I figured hardware would be better because I don't know if I could get permissions to install stuff, and because it minimizes the amount of interaction I need to have with his computer. But if you think software is better I'm open to suggestions.

I won't get caught. All I need to do is connect it, and then disconnect it in a few weeks. If he notices it, there's nothing to tie the device to me. If I find evidence, I can send it to management anonymously, like email them from a throwaway address. They don't even have to know it's coming from inside the company.
