Would it be possible to open up my old laptop battery and replace the old 18650s with new NCR18650Bs? I really like my old U56E and I bet this upgrade along with my new SSD would boost the battery life from 6 hours max to 7+ on average.

Normal laptop batteries are 2200mAh each usually, this is like a 50% upgrade plus your batteries have probably aged to -1800mAh each or less so it'll be more than 10 hours

That's reassuring.
One of my biggest fears is fucking up the pack. Is there a special technique to it?

Check forums/Google for similar topic, I'm sure there's dedicated communities to this.

Yes. Should be quite easily possible... relatively speaking.
There is always glue and shit in the way, but if you can do some electronics this is nothing much.
Ask /diy/ for guidance

For someone who knows exactly what they're doing with the specific chipset in question, yes.
....good luck. If you make one mistake, the whole thing bricks. Safety feature.

Sounds to me like you're trying to talk through your asscrack. As long as the batteries are similar, there will be no difference the machine could measure.
You'll need some pure nickel strips and a spot welder. Solder heats up the batteries and degrades them.

What if I'm quick? I have a 60w iron.

House fires and explosions. You could always try conductive epoxy that is filled with silver.

I have a better questions:
I want to expand my battery capacity. Can I use the ODD bay as space for this? I'm confused because the only mods I see add an equal number of identical cells to keep the voltage etc the same. Obviously the ODD bay does not have space for that.

Then add them in serial faggot.
