Someone offered to hire me to come to their house and set up some computer stuff for them. They want to transfer to a new PC and set the new one up, presumably including software, AV, updates etc.

A laptop I just got was only ever released with Windows 8 on it. However, I want to downgrade to Windows 7 (I like 7 a bit more). How would I go about finding Win7 device drivers for this laptop?

Thanks, but this doesn't help much. I know how to downgrade, but I can't find Win7 native drivers. Your link provides a method of finding drivers for a laptop but only if the manufacturer provides them, which they do not. I should have made that clear.

So to clarify, I'm asking if there's a way I can use drivers for a similar model that does have Win7 support to update the drivers on my laptop. Or if there's another way around this that anyone knows about.

Thanks. Best buy would charge them at least $300, even the small biz place here would ask $200. Knowing that and with your advice I think I'll ask $80. They're not *super* retarded, just old.
>>
>>56072651
Well you would have to hunt down the drivers individually then, at least the essential core drivers. If you know the exact hardware your laptop is going to be running down to the individual devices you can search around for it. If you have access to that model in advance or maybe a display unit you can look in device manager and look it up by number. But some devices just don't have drivers for older versions of windows at all. That's going to be more true as time goes on.

>>
>>56072747
Did you boot windows between the time when you created the new partition and the time when you installed Fedora? Because it sounds like something went wrong during partition creation and you accidentally wiped your Windows boot files. Posting your partition information might give someone here an idea of what went wrong.

You _may_ be able to use some of the W8.1 drivers on W7.
If not, go through Windows Update and see if it can pick anything up.
If it can't go to the website of the manufacturer of each specific component in your laptop, and get drivers from there (e.g. Realtek if they made the sound chip, Intel if they made the NIC, etc.).
>>
>>56073007
Microsoft provides the legit ISOs if you can borrow somebody's non-OEM key. Otherwise you can verify a torrent/download by comparing it's checksum against MSDN. The daz activator and Microsoft toolkits are easily available from their creators at my digital life forums. The real reason not to pirate is that AFAIK there aren't any reliable open source activators so you can never be 100% sure you're malware free. Also, in the case of windows 10 you aren't permanently activated, there's just a program responsible for running constantly and reregistering you for 180 day trials indefinitely. If microsoft ever blocks that, or adds it to defender or changes it's trial system you're screwed.

8 is designed for touch screens and looks like a tablet OS, 8.1 fixed a lot of things but it also has a bloated interface, 7 is more minimalistic out of the box (in a good way) and usually doesn't have crap preinstalled. Also 8/8.1 comes with Windows store, it appears as a combination of 7 and 10. There isn't that much difference once you set up 8.1 properly, so 7 or 8.1 is just a matter of preference. Most people prefer Windows 7 because you don't have to uninstall half the "apps" you get and remove the store. 7 also supports older hardware better and feels slightly faster, but there are some places where 8.1 beats 7. 8.1 is a decent alternative to 7 if you don't want to use cloud-like operating systems (Windows 10).

I haven't used other companies aftermarket fans, but they're much better than any stock fans I've ever used.

Extremely quiet which is obviously their main draw. I feel comfortable recommending them to anyone who's comfortable with spending 35 dollars on a single fan, if you're pinching pennies perhaps they're not worth it, but otherwise yeah i'd say theyre great.

You can also get them in black now if you don't like how they look, personally I like how the beige ones look and it's kinda like a token of prestige, like buying name-brand clothes or something, you want them to be distinct.

That's exactly why I bought mine, my pc is basically silent, the only noise I ever hear from it is when im doing massive reads/writes to my hdd and you can hear the spindle moving about.
However I use custom fan curves so they never spin over 50%, my pc runs slightly hot (up to ~75-80c on a hot day) but that doesn't phase me, pcs can operate comfortably at those temperatures.

>>
>>56075650
Probably not hdds I'm not an expert but i think we're basically at their top speed. SSDs it would be /potentially/ possible though as they increase in speed, the problem is as everything gets faster, data also gets larger since we have the bandwidth to allow it, and storage devices get larger.

So if you're wiping an SSD that is 20x faster than what you have now, but also 20x larger its still going to be roughly the same, but in general, yes it should get faster with time.

Drive writing doesn't get a lot faster. You're still pretty much limited by the speed of the spinning platters. One pass would be a lot better than nothing, but I would still recommend multiple if you're worried. If your manufacturer makes a tool for it that's best.

>>56075684
I read a little while back that SSD's aren't going to get a hell of a lot bigger than they are now. Beyond a certain size they're just not a practical technology and when we start getting to that storage size we'll have to use something else.

neat, i hadn't read that, it makes sense, but I /think/ what I replied to anon would still be roughly the same, I don't think we'd get to a point where we can instantly dump the entire contents of a storage drive, speed seems to be growing pretty linearly with capacity, regardless of the technology.

I've been programming for a couple years now nad just starting to get into network programming, and need a bit of help.

1) I understand the concepts of a client program requesting information from a server program, but when the server responds back to your router, how does that response get back to the program on your computer that requested it, especially when you have multiple computers with multiple programs running on your network?

Your gateway device does what is called NAT. It stores the IP address and port that original requested the page and then when it received a response from the destination address, it forwards it back to the requesting address.
>2) Is it possible to run a client program and server program on the same computer?
Absolutely, that's what localhost is for.

I've got a pair of bog-standard Sennheiser headphones that will probably continue to work for another 3 years or so (HD449s), and I play a few games that require a microphone. At the moment, my laptop's internal mic does the job, but I'm planning on building a pc at the end of the year.

What are my options if I want to get a mic, but want to keep the headphones, without going full retard like some of the streamers and podcasters with wall-mounted mics. They've got a reason for buying them, all I want something for simple VOIP comms.

Greetings.

For fun, I've currently begun writing an app for MAL users on linux using c++ and gtk-3.0. All is good in terms of the front end, but there's one very damning thing that I'm not really sure how to work around.

MAL has an api you can use to query their server. However, most requests to the server require user authentication in the form of adding `-u username:password` to cUrl

While I could ask users for this information once a session (and will certainly give them the option to do this), I would also like to provide the option to have the application save their login data for subsequent uses.

However, I can't think of a single secure way to go about doing this. Hashing is a no go, because the password's plaintext needs to be recovered. Symmetric encryption seems like a bad idea, because then it's back to square one (the encryption key would have to be stored somewhere, too). What options are left, really?

>inb4 trying to stop people from accessing your weeb list

If I intend to ever release the source code for this project and let people use it, I want to make sure that their password is safe, period. Password reuse is a very real problem in the normie world, and a leaked password can mean a lot more damage than a compromised MAL account.

If I have a mainboard with multiple 16x PCIExpress slots but only one GPU, does it matter in which one I put it?

I ask because the cooler I bought for my I7 6800K is so massive it blocks the first 16x PCIExpress slot.

So I just got this shit for free, up to date and all, not rooted. Should I bother installing a different ROM on it or do you think I'll be just fine with stock?
>>
>>56076733

not a programmer but fuck it im bored.

Could you get them to enter their username and password, and then a local password, and have an algorithm that then encrypts their MAL username/pass with the local password as some kind of seed or whatever the fuck. then when they wanna use the app, it enters the local password, decrypts the user/pass, sends it, then doesnt store the MAL user/pass anywhere else?

who knows im probably sounding like a babbling retard, but from the position of a babbling retard thats what i'd try, it sounds like at some point that pw has to become cleartext to be sent, and i dont see how you're going to get around that if thats what the mal api requires.
>>
>>56076866
it doesn't matter, it wouldn't even matter for gaming if you put it in a 4x slot

>>56076870
its only worth it if the default rom is getting in your way somehow or you want the specific features of a custom rom, imo if you cant think of a reason to install a custom rom off the top of your head you dont need to do it, thats how i decide to do it or not, anyway
>>
>>56076889
All right, thanks. Then I'll keep my GPU in the second slot.
>>
>>56076866

>>
>>56076904
it wont matter even if it is, cards dont max out the bandwidth

they use a different processor, not an x86 processor, the instructions sent to a phone processor differ to the instructions sent to a pc processor.

thats a very basic explanation anyway.

Hi /g/, I'm doing some regex shit with 4chan and I'm getting the next issue.

I want to get the NSFW boards, then, I'm using regex like (wg|gif) and [btr] with the negative lookahead characters. My issue is, which when it founds, for example "t" it stops. Then, /tv/ which is a SFW board, is not matched. That happens with every board SFW who shares a letter with a NSFW boards.

How can I say to regex "don't stop at 1st match"?

PS: Sorry for bad english
PS2: I can provide code if needed

any critique welcome
>>
>>56076963
is there any reason why you aren't just using a list of exact nsfw board names? i don't see why regex is needed here
it's not like there's some pattern in the names which hint them as being nsfw
>>
>>56076988
looks good to me mate, i'd pirate windows though but thats just me.
>>
>>56077011
That's the thing, I'm using it, but maybe I'm using it bad. Here's the regex.

^.*(https|http)\:\/\/boards\.4chan\.org\/(?=[fibsheudytr]|ic|wg|r9k|pol|soc|s4s|hc|hm|hr|gif|aco).*$

It is supposed to say:
Match start from end line
https://boards.4chan.org/ or http://boards.4chan.org/
Whatever the board is in the range of [fibsheudytr] or ic, wg, r9k, pol, soc, s4s, hc, hm, hr, gif, aco
Match also whatever after the line (for thread's url)

What am I doing wrong? That's the positive matching.
>>
>>56076873
That's what I'm afraid of, unfortunately. The problem with that is that, ultimately, the convenience is meant to be in being able to automatically log the user in when they start up the app. However, using a local password, as you put it, runs into the same problem - either I have to store that on the computer to do it automatically (which would also have to be secured somehow), or you would need to have the user enter it each time - but then I might as well just scrap the idea of saving anything and do it based on the session.

>>
>>56077055
how does other software do it? there must be a way to just compare a 4 digit pin to a hash or something.

Most people would probably rather enter a small code than their full username/pass... I guess autofill on browsers kinda takes away the inconvenience of entering stuff now-a-days though.

If you're just entering college and don't want to buy another laptop for you ~4 year stay, I wouldn't suggest anything less than $600, probably closer to $800.

If you want a laptop for a few year then might upgrade after that, I would suggest $400-$600.

Don't buy gaming related specs because it will take away from other specs that are actually important for laptops. That said, you shouldn't be gaming on a laptop anyway.

Battery is the single most important and often overlooked spec of a laptop. I wouldn't but a laptop with less than 8 hours of advertised battery.

Best bet, as the others have suggested, is Ubuntu Server 16.04.1 LTS. From there, an FTP (+ web ftp client) set up would probably be best if you're just after files.

When I "close" the search with "/" again, it stop searching if it is a single letter, and don't match it if there's more than one, since it doesn't appear "/".

I don't know if I explained it right, my english is very bad.

Brilliant photo

Anyway, have you checked the advanced power management settings? I think they're the same on all versions of Windows, so you should be able to check easily. Make sure to expand everything.

If that doesn't work, it's probably a wonky setting deeper down. Check any related software that came with your laptop.

Last resort might be checking the BIOS, but this seems unlikely.

Depends what you're into:

General purpose probably something like Python
Software dev Java, Python, maybe C# or C++
Webdev javascript then jquery/sql/maybe php (css and html obviously)

If you already know parts of a language, stick with that one. Never underestimate a book, between that and hands-on experience, it's the best way to learn a language. MOOGs are okay, too, but they do need supplementing with other material.

/g/ I'm at the end of my rope here.

I followed along with the /a/ meme of not using vlc. I installed mpc, I have tried every one of their recomended video encoders. I have tried googling the problem but it's never the same and I've reached the conclusion

It's my graphics card that can not handle playing an mkv without having the audio slowly desync more and more very 6 seconds.

geforce 6150se

I know that its shit, but i dont have the materials to do anything about it right now, I just need to know if theres an actual bottom of the barrel setting because other video file types are playing without any trouble.

Which is "safer," RAID6 or RAID10?

I have a 4-bay NAS with 4x4TB drives. My number one concern is data protection.

From what I've read, RAID6 lets me lose ANY two drives and still be able to rebuild at the cost of slower write speeds. RAID10 lets me lose one drive from each mirror group, but I can theoretically lose all my data if the wrong two drives fail at the same time. The benefit to this is excellent write and read speed.

Seems to me that RAID6 offers a better level of protection since you can lose any two drives, but people online are telling me RAID10 is more safe?

If you used the google contacts app then your gmail will save all your contacts.

If you use a different contacts then you just use an app like CM backup to backup your old contacts to the cloud, sign into your new phone with your gmail account, and install the app and restore contacts.

I wanted to buy a netbook for uni that should last 5 years without getting slow. It need to be 13"-14". I'm doing some writing, viewing documents, surfing, media consumption and a bit programming.
How important is the core? Do I need atleast an i5?
How much ram is enough 4GB or 8GB?
And the display resolution is 1080 a must have or is 1366x768 enough?
I saw some good Ultrabooks like XPS 13 or An Asus Zenbook UX305 or the Hp Envy. But they are a bit pricey. Are they good choices?

I've got a whole THREE stupid questions
- I'm a windows ten fag who just installed Iridium. All of my extensions and everything work fine, but I use Google Docs and such for work, and noticed I can't "sign in to chrome", but I can sign into any google service just fine on the individual pages. Anyone know what's going on?
- Another Iridium issue, videos never play anywhere in my browser. Youtube, facebook, twitter, xvideos, nothing works. I tried reinstalling Java and even adobe flash player but nothing works.
- Iridium is also recording my history in incognito tabs, and it doesn't go away when I clear history. All my porn still shows up when I'm typing shit into the search bar. wtf is going on?
