I just bought a 1070, plan on upgrading to a 1080ti/big vega if it isn't shit. The problem is that I don't know what kind of monitor to get now, all I have is a basic 1440p monitor and a 1080p dell ultrasharp. I don't know what combination of 144hz, g-synch, 4k/1440p ultrawide, IPS etc. would be good for this next monitor. Budget is $1200 because that's what a 34" ultrawide with g-sync would cost. Less would be nice though

Nobody responded to me in the password managers thread:

Is 1Password considered good or bad? Should I change all of my passwords and my password manager?

KeePass is free, cross-platform, and saves the pw database locally wherever you want instead of on someone else's server.
>>

Also it'd be a 34" ultrawide (3440x1440) monitor, IPS panel with g-sync and a 100hz refresh rate.

>>56054538
There's like 2 monitors that meet all those requirements, what do you need us for? Surely there's some thread on reddit you can share your wet dream with.

Is data in ANY way recoverable off an SSD after its Trim function has been called through Windows Optimization utility?
My understanding is when you "delete" a file on an SSD, it is still there but has been marked for deletion by a chip in the SSD. In this state the data is easy to recover, but once trim is called, the data is dumped and gone for good no matter the recovery method?

a dirty fix would be to edit your host file (in System32/drivers/etc) to include 188.40.51.20 and redirect it to 000.00.00.00. Then try to get rid of it with AVG (free version, the best free AV out).

How can I wake up a lithium ion battery?

>>56054676
http://security.stackexchange.com/questions/12503/can-wiped-ssd-data-be-recovered

Trim certainly helps, but SSDs often move things around instead of outright deleting them, to save time. It's the weird thing about physical location not mattering like it does on an HDD. If your manufacturer offers a secure erase utility then that has much better odds of wiping the drive effectively. But on a file by file basis it's very difficult to reliably erase.
>>
>>56054731
Avg hasn't been shit in years
>>
>>56054811
Thanks. I have another question that perhaps you can answer.

Everyone says that an SSD can't effectively be nuked to destroy data like an HDD can because of the unique way SSDs operate.
However, If you used a wipe tool like CCleaner that filled the SSD with random data until it was full, and then deleted it, wouldn't the SSD still effecitvley be sanitized? Although the SSD was moving around data and not deleting it, it was still asked to fill itself up to the brim with new data, and therefore it would be absolutely forced to eradicate all the old data?
Doesnt that work? Would the old/sensitive data be adequately overwritten?
>>

It consistently scores in the top 5 on lab driven detection and removal tests.
Its pretty damn good for a free AV.

Recommend me a crazy window manager, please. Stuff like rotating windows, 3d effects, windows that shake and flex like jello, whatever.
>>
>>56054881
The link mentioned doing that twice in a row will usually work but not always. One problem would be that SSDs often have more space than is accessible to the end user, to help prevent slowdown and unnecessary aging on full drives rest of the drive is being overwritten.

Trying to figure out what CPU I should choose when I'll be upgrading/building my next computer.

The Ref CPU I'm using is what my friend bought for his own Computer (4460). My own CPU is an old i5 750 from aeons ago, that I could overclock if I wanted but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. I'm thinking about keeping my current PSU and possibly Ram (if I stay in the 4th generation i5). The 4590 seems like a strong contender. Suggestions?

After a quick google search, it would appear that my PSU is fully compatible (HX1000W, corsair)
It's 80+ but not silver, gold, or what have you.
With that said, would it be a good idea to keep it going forward (knowing it's probably compatible with Skylake as well) or change it? And if I have the choice between Haswel and skylake, at somewhat similar prices, should I go with Skylake (6600) or Haswel (4690) or even go for a cheaper alternative (4590)?

Then CC probably got everything already. The os does expand a lot on the initial round of updates. You can disable system restore, pagefile and hybernation to reclaim some space, also disabling things like IE. You can use a program like windirstat to help track down any specific files that you might not have noticed. But if you're trying to slim your win it really needs to happen before you install.

if you click on 'computer' or 'this pc' or whatever it is called, you see the C: drive. if there is a D: drive or something, that would be your second partition.

>>
>>56056235
>how can i be certain that will remove the malware?

It won't magically sanitize your files, but neither will uploading them to the cloud. What you're really worried about is things that are installed to your windows system, and wiping windows will do that.

I'm currently dual booting with Win 7 and Ubuntu, but I want to switch to Arch on the Ubuntu portion. I installed it on a different computer without any trouble, but looking at the hard drive partitions I already have on this computer I have no fucking clue how I should go about installing it without fucking up Windows

It's really not that big of a deal if I lose Windows since I rarely use it, but I'd prefer to keep it

So everybody here is kind of suggesting the same thing, only with a before and after difference. What you can do is delete as much crap from your system as possible, then go into disk management and shrink your C drive as much as it will let you (but leave some space for windows to grow), then use the empty space to make a new NTFS partition, and you can drop all your files onto that, and move your desktop and my documents location to it. Then every time you wipe windows that partition will still be there.

just finish my undergrad degree and start working. I already have a steel company that will hire me immediately upon graduating. I would start at around 70k. Then with bonuses and raises at the end of two years it would be fairly likely i could end up making 160K+ total for two years before taxes.

In school i would make probably a total of 54K at the end of two years total. Thats a difference of over 100K. With the increased salary a masters could get me it would still take at minimum 5 years to make up that lost salary.

That is only using the company i know i have a job with. I could use their offer to leverage another company into giving me a higher base pay. So really 100K would be the minimum opportunity cost of continuing my education.

1060 is objectively better, more efficient and quieter, especially since im not gonna "upgrade" to win10, so DX12 performance is irrelevant.
But i doubt if i can even use its full potential on a single fullHD monitor
480 is probably not gonna be available for 3 more weeks, but the performance seems to be as close to 470 as their price
Or should i wait for 1050?

for referrence, im currently on A10-5800k, so any of those will be a x10 performance boost, also im one of those faggtos who thinks that 25fps 200ping is perfectly playable

I dont know about metallurgy, but in some sectors you can even do a master/phd as part of doing you rregular job. Or if you find yourself unemployed for some reason later on you can still go back and get your degree while the job market recovers

Yes. Norton DNS, not antivirus. If you have another DNS that focuses on malware filtering you'd like to suggest I'm all ears.

Use a secure erase utility like DBAN or a utility from your drive manufacturer.

I'm thinking of installing linux, for gaming... ironically. Ubuntu should do fine right? Or is debian better? I've been putting off learning linux for far too long and I want to eventually replace windows with it. I'd probably set up a VM for win 7 eventually. I'm not switching to win10. So... debian or ubuntu? I'm p tech savvy desu.
>>
how to format the only hdd i am using that also has my OS on it?
>>
>>56057580
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4k
good enough that the average user wont be able to recover it even with special software
can still be "easily" recovered with an electron microscope or maybe custom drivers and a special drive head.

dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda bs=4k
fills drive with random garbage instead of zeroes, slower but much harder to recover, do 2 passes and its practically impossible

shred is another command that does something similar

windows also has tools that do this

or you could just fill the drive 95% with copies of a single file, delete them all and repeat with another file
>>
Ubuntu. Or better yet mint. And unless your processor has VT-d that VM is gonna be shit for gaming. And most intensive things really. Make sure linux will actually run the things you want.
>>
>>56057650
DBAN
>>
>>56057534
Some games that support DX12 will probably support Vulkan as well, which isn't a Windows 10 exclusive. Console ports will run much better on Vulkan, which will be incorporated into consoles. a 480 is enough for most games at 60fps 1080p, let alone 25fps. You can literally, LITERALLY, get at least 25-30 on any game on 1080 at whatever the highest setting is.

The 1060's best days are already behind it. The 470 is fine for the price as well. I'd skip going out for one night and use the money save to get the 480 desu.

I'm on a 6700k atm.Thing is, I don't want an extremely friendly system. I want something to captivate my attention, to give me a glimpse of its potential, something that can motivate me to learn. If everything just works fine I don't think it'd push me to do much else.

The windows VM wouldn't be for games desu, more like Microsoft Office and other programs related to my studies. The only games I play are a decade or so old, and csgo which is supported by linux anyway. So VM should be just fine right?
>>
>>56056625

>>
>>56057700
Yeah you should be able to get decent efficiency on the VM. And debian will definitely throw you into the fray. You might consider arch though. It's a very customizable distro that doesn't hold your hand. I think whatever you choose it's ultimately going to be more about the projects you undertake.

garbage for third worlders or the very poor (and reckless). Get something better. Toughpower, high end antec, EVGA G2, etc.

Remember that GPUs and CPUs are getting more efficient every year, and that your PSU will last for a minimum of 10 years (under warranty anyway). Get something good and efficient (gold is the minimum, try titanium). It'll recuperate the extra cost in about 2 years, and benefit you afterwards).

The sound port on the front of my computer just broke.
Not because of any inside problem but the port literally broke down inside from wear and tear.
It used to at least give off some sound when you put the cable at an angle but now it's dead.

Yeah don't go that far back, especially with amd. Better to drop to a lower tier with a modern processor. umatrix solves that problem and gives you a lot more control.

you can't.
an SSD is essential. your mate's an idiot or has never used one.

I really want to make it my main OS because of the ricing

Also is there a better audio eq than PulseAudio? Something like DFX?

This is linux, brother. We don't do download buttons here. We do repositories. Think kind of like the android app market but with packages and updates thrown in. What you seek can be found without a browser.

what about audio?
PA is absolute shite
also what about video
I'm using MPC with some fillers and svp on windows
anything similar like that on linux?

I'm trying to set up an eGPU with my gtx 960 now that my desktop has upgraded to the 1060.
Question: do I need a full PSU when I'm just powering the GPU? I don't understand electricity very much. If the GPU benchmarks say it consumes 120W, can I just power the eGPU with a cheaper 200W PSU?

Real stupid question here.

Computer now occasionally crashes and when it tries to reboot it doesn't even get as far as the POST, it just boots for a few seconds and then loops around until I disconnect the power.

What would be the best place to look to fix this?

Update BIOS
Just look up your motherboard model and see if there's a bios update for it.

EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 costs $79.99 which is top-tier. $10 more than the CX which isn't that good.

Alternately, $50.42 for the XFX TS 550w, a JonnyGuru recommended: https://www.amazon.com/XFX-Wired-Bronze-Power-Supply/dp/B004RJ8EKI

Put that on top of the $140 you've saved by removing the 3rd party cooler, paste, a cheaper wifi dongle, and a mid-tower case, you get a total saving of around $160. More than enough to swap the FX with a 6th gen i7.

>>56059578
If you're running 32GB worth of VMs at once on a laptop, you might want to look into Docker or getting another machine just for hosting VMs. Sometimes you can find secondhand datacenter stuff for pretty cheap.

it's the best console

If you're on windows 10 you shouldn't need them.
When you put a BD disc, can you see the contents of the disc on my computer?
Did you try MPC-HC already?
>>
>>56060156
I'm downloading MPC-HC right now.

I run windows 7 64 bit..

I can see the drive in My Computer, but it's not reading any blu ray disk (although it will read and play dvds)
>>
>>56060125
480 if you want newer games.
1060 if you want older games.
>>
>>56060156
>>56060175
on MPC-HC it says "cannot find dvd directory" when trying to play the blu ray..

You think this might be a driver issue?
>>
>>56060175
Bluray disc should appear on my computer even if you couldn't play them.
That model is ancient, maybe its broken?
And, those drives should have 2 lens to read disc, one for dvds/cds and one for blurays.
If you have microfiber cloth try cleaning very gently the lenses.
But, other than that, it sound like the blu ray lens is actually not working.
>>
>>56060193
I'll give that a shot, thanks for all your help.

I knew $34 for a blu ray drive was too good to be true
>>
>>56060209
You can also try to calibrate the lens, that is way more complicated, you need to dissasemble a little the lens and turn a especial screw some degres, but look around google that model, like, "calibrate bd-cmb uj-120" or something.

Hi guys, I want to do something a little complicated.

I want to make an executable where you can just pass a string as an argument, and it will return an image in which this string is rendered in a specific font, size, with a rectangular fill behind it.

I can probably figure out the code if I'm just pointed towards the best tool/language/IDE that will allow me to make such a program quick.

Whether it would make it work on UNIX or Windows, I can probably work with it either way.

Thanks.

You can search for the model over on xda. You can also ask his provider to unlock the phone; sometimes they'll just do it. If he's switching to an MVNO that uses the same towers it might just werk without unlocking.
