Went through same problem and considered a Windows Phone (640 or 650). If it needs to be an Android go for some chink shit (Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei...)

I own one, the Marshmallow update is really good, Huawei have outdone themselves.

have the G3, any issues I had were resolved by kernel auditor + cyanogenmod.

be warned that the water proof seal is poor, I have seen it fail on before.

For that price, I really doubt you'll get something with a better battery life, but if he doesn't watch videos for hours and doesn't play heavy games, it will be fine for over 12 hours

The Moto E is just as good as the G except for the 1GB ram. I upgraded to the G just for the extra GB of ram. I actually liked the form factor of the E more than the G, and it is a good bit cheaper.
