Sounds like /g/ alright

Well, you are not using the native tool, you're using an browser script to decode the images.

How can I view them natively to test performance?
Something like this already exists
>.gifv

avc, not even hevc.
what is wrong witchu, fucking retard?: this is exclusive shit from imgur meme
Webms, you faggots!

WebM for video with AV1 video and Opus audio and then WebP with AV1 image compression.
That would be ideal but it's a long shot from happening. Not everyone is going to reencode every single image and video to those things even though it would save us so much bandwidth and space.
>>56122016
gifv is just a mp4 or webm video with the .gifv extension

Does bpg stand for "butts of pretty girls"?
>>56122016
gifv has made it twice as hard for me to download actual videos of imgur (while not solving any of my problems) and this makes me sad.
BPG, being a simple implementation of I-frames from HEVC, is covered by the patents owned by both the HEVC Advance and MPEG-LA pools, except as it is not a compliant implementation of HEVC itself, no licence is available.
So I'm afraid it is not Free Software, and will not be for something like 15 years, at which point it will be far behind state in the art if NetVC is anything to go by.
FLIC actually has a future. Maybe try that if you're determined to not use PNG or JPEG.
Or even WebP. That does actually work on some things.
