IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

well by puting the size at 13" you cut out the thin and light series of thinkpads.
also pretty much no thinkpad will have an hdmi port, so I'd suggest just getting a displayport to hdmi adapter.
I'd say get an x220, and no you don't need a bit screen for programming

Guys, I'm scare.
Been installing Win 10 from a USB drive over my existing installation on my T530. All was going well till now. It has been on the 'preparing' screen (Just the logo and the text 'Preparing' along with the loading animation) for quite some time, half an hour. Is this normal?
>>
>>56002744
hard drive?
is it showing a lot of load?
also how much ram?
when windows updates it tends to use a lot of ram, so it wouldn't surprise me if you had only 4 gigs of ram and it was swapping, and that's why it's taking so long
>>
>>56002772
Yep, a hard drive. 8 gigs of ram though. I can't tell if it's under load, it does the regular hard drive sounds though so I'd assume it's clicking away.
>>
>>56002170
new update i want to kill myself. the hinge to the lid broke along with the taps inside to lid meaning i need a new hinge plus lid,and probably a new motherboard since it does not give power to fan meaning fan error

Also, after it restarted the first time it booted to the menu I saw at first, so I removed the usb and restored the default boot order. Did that maybe fuck things up?

Hey, as I was writing this it advanced to the next stage! Neat! I'm very happy. Before this I had photoshop and ms office, but those were from the previous owner and I felt I couldn't trust an old install. Now though, this is good.
I've got to get an ssd though, this hdd is so damn slow.

you shouldn't need to mess with the hinge at all to remove the heatsink
>>
>>56002870
Eh, I like it. There are pros and cons for both sides of the argument. I just feel that the pros outweigh the cons for me personally.
>>
>>56002869
generally what you want to do is have the hard drive being the primary boot device, and then you boot into the USB drive one time using f12.
I'd say restart the installation, make your bios set to uefi only, but otherwise default settings, install windows by hitting f12 and then don't touch the computer until you are at the "get going fast" screen
>>56002870
better than windows 7 on a modern system
>>
>>56002872
I was disassembling the keyboard bezel took the screws out on the top part and was about to close it to take apart the one screw on the battery area, and then noticed that the lid was sticking out when I closed it. I though the lid was made of zinc/or some metal.... The ring taps came the fuck off my guess that what killed the hinge.
>>
>>56002918
It seems to be working fine for me now, I'm downloading speccy and . When do I hit F12, in the bios menu? How can one tell if the installation went well?
>>
>>56002989
you hit f12 after you set the boot settings and when you are at the post screen (where you'd hit f1 to go into the bios)
>>

seems ok for canadian prices if it's 1600x900 and nvs (i think all 1600x900 should have nvs)

Not really unless you have less than 4GB RAM or single channel.

For a couple of months now my T410 has been having this small problem that on about every fifth boot, it hangs at an arbitrary point when Linux is booting up. Force-shutting it down and rebooting always fixes it. Any idea what that could be about?

Also, the same laptop's battery never charges above about 60 % anymore according to the battery monitor of my desktop. I've never had a laptop, could that just be the battery getting old, or something else?
>>
>>56006329
sounds like someone used lenovo power manager to set it to the "battery quality saving" type mode.
install windows 7 and lenovo power manager and set it to be normal/the battery saving thing a few times then reboot into linux and see if that fixes it.

Which distro are you running? You should check your system logs logs if xorg-video-Intel DDX driver is causing crashes. Some have had to replace it with the generic xorg-video-modesetting driver to make their systems stable. For more info:

Hey /pham/alamadingdongs
Currently deciding on college laptop, ME bachelors EE masters but hopefully within four years I won't be such a poor negroid

Here's what I've narrowed options down to - any input/advice is highly appreciated.
Thinkpad Carbon X1 w/
I5 6200U
Intel HD 520
8GB 1866
128gb SSD

Thinkpad X260 w/
I5 6200U
Intel HD 520
8GB 2133
256gb SSD

Any Dell XPS 13 was leaning towards touch
Or an I5 surface pro 256gb SSD

With the Dell and XPS I can't change any hardware. Those motherfuckers want $200 for 4gb of ram, $500 for 512gb SSD space. Fuck that noise yo.
But seriously, X260 was my first choice but a friend said the trackpad probably sucks dick if its anything like the X240-250 before it. I'm not too well versed in those, so please help me out. Here is a qt 3.14 for your time.
>>
>>56012317

Sorry about shitty formatting, spambot tried to kill my ass for like 5 minutes. That's an I5 surface pro 4 for anybody wondering, and I can provide links if needed assuming the chan won't troll me again.

You're going to want a docking station, desktop peripherals, and a big external monitor for serious work, so budget for that.

Dumb question: It seems like my x230 with an i5 has turbo boost enabled - how much does it affect battery life and should I keep it on?
>>
>>56012498

Already accounted for which is why I honestly didn't give too much of a shit about the trackpad mention.

Thanks to the rest of you all except the fugging Dr. Bepper memers you /a/ little fucks

Anymore input still appreciated.
>>
>>56012613
Measure the difference when turbo boost kicks in with hwmonitor to get an idea.

It depends, if you disable turbo boost you'll get cooler temps but decreased performance in intensive tasks so if you're only browsing/shitposting 99% of the time i don't think it's going to be noticeable.
>>
Has someone made an open source driver for the T420 already?

>>56012613
Only the last question is a dumb one. How much it affects your battery life depends on how much you use your processor. It's only enabled now, doesn't mean it will actually use it all.
>>

Found an ad on Kijiji for a T420, $225. Its at a strip mall, and when I walked in it was like they went out of business or are trying to kickstart something idk.

They told me to come back in a few hours so they can get it set up. From a dodgy 3rd party.

If you care about privacy you'll have to use an official bios by Lenovo with a whitelist. If you don't care, use one made by le BIOS editing euro man and hope for the best. Or, make a custom one yourself from Lenovo's official BIOS if you want to be certain.
>>
>>56003851
It's one of the steps downhill that Lenovo gave us, just the last one before the final writing was made
Why it's shit compared the T60 and other older models?
>shit media oriented 16:9 screen
>awful viewing angles, contrast, gamut and no good option at all, much less IPS
>awful resolutions with only a barely acceptable option
>shit Xbox hueg bezels
>much less indicator lights compared to older models
>keyboard with more flex in the sake of minimal weight reduction
>much less dock options
>no magnesium lid
And you still get all the traditional Thinkpad problems, the only benefit you get is the modern CPU and chipset, though you still don't get USB 3.0
The T60 is the epitome of the Thinkpad line, with the 700C being quite close
Though if you want something with a chipset that isn't as limited as the *60 series then the closest is the T61, or a T601F if you're into modding
>>
>>56020984
>and why would you want to change out the wireless card in a x260?

The X260 I order with the Intel 8260. Still not well supported by Linux drivers. Completely unsupported by *BSD drivers. I want to drop down to a 7260 with the upcoming FreeBSD 11 and iwn driver. Failing that, something with ath5k or ath9k.

I ordered 15 soft rim trackpoints so that I can replace the clits on all of my thinkpads that still have stock. I also ordered drive bays, RAM, and CF to IDE adapters for my t42, x40, and t30.

The x40 has perfect build quality, I like it even better than my x60, even though they are similar. The x62 is very tempting right now though.

Why are you using an Arabic keyboard?

Get an x200 and Libreboot it.

MS seems to be lenient with activation with Windows 10. They don't care about you cracking the activation, because they still get all of the telemetry from you, which is worth much more than a one time $110 fee. Instead of paying to use malware you are using it for free.

I ordered one of these for my x40.

Coreboot is what speeds it up. I know Libreboot on my x200 made the BIOS take much less time, because it has GRUB directly on the BIOS chip, and it does not load any lenovo things.

Yes, it has a 2GB Nvidia quadro. I'm hoping for a big upgrade from my old W510

cool, any chance you own gta 5, or could tell me how well it runs?
that's pretty much the only game I play nowadays, and I'd like to be able to get solid 60 fps at all times when im on the go.

Haha nah bro, but if I did I would tell you. I got the computer for school and Im just gonna use it for Matlab/AutoCAD/Solidworks, I just didn't want to have to get a new computer for a long time. If it's any use, GTA San Andreas ran great on the W510 and so did AutoCAD and revit although the cad software was a little laggy if the model was complex

Are there any known issues with the fans getting too loud at times? My last two laptops have had that issue even though I don't do anything too intensive on them. I'd like something that can stay quiet if possible, or at least, not as loud as a 747 taking off. I'm considering buying a T420.
>>
>>56021579
t420 doesn't get that loud under full load
unless you are in a dead silent room and running stress tests it shouldn't be loud enough to bother you
>>
>>56021742
That's pretty much what I want. Thank you.

What is your opinion on the Latitude e5450? I can get one new for 494 euros with in my opinion nice specs. i5, nVidia 830m, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 1080p screen.

Should I?

seems pretty good for europoor prices
my friend had an e6430, and my mom had an e6510, and then an e6530 and they where amazing machines.
the keyboard nipple isn't as good as the thinkpads though, but it's good enough, and the trackpad on the e6430 was amazing for a windows device

I know of a couple elementary schools handing this one out to their kids though. It seems to work great.

Has anybody managed to sucessfully run ivy CPUs appart from the ones mentioned in the coreboot wiki? Like the i7-3540m?

should I just take these stickers off and add it to my small collection?
assuming that I can find the rest of them.
>>56022860
any ivy bridge cpu should work fine as long as you have the cooling and power (and bios, but coreboot should have you on that).
question though.
Is coreboot the only option to get an ivy bridge cpu in a t420?
can I run windows in proper uefi mode through it? and is it as barren as this screenshot makes it seem? http://i.imgur.com/B2jLIeq.jpg

more like "you are doing QA work for free" because MS has no QA staff anymore.
(yeah, even Home and Pro users, although Pro editions can be set to receive updates only when they were tested by 10 Home users)

I run AntiX on a thinkpad G40 to this day. Heavy websites make it chug but it's still semi functional for shitposting. Before it died I used Lubuntu on a T42 which has a Pentium M. Both distros ran okay.
>>
>>56017503
$220 on T420
$90+tax on SSD+Ram wombocombo local frys
$10+tax on thermal paste via Amazon and WA tax
$20 on caddy

Fresh 10 into fresh 7 then possibly upgrading to 10 again cause my emulators didn't work.

$340+ taxes on some stuff.

I use it to shitpost and watch animu at work when we're slow.

I should of gotten a tablet

Anyone here have a T601 Frankenpad? I'm really thinking about making one. Would appreciate pics, tips, any additional info, though I've done most of my homework.

Yarp... sucks. I think the cheapest X220 I saw here in Denmark went for 150USD or so... most are 225USD and up.

I've got two genuine Panasonic 9cells. One came with my T60 that was my first Thinkpad and the base of the build, the other came with the T60p that I sourced my UXGA panel from. Despite the T60's battery having about 400 more cycles than the T60p's, they both get around the same battery life of 4-5 hours. From what I've heard, Panasonic cells are exceptionally durable. If you get Sanyo or whatever the third manufacturer is, you probably won't get such good results.

Is there a way to disable the touchpad when using the trackpoint in linux? I don't want to completely disable it just when im using the trackpoint and maybe a second delay before turning back on when im done with the trackpoint
>>
Just bought a T440p from ebay for £300 and waiting for it to arrive. Did I do good /g/?
>>
I'm looking for a thinkpad for my parents as a media player for their TV so they can watch 1080p movies. Would the X201 be fast enough? I have the T420s and that one would definitely work but it's maybe a bit too expensive for just a media player.
Any other models that would do the job?
