Otherwise it really depends on the company. More and more these days understand IT's role in the company and act nicely around them.

Depends on the compan and your position. Help desk? You rank somewhere between the janitor and the mail clerk. When you reach the management and mid-tier systems/engineering level, you get more respect and your compensation (and unfortunately stress) also shoots up.

Just don't stay in fucking helpdesk longer than a year if you cherish your sanity.
