I want to get a 144hz 1440p monitor, so GPU prob? My i7 will be fine in regards to games for a few years right? Also should I just wait for the GTX 1180?

Buy the gtx 1070, the 970 is outdated. Same for your processor and RAM. Most applications in 2017 will need a minimum of 4 gigs of DDR4, DDR3 will not cut it.
