Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

The average Chinese person doesn't really need to bypass the firewall. It's the foreigners who live there that have the greatest incentive to do so. Most of them just buy shitty VPN services that only work half the time. I'm looking for a more /g/ solution that will work better.

See https://superuser.com/questions/62303/how-can-i-tunnel-all-of-my-network-traffic-through-ssh on how to do this on linux/osx. On windows you can probably only use tunneling by letting putty setup a SOCKS5 tunnel, which should work fine with most services like email and browsing.

Also, this is an interesting article: http://blog.zorinaq.com/my-experience-with-the-great-firewall-of-china/

Note that they monitor all traffix so they will immediately know if you connect to a known VPN. SSH traffic is a whole different story, they won't be able to distinguish. Anyway, they won't give a rats ass if foreigners or upper class people peek out of the firewall, it's the plebs they want to keep down.

Because he doesn't implement the modules, other kernel developer do it for him. It's also actually tricky: The modules are dynamically linked, which means, inside the GPL zone is a link that points to the binary module outside the GPL zone. If this violates the GPL is discussed for years.

The correct answer is don't use GNOME 3.

But if that's not an answer, I'd go with either debian testing or arch/antegros. You really can't go wrong with either, so pick whichever you are more comfortable with. It doesn't matter a whole lot. (I would gamble GNOME runs better on debian though.)

It's really not even a big deal, I'm actually fine with 45 I'm just testing a bug I had on a previous install with 48 that I nuked, and am just trying to track down if it's a debian issue or something else.

>>56080565

>>
>>56080508

>>
>>56080591
It's okay and has its strengths, but I would honestly just go with arch itself if you aren't afraid of the unknown.

There's been a lot of controversy with the competence of the devs, and I think that has turned a lot of people off from it. There used to be a lot of flack with how they freeze literally EVERY package for an undisclosed amount of time, but my understanding is that's gotten better (in part because upstream arch packages have gotten better.)

If you want the benefits of arch and don't mind sacrificing bleeding edge for stability, it can be a pretty good choice. (Apparently drivers just werk on desktops)

>>56080607
openSUSE was one of my earlier experiments and I still fucking love it. The only thing that turns me off is that packagse aren't really as up to date as any other OS, but it has a lot of cool things going on. Package management is good, the OS works really well with plasma, and it has a rolling release and standard release version. It's pretty damn stable too.
>>
honestly the only legit reason to install manjaro/antergos is if you've already installed arch normally and want to reinstall without the hassle

installing arch linux for a first timer is a good learning experience for anyone
>>
>>56080591
There also memes around about Manjaro, don't fall for them.

There's a meme about SSL issues (people claim Manjaro devs forget updating website SSL certs), but it isn't true, the cert holder who gives out the certs was too late.

There are also memes that claim Manjaro holds back packages for weeks, which isn't true also. Packages are managed like on Debian, stable, testing and unstable, where unstable is as fresh as arch.

I assumed you wanted to install something from the testing repo - then it would be fucked up if it needed a dependency that's not in testing.

For your problem there is no maintainer, so you can either try to fix it yourself (and maybe break things) or wait until a maintainer ports that version of FF to your system.
>>

There's your problem. (I'm that guy he was responding too and just gathered this.)

That firefox 48 is only available in the unstable sid repo because it depends on something in that repo.

Recently my gaymen pee see has become a pain in the ass to maintain. I'm considering selling it and getting a full time comfy laptop for light gaming and school work.

My old rig is almost 5 years old now and while its still sufficient, I wont be full time gaming as much, and am open to the idea of either building a mini itx to bring to college with me, or getting a nice laptop. I want laptop with a decent amount of power under the hood, but not something chunky and colorful with logos all over it that screams "IM A GAMING LAPTOP", although if my best options do looks like that I'll consider it. Only things I want to be doing on it is some gaming, internet shit like watching vids, social media, shitposting here etc. I also want to try my hand at coding again, I only know some basic java and C++ but i want to learn some more.

I at some point wanted to make the transition from windows 7 to linux, as imo win 7 was the last decent windows os, and I have to make the switch at some point. I have almost no experience with linux, but I'm willing to learn and dont want to be held down by limited flavor or distro just because I chose a beginner friendly one.

I have a budget of about 800-1200 bucks, depending on how decent the setup is, and I'm willing to buy used. Is this a realistic budget, and if it is what laptop and distro should I aim for? How should I go about learning linux, and whats the first thing I should do after installing whatever distro I choose?
