I always see anti-Android people cite lack of software updates as a problem with Android.

How big of a problem is this for most mainstream phones? Genuine question, most of my experiences are with pre-Lenovo Motorola phones and the Nexus line, with most of my family opting for OnePlus.

If you have any horror stories, post them here I guess.

They usually stop being supported after two years, and whenever a major security vulnerability is unveiled it sometimes takes months before the patches reach the users. Nexus devices on the other hand get patches pretty much the week of the discovery though.

It's mostly marketing. The patches are posted to AOSP and then the manufacturer has to put them in their roms, then they are sent to the carriers for additional bloating.

Not a big problem if you have a mainstream phone and are willing to flash non-stock roms. If you stay on touchjizz or related you deserve security flaws

who the fuck needs updates
Still on ICS and loving it.

>inb4 no custom roms
They exist up to 6.0 for my device, but hey, don't fix what's not broken.

I suppose using other roms would help a lot, hell even the Galaxy S3 still gets nightly CM updates.

I will say though that there is some indication that carriers are heavily involved in updates. I remember when I got Lollipop right away on a Motorola phone no problem, but a friend of mine on Verizon using a similar-era phone never got it, despite Motorola's guarantee that it would.

I always go unlocked.

Just out of curiosity, what phone?

If you're worried about software updates stay away from Verizon. They have always been notorious for locking down phones and taking forever to patch things.
This is why I unlock.
>>
>>56061940
I mainly stay away from them because a lot of unlocked phones aren't CDMA and I've heard some stores don't know what to do when you bring in an unlocked phone.
>>

I originally switched from them to T-Mobile for mostly that reason. I got my Nexus 5 off Amazon and took it to them to get activated but they told me that it wasn't allowed on their network. I still don't really know for sure why but a while ago it was believed it was because Verizon doesn't have control over the OTAs and they don't generally support unlocked bootloaders.

Verizon didn't allow Nexus phones from the original all the way to the 6. Google got pissed at Verizon for wanting to delay updates and add in their own shit, so they went out of their way to make Verizon a non-option. Even the CDMA ones like the 5 only worked on Sprint.

I have a theory that Motorola's production of the 6 and their long ties with Verizon is what ended that whole thing.

Correction: I think you could get the original on Verizon.

I heard that even though they couldn't activate it on their network, the radio was fully compatible with it. Verizon employees just claimed that it wasn't.
