Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What's with the Debian shills? Debian really is outdated and offers very little compared to other distros.

Please please help me. My Desktop running fedora recently just had a power issue (my household had a black out) now when I boot into fedora it just shows the terminal. Doesn't matter what kernel it boots from its always booting ti terminal.

Please help
>>
>>56022332
I've been wondering this too. I've never used it so I can't really claim to have a problem with it but I fail to see why it's so beloved compared to the other distributions. I can't comprehend wanting to use outdated kernel packages.

If they specified that they were shilling Testing or Sid I'd be alright with it.

And this last part is just me being autistic, but why the fuck do they name their distribution after toy story characters? It really pisses me off.

What do the rolling release versions of Debian have over other rolling release distributions, though?
>>
>>56022346
Try reinstalling your desktop environment (or better, install KDE regardless of which one you were using).

You may also need to reinstall your display manager. Then it's just a simple matter of executing startx.
>>
>>56022379
No idea. Brand identity, I guess.

Maybe better support? Debian is more popular than Gentoo or Arch.
>>
>>56022346
Any additional info beyond "it boots to the terminal"? Does it get past the boot loader? What does the terminal show? Can you enter commands and view your files?

>>56022346

Because it's the most popular and reliable distro (probably thanks to Ubuntu), minus all the Ubuntu bloat, and plus the care for muh freedom.

Yeah, I guess. I'm just trying to figure out the advantages of Debian over something else. If it really is superior I want to know why so I can consider using it.

>>
>>56022507
Ahhhh.

You might need to reinstall. I'll freely admit I've never dealt with this particular issue before. Google is your friend.

You could boot into a liveCD and chroot into your system and try to repair it from there. Reinstall some packages, run an update, execute dnf clear all. It's possible your install simply got fucked but I can't really imagine why that would happen.

Rolling-release/bleeding-edge distros are constantly changing from the upstream, so they're inevitably going to be unstable, and users are more likely to experience bugs.

Most of these distros have a short testing period (or "cooling time") to make sure things aren't completely broken before being released to the primary users. For example, Debian has an "experimental" section for these sorts of things (pic related), so that Unstable/Sid users don't have to be concerned with crazy huge issues.

You may want to consider a different distribution. Or it's possible there's something wrong with your computer, but I'd recommend you try, say, Kubuntu or Korora on for size and see how those work out for you.

Might I ask why you had to reinstall the last two times?

How is KDE compared to GNOME? I've been watching YouTube videos about desktop environments - one said that it was too slow for him compared to KDE, and the other said that the majority of users use GNOME...
>>
>>56026659
Compared in what case? They are different in design (KDE is more like Windows and GNOME more like Apples OS.)
KDE uses Qt while Gnome uses GTK. To lazy to type it out, so I'll c+p:
GTK and Qt are user interface toolkits and frameworks. They are libraries that the developers use to design graphical interfaces.
When a graphical (GUI) program is written, first its core internals are developed. This is what makes the program run. You never see the core, they simply execute in the background. On top of this core, a User Interface (UI) is designed.
Now, the developers could design the complete interface from scratch, or re-use designs made by others. Re-using design has a major advantage. It allows all the programs in your computer to look similar. Hence, they use GUI toolkits. GTK and Qt are two extremely common GUI toolkits.
GTK is the standard toolkit for GNOME while Qt is used by KDE. From the user's point of view, it's just the looks that differ. The program remains the same at heart.

Gentoo is basically the highest level since it allows you to customize everything at compile time. At the end of the day you have an operating system that does 100% exactly what you need.
"Install Gentoo" is /g/'s way to say "Lurk moar." Newfriends consider Gentoo is a meme, because compiling may take a while (only for huge programs tho). Also the word "compiling" scares some people, but IRL everything is done automatic using Gentoo's package manager portage.

Everyone has different taste. Try them both out yourself. I like the polish and consistency of GNOME 3 compared to the KDE5. I think aesthetically KDE is fucking garbage out of the box. One ridiculous example of this is how the clock on the taskbar scales with the task bar. So many design issues, but I think it's easier to rice KDE.

HALP PLOX!

Installing Linux (Mint to be specific) for the first time. I have Windows 7 and I've shrunk Win7 partition to half (there's now 1TB of NTFS and 1TB of Free space) on my 2TB HDD.

I've booted Mint and I'm starting the installation and I have an option of "install Mint alongside Win7" or "Something Else".

This is what Somethign Else looks like.

Should I choose the first option or Something Else option? Something Else option requires me to format free space and set Swap.

Some help is really appreciated /g/ents!

>>
>>56027283
Seeing as you don't boot UEFI you can just make one giant EXT4 partition of the extra space. If you want to be able to hibernate, you can make a swap partition equal to the amount of RAM you have. Or make a swap file using Google later. Or use gparted to shrink the EXT4 part and make a swap part.
>>
>>56027283
If you want to dual boot mint and 7, then install alongside. Which I assume you want to do since you repartitioned space for mint.
>>
>>56027283
Before you proceed, consider installing a distro which isn't broken and doesn't come with lots of security problems.

>>
>>56027401
make it primary not logical, one big ext4. Honestly if you have 4 gig's of mem or more, you don't need swap. swap is for grils anyway.
>>
>>56027401
If you do have UEFI, then make a 200 MB large partition as EFI, and mount point /boot or /boot/efi (not sure what Mint uses as bootloader). The large EXT4 partition has mount point /, just /.

But I agree, install alongside option will make be a nice and easy option.

No. Except you have to fix something that broke.

Honestly as someone who only recently began to use vim I completely understand this perception.

That being said you are missing out. Nothing is comfier than vim. You only get faster and faster (within two days I was already more productive than I was with a standard workflow editor) and you never have to reach for a mouse. I set my input style to vi keybindings and started using vimfx extension for firefox.

Try vimtutor (should be installed by default on most distros). It only takes a few minutes to get the hang of the basics and I am confident that you will see the benefits of the structure quickly.

I tried going back to my old Ubuntu Mate partition and couldn't stand having to use the mouse again.

Tl;dr
There is a reason many many applications allow for vi keybindings - COMFY and productive (eventually, but it doesn't take too long to achieve competency)

I've always used the "advanced" setting because I want to be absolutely sure that my partitions and files are kept intact and in a way that I want.

It really isn't complicated to deal with partitions once you mess with them a little bit, and learn a few terms. All you need is
- a primary drive for your Linux installation (I always go with ext4 since it seems most standard),
- an optional bit of swap
- optional mount points for the other partitions you may want access to
>>
>>56028437
I had to learn how to use the advanced/manual setup so I could use have my /home /var and /swap encrypted. It's slightly confusing at first until you figure out the diffrence between logical vs. primary
>>

Funnily enough, you can do exactly this in Emacs with Evil-mode. I like to think of Vim as a method or control scheme rather than just an editor. I hope more vim implementations in other editors become a regular thing, and I hope they become as robust as Evil-mode.

Linus writes beautiful code. He has published some side projects that he wrote all on his own and the code is just wonderful. He also lives in the real world while still maintaining his open source ideals and supporting himself through his work.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.
>>
>>56028543
>Richard doesn't like Linus because Linus is more of a business man. He likes making money rather than making free software.
Not correct, RMS doesn't like Linus views on freedom, he's doesn't care about if he makes money or not, since for RMS making money isn't a bad thing (he even supports selling free software).

They don't hate each other, they are simply different persons. Linus develops the kernel and doesn't care much about freedom, he just likes the idea of Open Source "I just want source code back.", while RMS fighting for user's freedom. The only debate Linus and RMS have is about the GPLv3, where Linus thinks it's okay to allow locking linux systems down, while RMS thinks users should have the freedom to use their system as they wish. The whole hate which is going on is just the community.

More of an ad hominem on RMS than an actual explanation of anything. I think it's more accurate to say that:

Linus and RMS don't get along because RMS is very picky about "free vs open source" and the whole GNU/Linux thing. Also Linus wasn't a fan of GPL3. There's probably more than just that. Come to think of it, they're both just really opinionated and divisive figures.

I'm having trouble with "wget". It prints many info, but I only want it to report that a file was downloaded. So, I piped "grep" to print only "100%" out of wget, and this way get the screen cleaner. But, this is not enough for me, as each "100%" is printed on a new line, and this gives me a flood of new lines. Is it possible to pipe "tr" to turn the line breaks of the "grep" into spaces, and still be live? When I add tr, the "100%" are all printed at the same time at the end, and I need them live.

Just for further use in linux and bsd there is this wonderfull documentation system called manpages where belive it or not you can find information and maybe even solve a problem. Neat right?

wget -q <url> && printf '.'
wget -q <url> && printf '.'
wget -q <url> && printf '.'

It's a very obscure turn of phrase. Think of something science-y, with a random character(s) sprinkled in. I didn't intend for it not to show up on any encyclopedia/dictionary lists, but it dosen't for some reason.
>>
>>56029108

>>56029084
EXIT STATUS is for when wget finishes downloading every file. I would need STATII for each file.
>>
>>56029107
It's not possible now, as I send the URLs through a txt file. So, are you suggesting me to read one line each time, on a loop?
>>
>>56029134
Just use -nv like everyone else.
How is it useful to know 100% if you don't know the file.
>>
>>56029127
In formal English, you usually put "yet' immediately after not, but in conversation and less formal writing, you normally put it at the end of a clause
>>
>>56029134
you could pipe it to xargs?
grep foo | xargs
or something like grep foo | awk '{print}' ORS=' '
>>
>>56029161
>So, are you suggesting me to read one line each time, on a loop?
Didn't know you're using -r, but line by line is actually a good idea.

while read line; do
wget -q "$line" && printf '+' || printf '-'
done < urls.txt

Untested tho.
>>
>>56029019
If you would like to read the quote chain, you will see he belives a firewall is all that he needs to protect his system, and that encryption is pointless and just wastes time.
>>
>>56029195
I'm not using -r for recursive, I'm using -i for input-file.
>>
>>56029207
Well its reasonably safe assumption isnt it? How often do you get hacked even on windows let alone on linux which is more secure

The money comes from being an active developer (fixing bugs, adding features, etc.) and by providing support for the product.

You can't just fork any FOSS project, relabel it, sell it, and expect people to suddenly flock to your version when the original still exists, has active developers, and gives support to users when needed.

The GPL isn't about making money (even though you can obviously make money in a variety of ways), it's about ensuring what should be inherent rights: the "4 freedoms" laid out by St IGNUcius.

Try piping it to xargs if it doesnt work consider using python, pearl, ruby it might be simpler, just get output of wget put it into list and print inline

It's not all about hacking. For instance; it would borderline retarded to have a laptop, and not encrypt your drives.
>>
>>56029195
I tested here. It should give me N "100%", and it's giving me N "+"...

Thanks for the help, it already is an advance; but I will need to do something more, as it's returning success even if the file isn't downloaded: I use -nc for no cobbler (do not download the same files again and again). So there is success in not downloading on purpose.

Also, it's giving me almost N "-" at the end of "+".
>>
>>56029358
Why? Laptop is one more pricey things you carry around, i certainly dont leave it laying around... Might as well throw money at people

Piping both solutions resulted in no output on the screen.
>>

Same problem as: >>56029134
>>
>>56029163
-nv is too verbose. The file names are irrelevant, and it floods the screen with new lines. I only need to show the files are being downloaded, nothing more.

Well in case you are mugged worse problem is actual theft, fact that mugger can access you favourite anime hardly matters? Tho i agree that in this case encryption might be useful besides unless you are living in some shithole chances are you wont be mugged

Why you suggested using dev/null? -q would be sufficient.

I just booted up my crunchbang partition and I can't log in. When I put in all of my credentials, it just tells me that the login command failed to execute. All I find are things for people who just installed crunchbang saying that they needed to create a home directory for their user in the recovery mode.

Does anyone know what's up? It was working just fine for the past two years or so.

Hello /fglt/. I was wondering if there was a fix for this.

Basically, in the pic, every time I move the terminal it leaves a trail behind (I have a shadow effect behind the terminal). This also happens frequently when I move other windows around; they leave a trail behind but only for a very short amount of time.

Is there a way to fix this/a workaround? It disappears after a while but it's very annoying to look at since I frequently drag windows. I am using KDE and Openbox WM.

Basically, he was doing a speech for some people in Brazil. He offered the choice of doing the speech in English or Spanish, they picked English. Sadly, they were overconfident on their English knowledge and didn't understand much, so they asked him to change to Spanish during the middle of the speech. When he learned of this fact, he had a breakdown because a few people understood what he said, that he couldn't change it during the middle because people wouldn't understand his ideas and concepts, as you can see in the video.

For changing the license, it legally requires the explicit acceptation of every single contributor.
Some of them have changed email address, or have used pseudo. Some of them may be dead.
And if one of them rejects the change, then it can't happens.
