Will there ever truly be a "year of Linux"?
Pic unrealated
No, but it's probably for the best that Linux never goes mainstream.
Every time something goes mainstream, it begins to cater to the lowest common denominator.

True dat.
Is there a year of Windows?
Is there a year of Mac OS?

Honestly, I don't think this would be as much of an issue with GNU+Linux due to the concept of distros.
Sure, one or two distros will probably take the lead, but as long as it's a fork of a distro mostly used in server use (Ubuntu being a fork of Debian), I could see it going pretty well.
You'll always have your gentoo and arch distros.

This. Also with more mainstream appeal I think there would be a lot more work done to the kernel and frameworks to compete for a share of the market which would lead to thicker upstreams.
As long as GPL stays king there would be no problems
