I've got something working but haven't worked on it for a while. Will pick it up again if there's demand.

Is it really possible? That's awesome!
Do things like advanced scalers, display-resample, interpolation and user-shaders work?

Yes everything should work as-is. I want to get youtubedl working too but I have no idea if that's possible yet, haven't looked into it. Would be gr8 if you could just dump an url in the app and it would play it.

The current issues with it is that the ffmpeg hardware decoding backend for Android is still not that good, my nexus 9 can't play shit and I need to dive into ffmpeg code to find out why.

Every once in a while I come into a new feature or bug that I want added or fixed, and I type them down, so I'm gonna post some of them here in case anyone knows how to achieve them:

> Disable chapter markers on the seekbar*1
> "osd-scale-by-window=no" doesn't work for the seekbar*1
> Find a subtitle down loader that searches for a second subtitle after the first one downloaded (ex. subliminal downloads the same one over and over again)
> Display the playback time like "P no-osd cycle_values osd-level 3 1" does, but without the play/pause icon and (%) meter
> If on windowed mode, I leave the video playing, and click on the window without moving it, the video is paused until I let go the left click*2
> Skip "Audio: No" when cycling audio channels
> Ignore subtitles that aren't "eng" / "english"
> Subtitle tracks should be treated separately when delaying subtitles
> Force subtitle into two lines
> Automatically move subtitles into letterboxd black bars by detecting aspect ratio (anybody knows how to make a .lua script that would do something like "IF aspect ratio IS [Y:Z] THEN sub-pos=XX")

*1 - The one that appears when you press up/down
*2 - Note that I don't have left click bound to anything at all

The guy said in the last thread that he made this image by corrupting the file itself to fuck with mpv fanboys

That said, I have actually seen legitimate corruption like that in mpv when using
hwdec=vdpau

With
hwdec=no
it works fine, of course. (Except for some obscure formats, where seeking still generates artifacts)

Are you using multiple monitors? Nvidia drivers suck at vsync on multi-monitors, you have to explicitly set which one you want to sync to in the nvidia driver options.

If this is on a single monitor, try disabling all compositors (e.g. compton or compiz), and also make sure “ForceFullCompositionPipeline” is *off* (disabled)

Anyway, it should be possible to accomplish your goal somehow, because I know nvidia+mpv works fine on my end - but I'm using a minimal tiling window manager with no shitty compositor etc.

If you're using the stock unity interface then that would explain it (it uses an outdated and shitty fork of compiz which you can't disable - try something like i3)

ForceFullCompositionPipeline can help vsync in multi-monitor configurations but it caused other issues on my end, both related to performance and related to e.g. redrawing.

Compiz/compton may help for “ordinary” programs like terminals but they do nothing but get in the way for OpenGL applications like mpv which do their own vsync, which compositors interfere with
>>
>>56117865
>No man, it just seems kinda weird they haven't fix said bug
You must be new to the software development practices of big companies (especially hardware vendors)

It's not a bug unless PR says it's so, and it doesn't get fixed until they lose sales.

Compare for example the fact that nvidia started *advertising* features which were literally completely broken in the linux drivers (as in: it pretended to work but actually did nothing) which took them like 3 years to fix, and it was only fixed by coincidence since they were rewriting another part of the same code that had the bug.

This was despite an active bug report in which many users posted in-depth analysis of the problems including all information necessary to reproduce, test programs, proof that it wasn't working, information about which exact component was causing the issue, etc.

Nvidia just doesn't give a shit most of the time - they don't even reply to bug reports unless they happen to also have a corresponding ticket on their internal bug tracker (which lowly users can't access, because why bother engaging with the community?), and the only response will be copy/paste informing you that it's already a known issue

You sound like more of a fanboy than me, now explain me this why do my friends have no problem with multi-monitors and nvidia gpu+vsync?

All worked fine and dandy.
>>
>>56117999
>You sound like more of a fanboy than me,
I don't know what gave you that impression. I haven't defended any company. Want me to rip on AMD as well? Because I could go on for hours about how shitty AMD's drivers are. (In fact, I think nvidia's are better - that's why I fucking use them, which is how I know these issues)

>now explain me this why do my friends have no problem with multi-monitors and nvidia gpu+vsync?
And are your friends on Linux? Do your friends use 10-bit display/monitors? Do your friends' two monitors have different configurations (refresh rate or resolution)? Have your friends tried developing VDPAU applications?

“X isn't broken because my friend says he has no issues” is the dumbest fucking non-argument you can possibly make on a website dedicated to technology enthusiasts. It's like saying “I've had no problems with VLC” - yeah of course you have no problems if you're too blind to see colormatrix errors, levels mismatch or blocking/banding, don't have an ICC profile for your display, never try playing back HEVC, High10P or HDR content and think bilinear looks indistinguishable from jinc.. I'm sick and tired of hearing it. Either know what you'r talking about or don't comment at all

>>
>>56118133
With default settings? Are you using the proprietary nvidia drivers?
>>
>>56118145
>Go ahead, I want to hear the AMD version.
My list of AMD complains is outdated since I haven't touched them since the AMDGPU switch, but here's a short and very incomplete list of AMD driver issues I had under fglrx:

* Frequent segfaults. Many things in fglrx actually segfault the kernel driver if you try using them at all or slightly wrong (for example xv, vaapi, etc) which makes development near impossible.

* Vsync was pretty much a complete joke. In asymmetric multi-monitor situations, you get no vsync at all unless you enable “tear free mode” which drops the sync rate to 30 Hz for me and adds noticeable input lag to the entire desktop. In single monitor configuration, vsync only half-works (the sync delay is stable, but it's out of phase - the phase is essentially random: if you're lucky, it's in the black bars; if you're unlucky, it's in the middle of the image)

* No true 10-bit support whatsoever (despite advertising, and even listing this as an option in their settings panel) - trying to start X in depth 30 mode simply crashes. Their “10 bit display” checkbox is a marketing gimmick at best and an outright lie at worst, just like nvidia's. (It renders at 8 and then losslessly expands this to 10 during output, gaining you nothing). As far as I can tell, this is still true today, although inofficial patches to the open source kernel driver may enable this. (Haven't confirmed the rumors)

* No support for DRM/KMS at all (but this has probably changed)

* No real hwdec API. It sort of implements VAAPI, but it's flaky at best - and the API is terrible. No VDPAU whatsoever, for example.

* Very bad coverage and/or performance for advanced OpenGL features (e.g. 4.3+), like compute shaders or UBOs.

* Terrible OpenGL performance in general (compared to their DirectX performance on windows) - meanwhile nvidia has managed to support OpenGL on Linux almost just as well as DirectX on Windows (within tolerance) for quite some time now.

That's extremely odd, and shouldn't be happening. What window manager are you using? Can you try repreoducing it with just a minimal WM like i3 running?

Either way, I think this is worthy of a bug report, since mpv with no compositor should definitely be vsyncing correctly unless there's some bug somewhere. (It works fine on my end, which is what's confusing)

It's visual noise. I often download from rutracker and they include russian subtitles all the time. I cannot read anything other than english, so why would I want any other language in the subtitles? Yeah it's there for just a second when cycling channels, but it's still a feature I want.
>don't quite comprehend this one but do you mean this?
When a film is letterboxd and therefore has black bars at the top and bottom, I always put the subtitles within the black bar at the bottom so that it doesn't disrupt the picture. If the film is in, say, 4:3, there's no black at the bottom so the subtitles are then over the actual movie, but there's a plethora of aspect ratios that have this black bar at the bottom. The idea is that MPV automatically moves and resizes the subtitles into the black space at the bottom, if one is found to exist,. Again, one can do this manually by manually moving and resizing them with input, and, again, if we're talking about a end-games features, this is one that I want.

Just make it a priority and you won't have to deal with switching all the time, unless they name the subs in a weird way.

I am guessing letterboxd, is movie aspect ratio with black bars, IN the video itself.

If so, than sub-use-margin=yes worked for me with autocrop removing the black bars on the video.

Honestly family, just make a dropbox account and link your player to all the computers you have.

how to 101
-download mpv from bitbucket or sourcefourge
-make portable_config on mpv
-make/put scripts, shaders folders and config files on the folder.
-sync it up
-profit

I see no reason as to why anyone would benefit from having settings on appdata

How would you disable the color management feature? can't really find it on the manual.

You don't have color management turned on. Dxinterop means you have to set video colors to 0-255 in Nvidia control panel. No need for that with Angle.

You mean the color range on HDMI? I am using DVI.
>You don't have color management turned on.
So why are the colors so different? next possible problem I can think is the hwdec.

Can anyone tell me how to use nnedi3 with mpv?

I downloaded nnedi3-nns128-win8x6-all.hook from https://github.com/bjin/mpv-prescalers/tree/master for testing but I don't think anything's happening. my mpv.conf looks like this:

vo=opengl-hq:interpolation:blend-subtitles:cscale=ewa_lanczossharp:scale=ewa_lanczossharp:tscale=catmull_rom:tscale-clamp:temporal-dither:target-prim=bt.709:target-trc=bt.1886:gamma-auto:icc-profile-auto:3dlut-size=256x256x256:user-shaders="C:\Program Files\SMPlayer\mpv\Shaders\nnedi3-nns64-win8x6-all.hook"
video-sync=display-resample
audio-pitch-correction=yes
initial-audio-sync=yes
hwdec=no
ytdl-format=bestvideo+bestaudio
log-file=C:\test\output.txt

But when I run a video I get pic
i also don't know what's up with the contrast but ignore that, i just want nnedi3 to work
i was hoping for my cpu usage to increase, since i'm using the 128 neurons version, but it's identical (about 5-6% usage with a 3350p at 3.1GHz)

Any ideas?

I dunno if this is a mpv or vsync problem but everytime I watch animay I get some stutters when the screen is moving (like FPS drops in videogames). Everything is fine while watching movies.

I'm not using any custom config.
>>
>>56151714
Could be stutter or judder due to the mismatched framerate of the anime vs your screen's refresh rate. That would happen to everything you maybe just don't notice it on movies because they have more shit going. Either that or I suck dicks
>>
>>56151517
I appreciate it, this seems to have fix it, I'll check more into it later.

however the true question is, why the fuck does Nvidia like to limit the colors usage, this shit also happens when you put a HDMI as your input/output.

>>56151714
That does sound very weird, anime is playing fine here, what build/release are you using? log? computer specs?

You use youtube-dl instead.

anyhow, you just need to change the player in the livestreamer config file that it has IIRC.

mpv supports this, see

Why not using SuperRes? It avoids some of the nnedi3 upscaling artefacts. However I still prefer ewa_lanczos + adaptive-sharpen (2 passes, 0,3 strength) to get sharp picture.
>>
>>56156221
All the screenshots I've seen of superres have been absolutely terrible
>>
>>56156251
That's why madshi added anti-bloating and anti-ringing features. Looks good with nnedi3 luma upscaling/doubling but it needs multiple passes to be efficient!
>>
>>56156302
>looks good
Feel free to share a screenshot. Personally, I don't believe in magic.

No algorithm can invent information that isn't there, which is why SuprerRes of any kind always looks terrible/artificial. All they do is distort the features to make it seem sharper than it is, but for photos and live action it absolutely fucks up the image. Might work well for flat cartoons / line art with no texture, but that's about it.
>>
>>56156331
And how can it fuck up the picture if all it does is removes blur and ringing artifacts?
>>
>>56156580
Digital image processing is more complicated than you seem to believe.

>removes ringing
This makes the image looks unnatural. Ringing is a good thing, because it preserves the frequencies our eyes respond to

>removes blur
This is the wrong way to phrase it. “remove blur” is the same as “add information”. Doing so would require making up information, which you can't do. So in practice, all algorithms that try to invent information where it doesn't exist end up distorting or warping the features instead, which is what every single SuperRes-type algorithm (of which I've seen dozens) ends up doing.

There is simply no way to get free information out of nothing. ewa_lanczos is pretty much mathematically perfect in that it loses no information and adds no information. There's not much else to do, either you lose information (shit scaler) or you try and add information (suprerres, unnatural)
>>
>>56156660
I'm talking about currently avaliable SuperRes which is anti-ring tier shader, not those "enhancers".

>would require making up information, which you can't do.
of course you can, from source image, because upscalers add blur you just remove it after upscaling.
>>
>>56156765
>I'm talking about currently avaliable SuperRes which is anti-ring tier shader, not those "enhancers".
I don't give a shit whether you want to call it “enhancing”, “anti-ringing/blurring” or whatever, I'm telling you how it is. Your marketing tactics are irrelevant.

>of course you can, from source image, because upscalers add blur you just remove it after upscaling.
I give up, nobody can be this stupid
>>
>>56156801

of course it dosn't remove artifacts, only reduces.
and I don't give a fuck if you give a fuck.
>>
>>56156913
>and I don't give a fuck if you give a fuck.
Great, then we can agree to not give a fuck about each other.

In the meantime, I'll continue not implementing superres. If you want it that badly, you can learn image processing and implement it yourself. (If you still want to by then)
>>
>>56156970
