No, they gave out pieces of paper you can exchange for money (a.k.a. checks). The ex-employees never received actual money.

A company going bankrupt doesn't mean they simply don't have any money anymore and they simply vanish. It actually is a process involving a bankruptcy court, where the financial situation of the company is analyzed, and to the best possible extent any money owed by the company is paid back (investors, stockholders, employees, etc., there's an order of priority, but I can't remember it).

If the company really went through this process, the employees would have gotten their money, or at least a letter from the court informing them of the situation.

So you're either talking bullshit or the company just moved to another office, changed its name and had you believe they're unrelated. In that case, get a lawyer and sue them. Companies are registered, so anyone could just follow the paper trail
and demonstrate the two companies are the same.

This is true in most (if not all) civilized countries. It's the case here in Switzerland, everyone learns about this in high school. The laws are almost identical all over Europe and the US. But maybe this happened in India.
