I have a question about replacing parts on boards. If anything like that were to happen to any one of my machines, I'd be terrified I'd break anything. I have practically no experience with soldering. Were you put off the first time you replaced something on the board?
>>
>>56078151
Not really. I have some soldering experience from high school electronics class. There's plenty of tutorials on youtube for that sort of thing if you're interested.

With this mac this was the first time I had to discharge a CRT. As long as you have the right tools (long flat-head screwdriver alligator-clipped to ground) you're totally safe. Kind of unnecessary with the Classic series since they have bleeding resistors that drain out the high voltage, but I didn't want to take any chances.

I posted about this box once before, but I couldn't stick around to read the replies.

Basically I picked this thing up from my local university's tech bin (always worth a look). It powers on, the HDD clicks about for a second, but unfortunately there's no CMOS beep, and nothing comes up on the monitor. How would I go about diagnosing this fellow?

Whoever actually built this computer had no consideration for anyone doing anything inside the case, as it appears to be impossible to reach (or read) the CPU as it's behind the disk drive holders, and the ram is obscured by all of the cables, so I don't even know what the hardware even is yet.

try pulling out the hard drive and just plugging it into power and nothing else, see if it spins up then, some systems don't like to spin up their drives until after POST has cleared

also post pics of it, I want to know who made it, looks kind of seagate-esque but I can't figure it out

why do that crt type exist? flat crts are best those round are terrible
>>
>>56094616
Flat thing's weren't IN, in 1982
>>
>>56094616
CRT TV images were created by a ray drawing the image on the screen. This ray would go back and forth in lines.
Now, without a curve, the ray travels further to hit a point at the left (or right) edge of the screen than it does in the middle. This creates a distortion in the image.
By curving the screen, the distance between the ray's source and any point on the screen was consistent (enough) leading to (almost) no distortion.

Newer CRTs, the flat ones, have special circuits in them to keep the image in focus with the flat screen.

A 128k IIe or IIc will play 99% of Apple II games. There are still a few that use some weird illegal opcodes and only work on the II+, but those have all been patched by now (it was usually the copy protection that was the problem). The IIe is actually slightly more compatible than the IIc since it has the original 6502 (not the 65C02 which caused some of the opcode issues) and can support the game paddles that some early games need.

The IIgs isn't bad, but it has issues with some Apple II stuff. I'd say the IIgs is 95% compatible. Of course the RGB output makes Hi-Res and Double Hi-Res graphics look a bit 'funny' sometimes.

A IIe with some disk drives (I recommend two but you can get by with one) and a Super Serial Card shouldn't run you more than $30-$50. This will allow you to play just about everything out there and you can transfer files to disks using ADTPro. I'd also recommend a nice Apple II monitor since they seem to do the best at artifacting for some reason, but you can get by with any old monitor or a TV.
>>
>>56095330
Good to know, I'm not personally interested in the Apple //, getting a C64 soon.
>>
>>56095265
it was the worst reply tho. anime posters can only shitpost
>>
>>56095330
I kinda remember a lot of the first games I tried playing required a joystick with no keyboard option. Not easy to play these games on the IIc or IIGS.

And although the IIGS is only about 95 % compatible with the older games, it has whole repertoire of games that do not have an equal game to be played on older machines. So I believe this raises the compatibility to 99.9 % for the IIGS and maybe 90% for all the older models.

So I vote IIGS.
>>
>>56095354

I'd also go with the IIe. The IIc's lack of expandability can be a problem and no cassette port makes it kind of hard to get software onto it. It also can't use 13 sector disks. However, Apple did have paddles that plugged into the D-shell joystick port on the IIe/IIc but they're kind of hard to find.

A IIe with a DHGR card should be able to run just about any Apple II game in existence including ones with weird-ass copy protections (especially Sierra and Broderbund games) and games with illegal opcodes (eg. the space combat in Ultima I). I'd recommend the IIe for maximum compatibility especially if you want to play off of original disks. Also as far as I know, the only stuff that actually uses those extra 65C02 opcodes are late version of ProDOS, AppleWorks, and Copy II+.
>>
>>56095375
its not the anime. its that people posting anime images are just shitposters that know nothing about the things they talk about.
>>
>>56095429
Getting a Portfolio isn't that hard. I have two and one for parts... They are still cheap on ebay.
>>
As far as the IIgs is concerned, a unit with the Revision 1 ROMs and memory expansion will be the best. The Revision 3 ROMs break some native mode IIgs games, but ironically make the IIgs more compatible with 8-bit games due to bug fixes. Some late IIgs games like Wolfenstein 3D are not feasible without CPU accelerators and like 8MB or something of memory, which will cost you big bucks.
>>
>>56095259
Is it x86?
>>
>>56095462
Cripes man, the IIc and IIgs have a 115 baud serial port. Why would you need the silly cassette port to transfer software onto them?

Other than that, some nice accessories include a Mockingboard (at least 30 games can use this) and a mouse (probably around 30 as well).

A composite monitor is not absolutely necessary unless you want to use 80 column text which is mostly relevant for application software. For just playing games, a TV set will be suitable. Beware that not all TVs like the Apple II's video signal and a few HDTVs will completely reject it.

Ordering parts for it has been fun because they're right at that sweet spot where they're old enough to be dirt-cheap, but not so old that they're difficult to find.

Earlier IIes made in 1983-84 retain the brown and white keyboard from the II/II+. The first few months of IIe production in early 1983 had the Revision A motherboard that can't use DHGR mode and it would be very rare to find one of these because Apple swapped them out with the newer Revision B board for free.

In 1985, Apple switched to a light gray keyboard with black letters to reduce costs, also the new design looked more modern. It's not as loud as the old IIe keyboard either.

Hey you're the guy who wanted my wallpaper

I noticed you got OS9 running on that PowerMac G4 MDD. What stuff do you usually do with it? I mostly play games like quake and do some light browsing in classilla on my iMac G3. (but personally I find it easier to browse the web when booted into panther with firefox/camino)
>>
>>56100606
Eh, I have an Voodoo 2 in it to play Quake glide.
OS 9 is more of a gimmick on such a new PowerPC, the machine itself is actually pretty useful even now-a-days with Leopard.
>>
>>56100606
I want to install MorphOS on it but right now it has a Geforce 4MX (MorphOS does not like it), I have an PC AGP Radeon 9800 but I don't have an AGP PC right now to flash a Mac BIOS on it, after I do that I can install MorphOS.
>>
>>56100718
OS 9 compatibility really just broadens what you can do with your box since finding old PPC OS X software can be a bitch, it's not nearly as well-archived.
>>
>>56101296

Good advice. I was super lucky to inherit my //e for free.

Not to mention, the //e is why Apple still exists. It was the /only/ piece of hardware providing Apple consistent income until the mid-90s, and the decision to focus on it was one of the ones that ended up with Steve Jobs being fired.

Very interesting piece of history, the //e.

You might have to use the asciiview command instead of aview, unless your files are already pnm.
>>
>>56101671
Because when they were worth your preferred asking price people were tossing them in landfills by the multi-semi load or selling pallets worth of them for pennies at auctions and you couldn't pay them to take it all away, the 1990s and early 2000s were an excellent time to be into big iron, now it's all been consolidated into private hobbyist collections and the spacious compounds of surplus auction hoarders.

The latter are all starting to die off or otherwise give up on their shit though, you might get lucky if you keep your eyes open and have a decent network.
>>
>>56104136
Oh, thanks.
Asciiview uses aa-lib and can display jpg, gif, png?
Aview only pnm?
>>

That's a fancy way of saying Ebay scalpers think they can rip you off because some piece of hardware was featured on an e-celeb video and it now has hipster "cred".

I also notice on Ebay that nobody actually bids on items with those insane prices. There are very few things worth that kind of money except maybe an Altair 8800 with original 1975 manufacture date ICs in it.
>>
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-Plus-A2S1048-with-two-disc-drives-/142085713866?hash=item2114f7efca:g:T80AAOSwaB5XsHZC

Fair asking price.

Not fair asking price.
>>
TRS-80 Model I/IIIs always sell for stupid high prices even though they're not unusually rare computers and they're generally less useful (in terms of the software library) than the Apple II or whatever.

I'm not in any way attempting to justify scalper rates, but good working examples aren't really easy to come by anymore on the broader market, they were all destroyed, squirreled away or treated like shit.

>I also notice on Ebay that nobody actually bids on items with those insane prices.
Yeah, they pretty much just sit on that shit forever hoping some business, desperate collector or layman who doesn't know any better will take the bait.

Yeah I noticed that too, but my take is that it's because of the absurdly high shipping costs as compared with, like, a C64. These things are _heavy_. Most likely, sellers charge through the nose to make up for the expense of packing them and shipping insurance and all that.
>>
>>56105006
The more watchers an item has, the more bullshit the price is. They're watching it because they want to see if it actually sells, or it means its been on there for a long time.
>>
>>56105033
>I'm not in any way attempting to justify scalper rates, but good working examples aren't really easy to come by anymore on the broader market, they were all destroyed, squirreled away or treated like shit.
Good working examples of a VT-100 terminal? Since that's what was originally mentioned >>56101671
>>
>>56105058
That's more likely. There's plenty of C64s on there selling for $30-$50 and the demand for them is way higher than a TRS-80.
>>
>>56105070
>Good working examples of a VT-100 terminal?
That or any other vintage terminal. I guess it varies a little bit, but Lear Sieglers always seem to bring good money.
>>
>>56105070
Sure, VT-100s especially I could see commanding a price premium for a well-manicured example. They have historical value and are at least somewhat iconic in some circles, and they're not getting any younger.

I'm not sure why Lear Sieglers are popular as well, but they probably also have historic value since they were widely used during the early days of personal computers in the 70s. You can very often find photos of S-100 machines hooked up to these.
>>
>>56105137
I'd probably say the looks of it contribute to it more, that curvy space-age enclosure will definitely appeal to those looking for something that displays well, whereas most terminals pretty much just look like any old monitor and keyboard.
>>

There's at least 30 or more Apple II games that can use a mouse. This is in contrast to the paucity of software that can use the Commodore 1351 mouse.
>>

As you can see from the ad, Apple had a whole line of mouse software that provided a raison-de-etre to have a mouse. Commodore did not, although they did bundle GEOS with the C64C (unfortunately not the C128).

Specs of the left one?
>>
Apple had a whole series of floppy drives for the II and Mac line. These include:

>original Disk II
Works on any Apple II, will require a D-shell adapter on later model machines.
>UniDisk II
Newer half height drive mechanism and 19-pin D-shell connector, otherwise functionally the same as the old Disk II.
>Disk IIc
Same as UniDisk II, but lower profile case designed to match the Apple IIc.
>DuoDisk
Two UniDisk IIs in a single unit. May require a hardware mod to work on the IIgs.
>UniDisk 3.5"
3.5" floppy for the 8-bit Apple II line. Works on the IIgs as well, but slower and may break some software, so not recommended. Not compatible with Macs.
>AppleDisk 3.5"
3.5" floppy for the IIgs, will work on 8-bit machines as well. Not compatible with Liron controllers or the IIc (IIc+ is fine). Will work on any Mac with an external floppy connector, HD20 INIT required for the 128/512.
>Mac 400k 3.5"
Works on any Mac with a DD floppy controller. Not recommended on machines with an HD controller. Can be used on Apple IIs with a Laser UDC, but there is no support for the disk eject.
>Mac 800k 3.5"
Same as above. HD20 INIT required on the Mac 128/512.
>FDHD external
HD Mac floppy drive that can use 1.44MB disks. Not compatible with the Mac 128/512. If used on any other Mac without an HD controller, it will function as an 800k drive. Works on the Apple II if a UDC or other third party controller is used.
>Apple PC 5.25" drive
Designed to read PC 360k floppies. Requires a special NuBus card and not compatible with Macs that have HD floppy support in the ROMs.

The Disk II can never be used with a Mac unless you want magic smoke. Don't do it. Apple II 3.5" drives have a pass through port for daisy-chaining, this should not be used if attached to a Mac.
>>
>>56108923
As far as I recall, the 3.5" drives for the Apple II are "smart" drives with their own CPU while the Mac ones are "dumb" drives.
>>

For that money, I'd rather have a Laser UDC.
>>
I only recall when I was a kid that weirdos had Apple IIs. It was all like "Oh, your parents buy you this thing and you're only allowed to do homework and play Oregon Trail or Cross Country USA on it."
>>
>>56109698
The Liron only works with the UniDisk. It's also what the IIc uses for its onboard floppy controller.

Got the thing home at last, for 130€, would have prefered 100€, but didn't want to let it slip, they ain't that easy to find here.
So it works nicely, first boot was great, fitted 128MB RAM into it, after a while it started doing the sad tone, two of the sockets don't want to work nicely. Also the monitors flyback transformer cable is "leaking" and sparking against the grounding metal.

Still cleaning and trying to figure out how to fix her up.

She was not very tech savvy, but she was more like "eh, if someone wants it, they can buy it, I don't mind it just sitting in the storage" but I managed to get the price down telling her it would bring me joy.

I fixed the memory already with a full cleaning of the motherboard with rubbing alcohol and contract cleaner, the battery had corroded but it has not eaten any traces or contracts, probably just short circuited something on the back of the board that I didn't clean properly at first.

I'm also gonna put a layer of silicon on the flyback transformer cable tomorrow, should fix the monitor.
