This machine is just a Unix play pin. I have an old IBM T41 coming and want an Ubuntu that won't rape the 512MB

Use htop or some kind of process manager to figure out what's eating your RAM.
Consider Arch and/or plain OpenBox.

Lubuntu will work fine, memory usage is always higher on machines with more RAM
Though you probably won't be able to multitask at all, installing ubuntu-minimal and a window manager instead of a full blown DE is the best you can do to save memory
Otherwise using Bunsenlabs isn't a bad idea, Openbox just werks and if things haven't changed much since the #! days then it will be pretty easy to use, and it won't idle using more than 100~ MB
