What I am missing here, mostly I just need to replace my motherboard/cpu and get a new gpu.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/FxBRTH

What's another good 1151 LGA motherboard by the way? should I go with the i7 6670k?

I am more than likely gonna wait till Zen, in hopes of price drops, since I am in no hurry.

But just wanted to go over what I am gonna buy right now, and save the list.

A friend of mine is trying to build a Gaming PC with a budget of $1200 US Meme Points.

this is a build I've come up with, anyone have any input on anything I should change?
>>
Reposting from the previous thread:

I currently have a system running a 2600k, with my old monitor I bought in 2006 -- 1440x900.

I'm going to upgrade my monitor to 1080p 144Hz, and I plan on getting a new video card shortly after, either a 470 or 480, depending on what's in stock, and what the price difference is at the time.

Am I going to start seeing a bottleneck in my 2600k for games, or am I still good-to-go?
>>
>>56144318
buy a new PC before you go to the 1080p 144hz meme.

Just wanted to get afew more opinions on this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/pc-specialist-vortex-minerva-gaming-pc-10139144-pdt.html
Im shit with trying to build pcs and dont trust myself not to fuck something up. Will that be able to run guild wars 2 at mid-max settings? Il be replacing it in about a year probably but i just want something to play guild wars and rocket league on and maybe some other not intensive games.
>>
>>56144593
I mostly want it for future proof, how good is the overclock ability of the processor compare to the 6600k?
I have a nearby microcenter, so I can easily get a cheap CPU+MOBO.
>>
>>56144600
overkill. hyperthreading is a meme unless you use applications that actually require those extra 4 threads. keep in mind they aren't 4 cores, they're much weaker than the physical 4 cores already on the cpu.
>>56144618
they will overclock the same honestly, an i7 is just an i5 with hyperthreading.
>>
>>56144338
Why? On what games is the 2600k a bottleneck?
>>
>>56144803
>they will overclock the same honestly, an i7 is just an i5 with hyperthreading.
Somehow I don't believe, you but I am already leaning to the i5 so thanks.
>>
Is there anything I need to know about cable sleeves for a PSU's modular cables? I bought a white PSU and want to sleeve the black cables but I don't really understand what I'm doing. Do I remove the black sleeve that came with the cables, or dodo the replacement sleeves just go over the existing ones?
>>
>>56144906
they're the same architecture, they will OC exactly the same. the only difference between them is the stock clock frequency.
>>
>>56144617
Well the cpu is absolute dogshit garbage, and the price is too high, but yeah it will play guild wars. You can get a lot better, for less money, but go ahead and buy the overpriced trash can.

>>
>>56145539
Thanks man ily too. Has anyone on /g/ ever done serious custom loop stuff? Once it's built I'll be happy to post pics. It's not like I won't save money if I can either. Any of the parts can go on sale.
>>
>>56144318

No. I have a 2600k and a 1070. The thing is fantastic still. I run at 1440p@144hz. The resolution is the bottleneck currently. At 1080p you'll be fine.
>>
>>56144617

Why would you deliberately spend more money than you need on a AWFUL set of specs?

Just get a Mac, seriously. You have no idea what you're doing. I can't believe people honestly think that they can fuck up building a PC, it's elementary level stuff.

Is Intel really creating many many sockets just to earn more money? After integrating the FSB in the CPU, the number of incompatible and near-exact sockets don't stop to rise. I can't even be sure that one i3 is compatible with another i3, as there are revisions of the socket, and they change 1 or 5 pins... The CPUs have the same name "i3", but each one is from different generations, and so the number of CPUs for the socket is limited, as it's already obsolete. Also, the CPUs are having some kind of DRM chip inside, network control chip, and Intel helped create the UEFI monster....

This makes me sad. I tried to keep my old PCs, but couldn't, as they were old and stopped working. I don't want to use UEFI, I don't want to have CPUs with sockets already obsolete. Is AMD doing the same thing? How will I be able to compute in the future, chinese "brands"??

No keyboard or mouse? If you're going to use the deep cool AIO they just released the EX versions that perform better. Also the red and black color scheme is neat, but some of your fan choices seem weird. Other than that check reviews on that motherboard. The monitor is decent. Wait until November and more sales come up on ssd and such too.
>>
>>56146901

That PSU is going to explode.
The SSD is very low quality and will likely experience rapid failure
You could have gotten an AIO loop for the same price as that Noctua
Your processor has a locked multiplier and can't be overclocked
That mouse is half the price on Amazon, and sucks anyway

You're not totally wrong. But everyone has different needs and budgets. AMD works for some super penny pinchers but if you find a desk on an nvidia card and you've read some reviews go for it.
>>
>>56144889
Almost nothing, that could can still handle almost any game around now.
It also has basically nothing to do with your graphics, I don't know what GPU you have but that's what you need to be looking at

>>
>>56146506
pls respond
>>
>>56147478
Because if you did the same 5 minutes of research that I did youd see that it's at 3.2 ghz and can be easily overclocked to 4+ on a half decent cooler. Games care more about processing speed than cores. Youd also see that it gives some i5 and i7s a run for their money in several benchmarks.
>>
>>56147511
Honestly, the g3258 meme died over a year ago for a reason. It's 2016, no-one should get a dualcore for gaming unless they're on poverty-tier budget. Pretty much all new games scale at least to 4 threads, at which point a Haswell i3 will match if not beat the g3258, and some games won't run at all without at least 4 threads available.

Drop the cooler, get a PSU appropriate for the actual wattage of the build (instead of getting a 750w PSU for 300W build) and switch to a B150 motherboard, and you'll be able to fit an i3 to the same budget.
>>
>>56147690
Sorry I totally spaced, Im still looking for a 1440p/Gsync monitor at a decent price. I'm mainly buying a 1080 for future proofing, figure it should last me a long while. If anyone has any monitor recommendations though Id happily take them.

>>56147733
Look dude, clearly I'm retarded so listen to what other people said. I was looking at things based off how I would buy it. Which is planning to upgrade in the future. You get the b150 motherboard, smaller psu without the gold efficiency and whatever else works for you

PH-PWHUB-2.jpg

How does something like this work? They claim that it can control up to 11 3 pin fans through pwm using a single 4 pin header on the mobo. I thought the fourth pin is for pwm and 3 pin fans can only be controlled through voltage regulation.
>>
>>56147867
It looks ok. For what I know, Samsung 850 Evo starting from 250 GB is worthy over other brands. Your model must be a Samsung 750 Evo though, for 120 GB you could choose either a Crucial BX200 or a Sandisk Plus.
>>
>>56147917
It probably takes the PWM signal from the mobo and uses it to adjust voltage for the other fans.

Still, if you want to control fan RPM using proper 4 pin PWM fans is a much better idea. They generally provide a wider adjustable range (I have 3000RPM fans that can run at 300) and they will also allow closer to linear adjustment. With voltage control you also risk fans not starting at all if the voltage is too low and the voltage a fan can start it is generally higher than the minimum voltage it will spin at once started.
>>
>>56147885
Good call on the CPU, gonna look into mobos a bit more since I guess ASRock makes trash. Explains why it seemed to good to be true.
>>
>>56147899
I'm not too familiar with AMD processors but that looks alright. 8 cores and 4.7 GHz

a 960 though?
>>
>>56148064
asrock make good mobos. don't fall for the asus meme
>>
What kind of games do I want installed in a SSD? New ones and graphic intensive? I assume old 2D ones would be okay in a regular HDD.

Also, if I want 2 external HDD's as backups, should I buy 2 of the same or is it better if they are different models?
>>
>>56148132
ASUS still makes better high-end mobos, but otherwise ASRock is a good choice.

built this shit, its gonna cost me a fortune in the EU, but anyway im puzzled on two things:
1. Is the PSU too shit for this, and
2. Is Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO suitable? Not sure how much im gonna push the cpu.
>>
>>56148304
6700k if you want an i7, but don't really deal with well-threaded workloads that scale for 8+ cores. 5820k if you want the best performance in things like encoding, rendering, etc. 6800k if you absolutely must have the newest and the best but are still too cheap to get a real octocore.
>>
>>56148045

What do you recommend? I have more pwm fans than my mobo has headers for. All I want to do is find something other than a fan controller that can independently control up to at least 6 pwm fans.

If you want *independent* control and your mobo doesn't supply 6 channels, you'll need a fan controller, no way around that.

If you simply want to control 6 PWM fans, but you're fine with some of them not being controlled independently, you can use PWM splitter cables like pic related. I use these on my own system to control 6 fans across 3 channels:
>2 3000RPM fans as front intake on 1 splitter
>3 2400RPM fans as top/radiator exhaust on another splitter
>1 3000RPM fan as rear exhaust

Why do you need 6 independent channels? What's your setup like?
>>
>>56144585
Why not get a smaller Corsair cooler and a slightly cheaper Asus mobo (like a z170-a) and bump your gpu to a 1080?
>>
>>56148443
I don't know how a 5820K OCs compared to a 6800K, but there shouldn't be any reason (other than price if applicable) to go for Haswell-E opposed to Broadwell-E. 6800K is the direct replacement for 5820K.
>>
>>56144889
only thing i could think of is heavy cpu intensive games like arma.
>>
>>56148679
The problem with Broadwell-E is that it's more expensive than Haswell-E and the performance difference is marginal at best. So unless the prices go down, there really isn't any reason not to get Haswell-E while it's still available.
>>
>>56145512
>http://pcpartpicker.com/list/bmqnLD

honestly, instead of the titan x just get two 1080s. it'll look better aesthetically and will probably get better performance no matter what you're doing.

also, get headphones, an amp, and a desk mic (just get a yeti since you're already basically brandwhoring) and some real speakers.

I suggest you this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/wWqnLD

1) i5 6600K needs an aftermarket CPU cooler, whereas i5 6500 doesn't
2) since you're going to buy 2133 MHz RAM, why not going with a lower CL? Kingston Savage is better
3) Seasonic PSU costs more but at least it's Bronze certification

>>
>>56149005
Yes, that's a big splitter. PWM headers aren't "smart" and they don't use some sort of fancy data protocol to tell the fan what speed to run at. There's no way to turn 1 PWM header into multiple different ones. In theory you can use a splitter to control multiple fans from 1 header, but not each fan independently.

Still, why do you need 6 independent fans? Generally speaking you've got intake, exhaust and probably your CPU cooler.

What type of games you'll be playing?

And the CPU was a tad bit on the expensive side for light gaming, as we can downgrade to a 6300 and upgrade the motherboard for the same price, and have a really nice overclockable motherboard, for when you want that extra kick in future.

Also, the GPU sucks ass for gaming and you might as well have just gotten an intel CPU for the iGPU.

First time posting here, hope some of you guys can offer some advice.

I've never built a computer before, but my brother and I salvaged an old office server room. I think that i can reuse some parts to build a cheap sub 200$ gaming computer, but I'm not entirely sure what my chances are of succeeding.

>Specs:
>Motherboard =
https://www.asus.com/Commercial-Servers-Workstations/Z8NRD12/
>RAM =
http://www.corsair.com/en/tr3x3g1333c9 (except that i have 6 sticks of 2 gig each)
>Processor =
Unidentified, all I know is that based on the motherboard they're some type of Intel Xeon 5500, I have two with the heat sinks.
>Power supply
Already included, a big as fuck 550 watt battery
>ROM / harddrive:
Three 1 terrabyte hard drives, probably beaten up, but hopefully I can get some use out of them.
>Disk driver
included in case.

That's everything. The big question atm is whether or not a graphics card can even fit. If anyone could take a look at the Motherboard pictures and give me a guess as to whether any decent graphics card would fit I would really appreciate it.

Bear with me, I'm entirely new to this thing.

I assume most graphics cards fit the thread count I can see on the motherboard, its just a matter of actually accomodating for its size.

If i move all my RAM to the one side of the computer I guess it could still fit.
>>
>>56152734
Actually, I think its only the longest pci slot that would work.

If so I think I couldn't fit it in with both heat sinks, would it be a bad idea to ditch the one covering one of the processors?

Why. the hell. would you get an H170 mobo with a K CPU?

Yes you made a bad decision.
>>
>>56153424
Anyone?
>>
>>56153677
Care to explain more? Just saying it bad isn't going to change anything
>>
>>56153697
You bought a specifically overclockable CPU with a motherboard that can't do it
>>
>>56153525
Cool

>>56153600
Carbide 330R? $100-120, I have a hardon for Corsair's understated cases.

>>56153652
Do a clean install and transfer manually. I assume you know that your Documents/Music/Pictures etc in your libraries are still on the C drive and you can just copy paste those folders.

>>56153697
K means overclocking, and by the looks of it, that mobo won't let you overclock. So you wasted your money on the CPU.

>>56153424
>>56153683
You won't get very far on that budget, I'm afraid. My honest recommendation would be to save up at least twice that if you want to really do any form of rendering seriously, and spend the time you have to wait saving that up researching good parts.
>>
>>56153744
Thanks. What are the alternatives then?
>>
>>56153475
>>56153516
Alright thanks guys.

I also see I have to work on some compability issues so I'll go do that.

Was this another retard move?
>>
>>56153753
I'm on a limited time scale for earning the current amount that I'm earning now and $600 is the best I can do. I have a build in mind already but I'm not sure how it will be.
>>
>>56153791
Well since you wouldn't be overclocking then that's fine
>>
>>56153802
Post the build, I'm bored as fuck.

Word of warning though, if you do go through with it. You may end up with buyers remorse since odds are it won't be able to run the latest shit or render really intensive shit, and then you'll be stuck with a machine that doesn't fit your needs (idk how specific they are, you may be fine) and out $600.
>>
>>56153806
So I'm a retard for getting a motherboard I can't overclock with. I cancel it and ask suggestions for a motherboard I should get and then I get told the fan is fine because I'm not overclocking??

>>
>>56153836
Get a z160 board not h160, and maybe a watercooler but the 6600k is powerful stock you don't have to overclock it immediately
>>
>>56153836
You never mentioned wanting to OC, to be fair. Shoulda made your intentions clearer.

>>56153841
He never said where he got it though. Why's it cheaper? Sale?
>>
>>56153791
>>56153836

No that fan would be ok.

You basically have two options. If you want to overclock, keep the fan and CPU you chose and upgrade to an overclocking motherboard. Z170 instead of H170 is the thing you want to look for iirc.

OR if you don't want to bother with overclocking, drop the fan and get an i5-6600 instead of a 6600K. The 6600 should come with a stock fan but double check to make sure before you buy it.

I think you can use a 6600K with an H170, but you won't be able to overclock it so it's kind of a waste of money. Unless you can find the 6600K for cheaper (plus the fan) than the 6600 somewhere.

>>56153858
I've got my 6600K up to 4.5mhz on air, doesn't get too hot. It's not a record-breaking overclock by any means but it does the job.

what about this board? Does it seem fine?

From what I've seen a 6600 is more than a 6600k. My cpu has been bottlenecking me for years so it will be nice to upgrade. I'll probably try to upgrade my gpu in the next year or so. It will be the bottleneck now I imagine

How quiet is air cooling? Online they keep saying liquid is quieter so I looked at that but if you're running that on air I might start looking at cheaper cooljng
>>
>>56153983
I can guarantee that there's nothing you're doing that would warrant that SSD. A 512gb 2.5" drive is cheap as hell and just as fast 90% of the time, most of that advantage is just in bandwidth not necessarily performance
>>
>>56153934
That board's probably fine although Gigabyte does Z versions of their H boards if you wanted the same board but overclocking. Look up the GA-Z170M-D3H instead of the GA-H170M-D3H

>>56153996
Mine's pretty quiet although I have a Scythe Kotetsu which is different than the 212 EVO you're looking at. I can't hear it over my case fans at idle and it's very quiet under load, the fan rarely needs to spin up to full speed though because my case has pretty good air flow.

Watercooling is probably the quietest if that's your thing.

>>56153934
If I were you I'd keep the K then, make a project out of OCing it.

>>56153952

I wish, dude. a RAM drive would moisten me right up.

Seriously though, that's not bad for $600, but the i3 probably lacks a lot of the power you're looking for. Any chance you can fit an i5 in the budget?

>>56153983
I would say definitively no. Go for a 250GB and a 2+TB HDD for other shit.

>>56153996
Can be pretty quiet, but yeah, a water pump's gonna most likely make less noise than fans.
>>
>>56153983
Again, an overclocking CPU with a non-overclocking mobo, although if the 6600K is really cheaper than the 6600 right now then that's fine.
>>
>>56154034
>>56154044
desu I only bought my pc like 6 years ago and only ever upgraded the gpu and then psu recently when it went out. So I have no idea about which brand is better than another anymore.

I'm all ears for any motherboard recommendations. I'd like to go with the cheapest quality board that won't just die. Not interested in sli/crossfire stuff because next time I can afford a new part it will most likely be a single GPU

Is there any point to be getting a motherboard for that much when you can get an alternative you can overclock on? The only reason why I had chosen the shitty one I can't overclock because it was $80 and I had no idea
>>
>>56154092
A mini-ITX, Z160 chipset motherboard with your USB plugs of choice, you can try to save money, but those requirements aren't cheap
>>
>>56153145
AMD processor I understand, but there is nothing wrong with AMD gpus if you're on a tight budget. kys novideo shill.
>>
>>56154095
Well for that motherboard the Z170N version is more expensive. So if you're on a tight budget that's a consideration.

Other than that, no. I can't speak for you but personally if I was ready to drop $147 dollars on a motherboard I'd be willing to drop $180 instead for the overclocking version, ESPECIALLY if I'm already getting an unlocked processor. Whether or not you want to overclock is entirely your decision though, and if not then the H170 is fine.
>>
I think I decided on this board for the 6600k

Here's an idea, since money's tight. SSDs are still a money pit, and personally, I wouldn't use on as my primary storage.

The 7200rpm HDDs are pretty damn fast, so I might recommend you swap the SSD for something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=psdc_1254762011_t1_B000EY5F5C

Which gives you 4x the storage for 40 bucks less, and then with that savings you can put it into a little bit better i3 like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117621

Just a thought to get more power for your money.
>>
>>56154171
But there are boards for $147 already so it doesn't make much sense to me. Like you're paying for a pricier motherboard you can't overclock, but can get one for the same exact price. So what is the point?

What makes a motherboard worth more than another besides the overclocking aspect of it?

>>
>>56154192
>What makes a motherboard worth more than another besides the overclocking aspect of it?

tons of things, honestly. Integrated wifi, pci-e slots, SLI/xfire compatibility, RAM compatibility, USB ports (of different types and quantity), not to mention different brands have different policies w/r/t customer support and warranty and drivers and so on.

Plus there's always straight up build quality to take into account. Buddy of mine bought some cheap gigabyte SLI board that's advertised as full ATX but when he went to screw it into his case he found it was a little smaller and didn't use all the stand offs. Fit perfectly fine but when I was helping plug in all the stuff for his power supply it bent and flexed really worryingly.
>>
>>56154244
Ah right, you have more space incoming. Well if you're happy with it, I see no reason not to make it happen.

Everything looks fine for the most part. Although if I was you I might switch that WD Blue Hard Drive for a black one or just get a cheap SSD to put the OS on.

Having put that heat sink on in the past I am refusing to do so ever again. Not because it is bad or doesn't work but it is a cunt to install. Might be worth the $40 or so extra bucks one of Corsairs easy to install water cooler.

Moar RAM? 8 is fine but you might want to upgrade to 16 gigs to be safe.

What's the point of having 2400-3000+mhz RAM when most motherboards don't use it unless you overclock?

Hey guys. Currently shopping for my new computer case, and I'm having trouble deciding.
On one hand the Design Define S takes out any 4.25 drives and leaves room for maximum airflow, but I'm worried about HDD temps on the back (I have 2 HDDs and 1 SSD) not receiving airflow. Then there's the Corsair 400C which has HDDs at the bottom, under the PSU shroud. The Eclipse p400s suffers the same issue, and I'm afraid of what would happen if I were to not drop fans at the bottom to cool my HDDs. Suggestions?

Asus GTX 1060 Strix 6 GB (non OC, three fans) : 349€
Asus GTX 1060 Strix 6 GB (OC, three fans) : 379€

EVGA is going to arrive at the shop, whereas both of the tow Asus cards are in stock already. Which would you recommend me? Which is the best in terms of noise reduction and cooling? Size isn't a problem, my case contain a GPU as big as 355mm.

It tells you all the RAM speeds it supports. OC means overclocked.
>>
>>56157358

Yes but you can buy RAM that is 3200 stock can't you?
>>
>>56157390
Technically yes. You just shouldn't buy a RAM that goes over 3466 MHz when overclocked.
>>
>>56157390
If you buy RAM that's rated at 3200 (for example) it will only run at 2133 when you first install it. You have to go into your BIOS and manually turn on XMP, which will overclock it to 3200 for you. Some motherboard/RAM may do the XMP thing automatically, I don't know. But anyway that's why everything over 2133 is listed as (OC) there, it's technically an overclock.
