IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have a question fellas, I have a hp laptop with the following specs, i7, 16gb ram, 750gb 7200rpm hdd, nvidia 635 2gb gpu.....sorry I'm on my phone, no speccy.....my question is would it be worth it to add a 256gb ssd and use it as the OS drive and to run all my programs? Bc right now it's getting a little slow, I've had it four years, and I just now realized it has a 2nd hdd bay, I really only use it as a media pc for the tv in my bedroom

Can I somewhere look up specifications for a screen by its FRU?

My x250 just arrived and I specifically asked the seller if it comes with an IPS screen, he confirmed it does, but in reality it doesn't seem like IPS.

I just want to make sure it really isn't IPS before I contact him, it might just be a really shitty one. Googling the FRU didn't help much as there are different websites stating different things.

Some chinks from 51nb did it, like every other cool Thinkpad mod. He cut the bezel to better fit the screen and pretty sure the display is actually connected through the dock display port output, so might not have brightness control.

Friendly reminder to clean out your air intakes!

>x200 regularly does 55C while idling
>air intake underneath the fan was completely caked in dust
>clean it out with toothbrush
>idle temps is now 42C
>>
>>56094208
Im assuming youre running Windows. Almost goes without saying, but clean the fan with canned air. Run RMClock and undervolt it. (Google "undervolting guide"). Theres some fan control software that works on those old Dells I can't remember the name of. Also, get the ATI CCC software and put the GPU into low power mode, it halves the clock frequency. You'll have it running 20°+ C cooler and the battery will last about 30% longer too.

t. prior D410 and D810 owner
>>
>>56094337

Everything is cleaned, fan is repalced with new unit. I will check out those underclock guides, don't really need the x300 for some desktop programs. And yes, I run windows xp, becasue the software im using works only on it (and 98, lel).

Are there any risks when buying "seller refurbished" thinkpads from ebay?
I am from Europe and I can't get better deals, sadly.
>>
>>56094546
Seller refurbished generally means they cleaned it up for you and installed windows and then marked it up.
They should be ready to use out of the box.

If you don't feel like browsing or waiting for a good auction, it's acceptable, they'll come with a battery and AC adapter guaranteed.

That's actually good since the programs I suggested are made to work on an OS of the same era and it's way easier to do in Windows than it is in Linux with PHC.

What kind of E540 do you have? It scales pretty heavily, from a shitty AMD with a 1366* screen to an i7 with a FHD touchscreen.

I have both an i7 E540 and an i5 x220. If you want portability, then the x220 is a clear winner, of course. In terms of performance, it really depends on the specs of each machine.

x220 is going to work perfectly for you. If you want crazy battery life and don't mind a little extra heft, go with the nine cell main battery and slice auxiliary battery, I get ~20 hours battery life under minimal use, 8 hours intensive, and it lasts days if I keep it in suspend when I'm not using it.

Don't even look at the x240 or upwards, they're all unsalvageable but the x240 in particular is an extreme offence. Especially if you want to use this for programming, the keyboard is going to make a huge difference. The x230 keyboard is bad, but it can be replaced with the keyboard used in the x220 and t420, and having an Ivy Bridge CPU makes it a higher spec but more expensive alternative to the x220.

Average price for either x220 or x230 used ranges from 200-300 USD, depending on model. If you run with the x220, get a model with an i7 in it, the i5 models don't have a USB3 port.
>>
>>56097037
Okay, we're on the same boat, then. Out of interest, what do you dislike about it?

I can see why fans of classic thinkpads would dislike it - especially now that I have an x220. But it had a phenomenal price/perf ratio when I bought it. The shitty TN panel is the only thing I really dislike about it. But that might hit you on the x220 as well.

I seriously don't get all the hate towards the E540, but I was only looking for a decent consumer-grade notebook that will handle home-office dev tasks when I bought it, so maybe I simply was not expecting as much
>>
>>56097116
One of the reasons why used thinkpads are recommended so much is that the newer ones don't really give that big of a performance boost. Sandy Bridge is good enough, and Ivy Bridge if you care about the GPU.
>>
>>56097180
its not a total garbage laptop, i believe its much better than majority in this price segment, but its simply not what i want. my expectations of what im going to do with laptop and what i actually do are vastly different. mostly its the battery life. i thought it would be my only computer so it had to be good specs and bigger. but its not anymore, i need a portable laptop with good battery life and its not something e540 can do.

You forgot about THIS LITTLE SHIT

The trackpad on the x220 is hinged at the top, near the buttons used for the nipple. Meaning if you try to click with it anywhere above the equator it feels like the switch it just broken.

However, despite that I'd consider it the last good small form factor thinkpad. The x230 has the same issue, and later x series thinkpads get even worse. And going backwards in time the processing power starts to drop off significantly in any models that have a trackpad at all. If you need something smaller than the t420, would still recommend the x220.
>>

> i need a portable laptop with good battery life and its not something e540 can do

Fair enough. Mine is still stationary, with external monitor and keyboard. I really cannot complain.

I don't think you can go wrong with the x220. Get the i5 for more battery life, go IPS if you can and make sure you put an SSD in it.

The chiclet-style - done properly, like it is on thinkpads - actually works better than the old-style keyboards - at least IMO.
x230 is the sweet spot currently, x220 is getting old(er). If you want to play the occasional casual vidya or just generally want a gpu that is a bit beefier than the x220 one - get the x230.
x220 is still fine, but if you can get an x230 for just a minute upgrade in price, go for it, fag.

>>
>>56097761
basically the same. x230 basically looks the same as a x220. x240 is when they started changing it up for a more "modern" look. Can't say anything about x240+ quality - never had one in hand.
>>56097744
Why? Basically, the only thing differentiating the x230 keyboard from the x220 keyboard is the caps on the keys - the underlying mechanism is literally the same. Trust me, I've repaired multiple *20 and *30 series dankpads.
The thing that makes the chiclet style of the x230 superior is two things: 1 - it's easier to clean because of a 'straighter' design. 2 - it's easier to type because of that same straight design. What was previously lost to 'drop-off' to emulate the look of a more old-school keyboard is now more key real estate.
Of course, on a desktop I'd never use a chiclet (other than one of those tasty thinkpad-desktop keyboards maybe) - but for a laptop, it's just perfect. Also backlight.

Might even get an x260/T460s soon because hueg discounts. I'll see how shit they have gotten.

>>
>>56097960
i5 is more than enough.
IMO it's worth paying around 20-30% more on an x230, especially if it's pretty 'maxed' as in IPS, backlit keyboard. x230 also should come with SSDs more often as that became a more popular option when they were sold.

>caring about 1366x768 on a cheapo 12.5" laptop
Of course, on a 14"/15.6" 768 starts getting very shitty, but on 12.5 it's still acceptable imo. Of course I'd prefer FHD, but 768 werks and uses less resources&battery than FHD.
12.5" 768 is 125PPI
14" FHD is 157PPI
24" FHD (common desktop resolution if you aren't 1440p yet) is 92PPI
24" 1440p is 122PPI

Basically, 12.5" 768 has the same PPI as 24" 1440p.
You don't fucking NEED FHD on a 12.5".

>W520 (the one with Intel integrated graphics, not Nvidia)
This doesn't exist, all W520s have dedicated Quadro GPUs. If you mean the T520 with integrated graphics, it probably can't. HD 3000 is fine for basically everything except 3D. Give it a try if you already have one since I don't know for sure, but if not just find a dedicated graphics model. Even the Nvidia T520s aren't very powerful though, NVS 4200m is a weak little GPU. The W520's Quadros are what you want for stronk grafics power.
>>
>>56098066
I'm really surprised with my T420 too.

I've thrown a lot at this thing over the week and it's only disappointed twice, once with Paper Mario emulation (which is harder to do than other NGC/Wii games apparently) and installing the C++ Redistributable Packages and any programs that require them, which is partially my fault because I've been too lazy to update past SP1.

I would guess that it is a W520 and they just couldn't find out which graphics card it had, probably just ran dxdiag or something that wouldn't report the dedicated GPU. Still, I wouldn't bother with that listing, given that they don't specify screen resolution, which Quadro it has, and there are only stock photos shown. Even if it is a decent configuration, $500 is too much. I got my 2720qm/Q1000m/FHD W520 for $395 from Ebay, and it came in perfect shape with an SSD and the 170W adapter.

>using them at a desk at home

>>
>>56099828
Depending on which model you have and which power supply you're using with it, doing that could cause it to throttle the CPU.

Just use Lenovo Power Manager or TLP to set battery charge thresholds so it doesn't charge over 80%.
>>
>>56099856
Shit I didn't know that. I have a 65w psu but my x220 seems to work normally. According to the wiki, it should throttle without the battery. Is that outdated information?
>>
>>56099793
leave it plugged in
your battery is going to die at about the same time no matter what, might as well enjoy the time you have with it.
also remember it's heat that kills batteries the most, not charge cycles. so letting it go from 0-100 can actually be worse than just letting the battery do it's thing.

A couple things. Let me break it down for you.

T460
>heavier
>enables hot-swap feature due to second battery chassis, meaning you can switch out the back battery while the machine is running
>you can also upgrade the back battery to a 72Whr one, which sticks out of the bottom of the case by like half an inch or so, but gives you stupidly long battery life.
>Old school 2.1mm key travel plus usual trackpoint
>plastic screen casing, 1336p or 1080p options
>9mm SATA3 SSD or HD option

T460s
>ligher
>No hot-swap, you have to take off the back to replace the battery, so no carrying extra batteries or getting an extra big one
>That said, taking off the back is way less of a pain in the ass than the T460, which has a bunch of tiny plastic clips to potentially break as you take it off. T460s takes a couple screws and you're good to go
>Newer 1.8mm key travel, plus shorter trackpoint. Some people on leddit hate the new trackpoint, but I think it's fine (same on the T460p, which I'm currently typing on). Key travel and response is still amazing compared to any other laptop you can buy today, so no complaints on the .3mm reduction from me.
>carbon fiber(so stronger and thinner) screen casing, 1080p or 1440p options.
>Stupidly fast read/write times with the NVMe SSD. Not much of a practical difference in day to day use with SATA3, but hey, could come in handy in the future.

Any other questions you have?

The x230 keyboards are actually superior to the old ones. I almost fell for the old keyboard meme, but fortunately I went to a shop where I could try all the models for myself. I was surprised at how shit the x220 keyboards are. Sure, the layout might be better, but its not worth it. The backlight is also super nice.

fairly easy, just peel them off, and I usually give the back a good rub down with hand sanitizer.
then just kinda use the machine for a few weeks and all the residue should be gone, and it should look normal.
>scratches
pretty much impossible, but if it's a deep scratch i've found that going over the scratch with a fine tip sharpie, then rubbing the area with my finger can make it look better (if done properly).
It's too hard to describe how to do it properly to others so I wouldn't recommend trying unless you go slow and use very little.

does the X230 have the think light? or did they get rid of it for the xx30 series?

I am always informed when the Americans will come. :)

Generally question: Are ThinkPads a meme? I want a Notebook wich isn't slow while lurking (with Linux) and is able to run VMs, also with Linux (that's why I want 8GB). I don't want to play games, but it should be able to play .mkvs and browsing on Youtube with HD videos. So, is a ThinkPad for 200€ enough? (I am new to ThinkPads obviously.)
>>
>>56107477
What I can tell you is that I bought a T61 for 120€ a year ago, because I had to get a laptop fast and had no money, and it worked, it was a bit slow, but still works like a charm.
Recently I bought a T430 for 300€ and it is the best laptop I've ever owned, it handles everything I threw at it, even GTA V (with the 1GB Nvidia card, only 6GB RAM and no SSD).
>>
whats the average lifespan of X230?
>>
>>56107525

Currently ongoing as long as you're not careless. I wouldn't expect a 30 series thinkpad to go obsolete for a while unless they change the way cpu are made. Cpu power has been plateauing since about Sandybridge.

My current plan is to use my X230 for that purpose until 2019. This is based on how long I used a X201 for that and the build quality seems very similar.

I'm more careful with this one though and given how CPUs are developing my X230 might make it past 2020.
>>

Jesus christ same. I can't even use any of the "fixes" mods on other forms link to, like the Standalone Updater or anything.

It hung on "Checking for updates on computer" for something like 8 hours only to be told that "this update is unavailable for your system" or whatever. Thinking of just doing a clean install and hoping it resolves the issues.

The one I'm looking at now has capacity listed at 320gb yet HDD in title is 250gb. Do they just mean the t420 is only rated upwards of holding 320gb?

I might purchase it if it's in very good condition and comes with peripherals.

T420 pros:
>better keyboard layout
>DankPad (tm)
>cheaper
>no modding needed for chink batteries

T430 pros:
>better CPU
>better iGPU
>better dGPU
>USB 3 in all models
>backlit keyboard
>higher ram clock
>can be modded to use T420 keyboard

I forget which one had better default screen.

There is nothing wrong with T430 keyboard typing experience but some prefer the old layout and looks.

Is it worth letting the X220 keyboard to short circuit itself without covering the two pins?

According to ThinkWiki:
>Some people have done the keyboard replacement without this protective mod - and not reported any issues, even after years of use.
