should use unity until they have some experience, then move on to other de's. Unity is shit, but it's so stragihtforward, a monkey could navigate through it.
