Why is this shit being pushed so hard?
I was just denied a train ticket because I didn't have one of these and wanted to pay cash.

WTF is this shit
>>
>>56104256
They can't track you with cash.

also banks like cards because they generate interchange fees. businesses (as in "anyone who accepts money for a product or service", public or private) like cards because paying interchange fees is much easier and faster than handling, counting, storing, and transporting cash. Both of them like the idea of keeping a database of everyone who buys things from them, what they bought, for how much, when they bought it, and from where.

>>
>>56104338
It's an opal card. It's like a debit card but only for public transport.

All cash terminals at the train station were closed and I was told to buy opal or walk home.

>>56104350
We have something similar here called an ORCA card, its like an e-purse for transit, it uses NFC and it'll let you do x-fers. (if you take 5 buses in 2 hours, your only charged for the first one)

>>
>>56104375
It has its advantages, but I just hate the way it's being forced onto everyone.
>>
My city's bus system has had NFC cards for god knows how long now, but the bus drivers still do accept cash.
>>
>>56104256
>car breaks down

>"i can't accept that you need a card"
>"please step off the bus sir"
>everyone behind me had a card even the homeless guy in tattered clothes

>>
And this is what you get for abandoning private, simple, no bullshit cash for your credit and alternative payment method bullshit.

You have no one to blame but yourselves. Welcome to the surveillance state future. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
>>
>>56104256
Terrorists use cash.
>>
I recently moved fro Seoul to Calgary. In Seoul with a 'tmoney' card you simply swipe wherever to use transit, all your transfers are automatic, it calculates your fare... Here in Calgary you need to count out coins and show them to the driver who gives you a paper transfer. It's comically antiquated and annoying.
>>
>>56104375
The difference is that ORCA isn't forced, you can still pay cash on buses and at train ticket kiosks.
>>
>>56104463
HEY I LIVE IN CALGARY.
>>
>>56104481
Shithole, only here gearing up for a trip. Today was the first actual summer day (weather wise) in the month I've been here.

Also haven't taken a bus where the driver didn't randomly go on break for 10 minutes leaving everyone sitting there. How in Christ does that still pass in a developed country.>>56104481
>>
>>56104480
This.
I wouldn't have minded getting an opal because it's more convenient, but now I'm regretting it.

Just came it, feeling a little bitter.
>>
>>56104418
Guess what? Normal people don't want to wait for some faggot to spend minutes fumbling around with change when trying to get onto a bus.
>>
>>56104418

When you looked at their time table you didn't think of looking how much a fare was or how it works? Very few transportation vehicles today will actually take cash because of the risks and hassles of it.

A month ago I was in D.C. had never been there and I had to use the subway, researched it the day before didn't have no problems. Those systems exist because of reasons, you need to take the bus/train you're going to have to conform to it.

Inb4 I don't want to be tracked.

If they track you at all its so that they can coordinate/manage schedules, you're just a dot on the map to them.

>>

Also has rained constantly here. Used to live in Banff don't remember the constant rain all summer.
>>

>>
>>56104463
That's more of a north american thing. Canadians love cars almost as much as Americans, which is why our mass transit is generally left to stagnate.

And as an aside, paper ballots for elections is actually more secure than the electronic machines down in the US.

>>
>>56104367
It's cute that you think that comic actually is a serious representation of the differences between conservatives and liberals.

Considering that the group who always wants to force people to work for the stuff that the government gives them is the right-wing. From "welfare to work" programs, to plans to do the same shit with foodstamps, to practically making labor camps during the great depression, conservative governments can't stand the idea of helping people who actually need it, for no compensation.

And for all the talk of personal responsibility, they're awfully capable of ducking it when it comes to everything Trump says.
>>
>>56104737
Montreal is pretty great used to live there to.

Calgary is probably the most American big Canadian city, in that it's spread out and stagnant. Whole city is shut down when the sun goes down. Everything is so massively spread out, and yet there's little quality green space.

Apropos this thread, my brothers who lives here tells me the mayor is giving all poor people unlimited $5 bus passes or something.

Some UW student reversed engineered the ORCA system and was almost arrested. Apparently they used to store the dollar balance on the card itself (according to the guy), making it theoretically possible to create a spoofed card with unlimited rides.

Look up Farebot on Google Play (might be on F-Droid too since it's MIT licensed) for a proof of concept.

Also, Tacoma here. Get me out of this lower working class garbage neighborhood.
>>
>>56105199
Where I live we have pin, but no chip. Banks are rolling it out chips en masse now though.

We have transport passes in NYC that are one time pay for unlimited uses for up to a whole month. You can still be tracked by them though, they digitally log each use.
>>
>>56104256
Stop being such a Luddite. This shit is better than paper tickets in almost every conceivable way.
>>
>>56105271
False.
>>
>>56104256
Get used to it, electronic payments are tracked easier since every payment has your name tied to it. Give it a decade or two and you won't be able to pay with cash anywhere.

Thanks to EU funding, my city pushed the same kind of shit for public transportation, every card is tied to a bank account and they pretty much require to know all your personal details to get the card.

Regular ticket prices went up 3x and they obsoleted all the other means of getting tickets to make sure everyone buys one. Even children.

Normies didn't object to it, so now it's real.
>>
>>56105572
The price went up because you live in a socialist shithole where unions ask and government oblige because muh votes. It has nothing to do with the means of payment.
>>
>>56105271

Australia's government is LITERALLY composed of criminals, and their sons and daughters. What more did you expect?
>>
>>56105361
They need to store the balance on the card so you can process it quickly in the bus even if the reader is in offline mode.

They also have a central database with all the card information and balances and they sync up data from the readers there. If they detect anything funny they just blacklist the card and/or contact the card owner. The blacklist gets synced up to the readers.

That's how they do it around my area at least.
>>
>>56105629
Whatever the reason, the result is the same. It doesn't matter.
>>
>>56105572
How do tourists buy tickets? My area has anonymous 10x tickets and day tickets designed for tourists.

Japan is almost entirely cash based, with the exception of IC cards for mass transit. Convenience stores and some major chains accept those same cards for purchases.

I never see anyone use them that way, but I sure as hell use them myself. Why would you not want the convenience of skipping cash and coin payments?

>>56106835
The constitution is directions for and why the government is what it is. It clearly delineates the differences between the people, the state(local government) and the federal government. It is our our founding document that outlines why the rules are the way they are. Issue we have is lawlessness and people making shit up when the constitution was written in plain English on purpose so laymen could understand.

To say that following the law is "ridiculous" is beyond arrogant and childish. Follow the amendment process or get fucked

>>56114027
Okay, nobody seems to understand this very simple concept, but going to jail is not about crimes that you've committed. It's about what can be proven in court. If it can be shown you were in X place at Y time, you can be suspected of a crime and charged. While the system is designed to try to avoid it, innocent people DO go to jail, and very often because of simple shit like that.

Had a bad night? Took a train to the park to get some air, try to relax? Well look here, there was a dead woman found in that park. Killed within 20 minutes of you being there. Your footprints were found near the bush she was at. Don't have an alibi? Darn, guess it's up to the jury, with only that information.
>>
>>56114538
While our legal system needs a cleanup, a lot of the laws are written in somewhat open ended manners, specifically because of how creative crime can get.

The legal system exists to sort out the guilty from the not guilty. You can kill someone, but there are several different crimes that that action can fall under. Manslaughter, Murder, etc.

Nobody is convicted for "killing someone" they are convicted for the crime that they have been judged to have committed based on the evidence and circumstances of the situation.

yes I too can argue whilst ignoring the practical realities of the situation :^)

>car fags get mad about the truth

that guy's problem is that he didn't have the car maintained properly.

There is nothing wrong with not wanting to do the maintenance yourself, and economic forces dictate that menial labour like car maintenance is paid near the minimum legal rate.

if people get mad about that, well, lol.

Not even close to collapsing. Nice imagination though.

Those things are required for life.
We have a right to life.
QED.
>>
>>56104969
Nobody said it was a constitutional right. But it is not a constitutional right to keep 100% of the money you earn to yourself. And if the majority of people decide that taxing and spending is a good idea then it is their right as the citizens of a republic to enforce that on the whole population. This is a fact.

Isn't it illegal to refuse cash for a business transaction because it's "legal tender for all debts public and private"?
>>
>>56120076
No, and you're grossly misinformed.
A debt is not incurred until a service is rendered.
If you're at a restaurant and the bill comes and you already ate your food and they refuse to accept your paper money, you can legally walk out because you attempted to pay and they refused to accept a legal currency.

Now, if you're at a store, and they only accept credit cards, or only bills smaller than $20, etc.
They have every right to refuse your payment because a service or good hasn't been given to you.
>>
>>56104256
Because you're holding up the line fumbling with your wallet.

>im almost certain this isn't a problem anymore

Ahahhaha, you'd be wrong. Texas mandates that students also be taught that creationism is also an option (and more likely true). Rick Perry is a piece of shit and you can probably blame him for that. As for the video games, it was entirely conservatives pushing for legislation until that whole 'video games are art' thing.

The real problem is that conservatives decide to float too far to the right. You do understand the entire conservative mindset is to not change, not to grow, not to spend - it rests firmly on an idea of stagnancy, that changing is bad and only what was is correct.

Liberalism can have a similar problem, thinking every problem requires radical change.

At least, that's how it is in today's world.
>>
>>56105281
Credit cards are chip and signature and debit cards are chip and pin. Of course, most places let you run debit cards as credit, so it doesn't matter.
>>
Are there really people who pay for everything with credit card?

Why the fuck
>>
>>56105332
This is retarded. Surveillance is watching you with the intention of finding what you're doing wrong. Keeping track of the kind of stuff you purchase at a grocery store is not surveillance.
>>
>>56120472
The benefits and security. The security is that Credit cards have insurance on them, debit cards don't. You can always get your money back if someone mis-charges you or steals your card.

Benefits include better credit score and an array of things depending on the card. It's actually a good idea to use a credit card if you're well off and will actually pay it off without letting interest accrue.

my oyster data was used to fine a doubletap/ reversal

i was on medication at the time ( causes drowsiness )

officer detected double tap for $200 fine

appealed this. Appeal was rejected. reason, officer did not agree i was on medication ( i posted the box in the appeal ) oyster data showed historic reversals

if i wish to appeal i now must go to court

this is the future.

transit officers now decide if you are on medication and use card history as leverage against a double tap

australians be aware
>>
>>56121600
what the fuck is a double tap?
also, isn't that literally public intoxication?
>>
>>56121628
double tap is reverse fair ( fair cancel , 2 physical swipes

medication is for insomnia/depression gp prescribed side effect drowsiness
>>
>>56121656
reverse fare?
why is this even allowed?
>>
>>56121680
if you tap on then change your mind

i tapped twice because i forgot i tapped first and meds made me a bit high for 3 minutes or so had just ingested them in a rush before work
>>
>>56121711
30 minutes*

the officer ( civilian, not police ) determined i was not on medication by no method they simple issued the ticket, with their determination held on the appeal, by no method. ( ie, " i think that" )

Lmao nigga soon as that shit hits the floor it's fucking gone untraceable. Card is unique and transactions are covered by insurance, if it gets stolen you cancel the card and the bank pays back any money that was stolen.

And what do you see wrong with the constitution exactly? That it doesn't provide for free food?

Listen, no one bought my sorry ass food when I was homeless. I found work and got myself fed. Others have to find a path to do the same. I would love to help them, but first we have to stop feeding Sha'qwanda and her litter of 7

You're mixing your concepts there son, just wait a few more years and you will start to understand.

It's not that at all. It's showing how much has changed from Washington to Obama.

>>56106835
Because no one has proposed something better. Every document "better" seeks to undermine one or more of the rights granted in amendments 1 - 10. Much like many of the politicians right now on both sides of the political spectrum are trying to undermine these rights.
