Why did the Gnome devs steer away from classic Gnome?
They decided having something that works was too mainstream

Simple. They tried to make it look appealing to average users. They failed miserably.
Because at the time tablets that had touch capability seemed like the future

laptops lol

I don't know but I fail to see the point of the current gnome. You can't have an individual instance of a browser in each desktop. Why not I ask? Even openbox does this. Every distro i've tested out with gnome I've been frustrated with. Used gnome classic for several months and it was fine.

This is always the answer.
That was Gnome 2, which was also criticized for its changes and moving away from classic.

It can be modified, but why the devs think forcing one paradigm is the way to go escapes me.

There's a reason why it's called classic, and it's not just because it's old.

You can and I'm doing so right now
GNOME failed 10x10 goal that is 10% market share by 2010. I don't see why they should have continued doing exactly the same thing that failed.
