Why is caps lock a thing? Why is there no caps lock lock key?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Holding down shift is bothersome. Let's say if you needed to type a header for a memo or a poster or really anything, a caps lock would be useful.

Also, CAPS LOCK FUCK YEAH.
>>
>>56137570
Use it as a control key.
>>
>>56137570
Typing with one hand
>>
i disabled it in the registry, but sometimes in games, when i press many buttons together, it turns on somehow
and since its still disabled in the registry i cant turn it off again
Last time i had to remap it in AHK by copypasting letter by letter

Caps lock, letter, caps lock, next letter...
Is this not how you type?
>>

Maybe to help people that are having a hard time using shift ? Handicape people, I dunno.
>>
>>56137570
Use it as a modifier key (I use it for controlling my window manager)
>>
>>56139732
How severely and acutely crippled do you have to be to struggle with shift but not caps lock and the rest of the board? Also, they have their own special keyboards built into their chairs and shit anyway

THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER.
>>
>>56139904
I don't think I've used the esc key at all in the past 7 years...
>>
>>56138000
I rebound caps lock to Left Shift + Right shift. It doesn't need to take up an entire key.

Also: nice digits!

There's a warning light for that

>he doesn't use it as a modifier key or some other feature

I have most of my custom code hidden behind a capslock+other-key-here
1 to - are window management keys.
1-7 anchor windows to a right sidebar
8-9 are half-height top or bottom, respectively
0 maximies, - minimizes and returns to normal window flow.
Capslock + lshift, rshift, lctrl, rctrl anchor windows horizontally top, bottom, or vertically left and right. (I remember the difference easily because shift keys are wide)
Capslock + Win is used for special window anchors. (I do this on a case by case basis.)

Holding down capslock slows my mouse to speed1. Useful for drawing and other precise work.

I also wrote various window-specific hotkeys on the letter keys.
Mainly one of them was a Minecraft bot and quick-steal chests before mod-clients were a thing.

All done in shitty Autohotkey.

It's an older meme, sir, but it checks out.
>>
>>56142098
I've built this thing in XKB. Caps Lock + QWEASDZXC are bound to useful things.

>Why is caps lock a thing

I use it almost every day at work as an engineer. I make a lot of technical drawings and most of the labels are in all caps because it makes it more clear for the shop guys.

EVEN WITH CRUISE CONTROL YOU STILL HAVE TO STEER.
>>
ONLY PLEBS USE CAPS FOR ALL CAPS
HOLDING DOWN SHIFT REQUIRES MORE EFFORT WHICH EMPHASIZES MY ANGER
>>

> tiny spacebar
> huge enter key

Nah, I'll stick to my "office"-tier keyboard I bought in 2005.
>>
>>56142565
AND YOU MUST CHANGE THE SHIFT KEY EVERY FEW LETTERS BECAUSE THAT'S EVEN HARDER AND THAT IS HOW YOU USE SHIFT
>>
I'm so used to it that I'll use it even if I'm just a letter.
no bully pls

Stop using $10 Dell keyboards
>>

>tiny spacebar
>a bad thing
It's not like your thumb is 5cm thick, is it?

I don't get how keyboard layouts manage to be so shit.
>staggered layout
>huge spacebar instead of comfy modifier keys or layer control keys
Those two wouldn't even cost any more in production, except having 2 or 3 keys more. Well, okay, implementing layers would cost something so they could pass on those in cheap keyboards.
>>
Why isn't the Caps Lock key not an actual lock like it used to be?
>>
>>56142653
The whole thing is over 2000 lines long, so no, but here's the important part.
    replace key <CAPS> {
[ Hyper_L, Hyper_L ]
};
modifier_map Lock { <I219> };
modifier_map Mod3 { <CAPS> };
key <RWIN> { [ Super_R ] };
key <I149> { [ XF86iTouch ] };
key <I154> { [ XF86Support ] };
key <I161> { [ XF86Search ] };
key <I168> { [ XF86Mail ] };
key <I178> { [ XF86Community ] };
key <I183> { [ XF86Video ] };
key <I184> { [ XF86Q ] };
key <I217> { [ XF86Shop ] };

Assuming you put that in ~/.xkb, you can then run this mess.
setkeycodes e023 141 e01f 146 e01a 153 e01e 160 e013 170 e014 175 e015 176 e01b 209
setxkbmap -option keypad:pointerkeys
xkbcomp "$HOME/.xkb" "$DISPLAY"

Refer to An Unreliable Guide to XKB Configuration by Doug Palmer for more.
>>
# Make caps lock send hyper, make both shit press send caps lock
setxkbmap -option caps:hyper -option shift:both_capslock
# Make a single hyper press send escape
xcape -e "Hyper_L=Escape"

Caps lock is only a thing if you allow it to be a thing
