There's nothing wrong with Linux per se (except maybe GPU drivers). But as it is now, Linux desktop-oriented distros (including Chrome OS) are not monetizable. The whole market is still captured by Windows. I guess the idea for Google is to make phone and desktop OSes converge, so that Android users will switch to their new OS for PCs, and make money via the Google Store or other evil things Google has in back of their head.

No, not really. People won't use it (let alone it buy it) unless they're forced to. Windows didn't get so widespread for its qualities or because standalone versions sold billions. It's because it was on every PC, and the hot thing to buy at the time was a PC. Thus, Windows became inescapable. Replace "Windows" with "Android" and "PC" with "smartphones", and you'll get the analogy.
If the next hot thing is PC / smartphone hybrid, like Microsoft tries to do with the Continuum dock, then the next Google OS is most likely to be Google's answer for this kind of hardware (while keeping compatibility with Android). They'll try to force it down on most vendors, like they did with smartphones. Chrome OS will never get the same traction because the PC market is locked down.
