Playing TF2/counterstrike for 30 hours a week got me nowhere in high school. I should have played a sport or actually applied myself to something.
I really can't play video games for any length of time. All I end up thinking about is how I could be using that time to do something constructive.

I still use an AMD FX-6300 even though I could afford a faster CPU but it's perfectly sufficient for my work. Instead I save money for more existential things. One day the washing machine is going to break down and I can easily afford a good replacement without going into debt, etc....
As long as you don't play games, a 5 year old CPU is perfectly for fine for many tasks, including software development. Just buy enough RAM and an SSD. You don't need the latest Intel i7.
