Most of their watches are ugly. Looks aside they make decent mechanical movements with hacking/handwind and other features. ST2130 is a direct clone of 2824 as well but much cheaper. Their watches are meh, but their movements are very good value for price.

ETA are overpriced, and the 2824 is just a modernized 70's movement, but that chink clone is rough as fuck. Also I see dirt specs, not a good sign if that is a factory photo.

Not a factory photo, just an old one lying around. The seagull is a bit rougher than a real 2824 but overall pretty acceptable. There are other asian clones of the 2824 though and the Seagull one is by far the best.

Workhorse "tractor" movement. Works great but bulky as fuck. Hand wind mechanism also wears out the gears and eventually requires service so if you have one, try to keep it running from automatic winding. Most watches with it are pretty thick.

Yes, because three of the best volume produced automatic movements of all time were'nt developed in the 1970s before the quartz revolution, after which everyone stopped giving the slightest fuck about functional mechanical movement design.

Go look up the Omega 56x/75x, ETA 2892 and Seiko 52xx you ignorant horological peasant.

Except that:

>Sinn make their advances in technology available, instead of flaunting them in prototypes

So you, and that Steinhart shill, can fuck right off. Sinn are not another company simply slotting ETA movements into good-looking cases, they're a serious engineering firm who invest heavily in development.

>Do you think they would put lume dots that can't be seen on a watch?
I have lumed watches that I cannot read in the dark.

There's a reason why ISO diver certification demands "legibility at 30cm in total darkness", and not "HAZ LOOM DOTS". Small dots of lume are not legible in total darkness because your eyes are constantly altering their focal length.

It's electronic the rotor is magnetic around the edges, and is spun using small electrical pulses sent from the 24V battery. The clock itself cost $3000 to build, which is kinda ridiculous since most cars cost like $50-$100k.

In retrospect Rolex just charged me $500 to do a complete maintenance including a new mainspring and COSC calibration. I've been out of the micro diver game to not know what that particular watch is but I guess it looks nice enough for $330. Not a fan of the 6 o'clock date, though. In the world of micros I'm probably more excited by the Aevig Balaur, not sure if I'm going to actually order one since I'd prefer the internal bezel to be minutes and not hours.

I bought it from a fellow diver, I'm second owner, the watch had a hard life over the 20 odd years before i bought it.
Had to replace the case because it had some nasty gouges.
Also first service for the watch so there were a few worn parts.
Dial was perfect and no leaks, once it was serviced completely i bought a NOS case and bracelet I got a deal on and had the crystal replaced.
Rolex was kind enough to assist with it all and gave me re issue certificate when they put the serial on the new case.
The watch had a adventurous life and i plan to keep up the tradition
$2500 and i got a -2 sec per day rolex that i can use as my dive/adventure watch

>>56089673
Decent looking seiko, and you probably spared it from being used in a suicide bomb attempt.

If the case and service was all that was required, from how it reads, it seems $2500 is the price after the new case and service. Which would be a steal.

Yea avg. price on a 20 year old sub is around $4k to 4.5k overall a good price. Especially since its directly from Rolex.

Am I the only newfag that is shocked by how inaccurate these expensive watches are? Like losing multiple seconds everyday is not very good. How are people ok with this?
>>
>>56093324
Even then, I think at this point most Sub owners don't care for the bracelet, almost everyone I see uses that same "Rubber 'b'" strap that anon has.

Hell, owner of a toy shop near here got his new Sub last week, As of next week he's ordering in a Rubber 'b' for it.

But I know what you mean anyway, whether or not the bracelet gets used is irrelevant as to the cost and material value.
>>
>>56093379
Then feel free to buy Quartz.
I buy mechanical because I'm fascinated with the engineering behind them, and I'm not autistic enough to where a watch being 5 seconds off will bother me.
What a watch may gain one day, it could very lose the next, and at the end of the month, the watch may be a minute out. It doesn't get to be a problem unless you let it get to 5 minutes, then it can fuck with your plans if everything is 5 minutes awry.
>>
>>56093428
How accurate are quartz?
>>
>>56093448
Very.
>>
>>56093476
This irks me then. Intentionally buying something that works less well simply because it's more complicated and more expensive or whatever is pretty silly.
>>
>>56093379
So let's say a watch ticks 8 times a second, and it's fast by about 2.5 seconds per day. That's suppose to be 28,800 ticks every hour, but it's actually doing 28,800.83333. Literally less than one extra tick for nearly 15 thousand oscillations. In all, on the whole day, instead of 691,200 ticks it would be 691220.

After 5 days it would be up to 12.5 seconds fast. 100 extra ticks on the normal ~3.5 million. And if your watch hacks the solution would be to pull the crown for 12 seconds and then push it back in to put you back at sub-second precision. Basically no effort at all.

They're very accurate.
>>
>>56092820
I do, but do you, headfuck?
>>
>>56093379

I was shocked when I got into watches as well, but then you start reading about how watches work and their history, and it's actually fucking amazing that some of them only lose a few seconds per day.

Time keeping as it turns out is really hard. It took humanity eons to get truly accurate time keeping technology. And that involved understanding the unseen laws of the universe.

If you want accuracy, look at the Seiko springdrive movements.
>>
>>56093519
No effort at all? Having to reset your watch every few days is effort.
>>
>>56093502
Then, what are you doing here, you underage 10$ Casio cuck?
>>
>>56093548
Some people like their watches and don't mind interacting with them.

Besides, it can be done while at a red light or on the toilet. It's nothing.
>>
>>56093561
So a $10 casio keeps better time than your $8000 rolex and he's the cuck? Hahaha. You guys are complete tossers.
>>
>>56093502
To buy anything simple because
>It's more expensive
Is such a bullshit line and should never relate to anything. Lord above no one in this thread is that far up their own ass as to buy something simply because it's expensive.

However, to buy something because it is more complicated, well, that depends on if you appreciate the engineering behind something.

If you're buying purely for accuracy, then just go digital, but a good looking digital is near impossible to come by.
A good looking Quartz isn't that hard to come across, but they're often sold cheap, as is a virtue of the quartz movement, and you can feel this in the quality of the materials used.

You can often tell the quality of something from how it feels in your hand, the weight, the materials, the build, these are things you can tell instantly on a good mechanical watch, and it is very easy to very quickly fall in love with those things, and frankly, those are things that are very hard to find, or simply do not exist in quartz watches.
>>
You guys jumped the shark. This thread has no business being on /g/ as you've just admitted your fancy watches are nothing more than jewelry pieces that keep awful time. There is ZERO technology relevant discussion happening here if you are not talking about the most accurate timepiece movements available. Take it to >>>/fa/

Skeleton watches look tacky regardless of context. The only excuses for skeletonized watches is as exhibition prototypes, and to show off innovative escapements.

The Fossil you posted is neither. It's a generic, Chinese turd of a movement. If you want a cheap, nice, mechanical watch, look into Chinese/Korean brands who use Japanese movements.

The Miyota 9015 is a 3-hand automatic movement with a date complication, and it can be found in watches under $200.

Well, I got mine for about $170 late last year, so it wasn't too bad. Mine has the 8982 module, so going by a quick Google search, the perpetual calendar has until 2019. The temp and calendar aren't that big of a deal to me, though. I just love the way it looks. It's my only watch that's gotten compliments irl.

ok, the meme has got to end.

/g/, I will level with you just this once. I've had a good upbringing and been fortunate to meet a lot of successful people. About 3 years ago I started getting interested in watches and paying attention to which kind of watch other people wore. This is my conclusion; those that really have money will often have many watches, but most of the time they will prefer a simple, easy on the wrist, discrete and practical watch over a big bling rolex or 20m WR patek. The reason is that they don't want or need the attention, and for them, being able to spend 15k on a watch is a proof of nothing. While sailing, I've noticed many times that the guy with the smaller/cheaper boat will wear the bigger/more expensive watch, while the converse is also generally true. Poor people tend to look up to Rolex, LV-bags and Hermes scarfs as a sign of "I have made it", but these items are so common nowadays that they have lost what little distinction they ever had in the first place. Heck, even a bmw x6 or range rover is getting common. 'Fake it till you make it' is not about wearing a watch that represents 5% of your net worth. Remember, the people you want to impress will not be impressed by a rolex while the sort of people you dont want to impress are planning where to relieve you of it.
>>

Yes. So do you actually think the certification makes a better diver's watch?
Do you also think COSC certification makes a watch more accurate?

ISO certification requires every single watch to be tested to 125% of its rated depth. This means you are going to get a watch that is far less likely to fail the first time you take it into the water. The same is true of COSC, does it make your watch more accurate? No, but it means every one was tested to meet a certain standard of accuracy instead of being a total crap shoot within the specs of the movement.

>>
>>56097413
Sure. And it also means a watch can't be ISO certified because it doesn't have a bezel locking mechanism, even if it does survive 300% of its rated depth.
Not having the certification doesn't mean it's bad.

I also sail, and in my experience, the people with the more expensive boats aren't even wearing a watch, if they need the time, they ask the nearest person.

But actual sport sailors (who are also considerably wealthy), tend to wear tool-watches or G-shocks on rubber/NATO straps. A lot of chronographs too, for timing maneuvers etc.

If I were to buy a Rolex I would buy for me and not anyone else. Don't assume you can generalize everyone who ever wanted anything luxury. No I am not rich, however I am looking to buy a Submariner as a milestone to myself. That milestone is:

1. Graduate
2. Stable job
3. Buy a house in a decent neighborhood
4. Eliminate any debt

It literally took me a month of saving up and selling guns that I rarely shoot to get $6600. Now I just have to wait until a lightly used one to show up because I hate buying new.

Just curious, what all did you sell that was worth almost $7k?

Ironically, golfing is among the most hazardous activities when it comes to risk of harm to your watch. If you hit dirt with your club, the shock traveling up your wrist could be enough to dislodge both spring bars. I've read multiple stories on various forums of ppl losing their watch/dislodging movement components with a bad swing.

The explanation here is that the closer the frequency of the balance wheel is to the changes in motion of the watch (arms swinging while walking), the more this motion will affect the accuracy. The swinging of our arms when walking is a pretty low frequency, so the lower the frequency of the movement, the closer it is to the motion of swinging arms. If the watch is just sitting still all the time, it probably doesn't matter.
