It's only a matter of time before we won't have a choice but to have at least a few Internet-of-things electronics/appliances in our homes.

I don't like IoT because most of it seems like a solution looking for a problem, but more importantly, the security on these things tends to be bad.

So, is there any chance of having some sort of basic standard, or will companies keep pumping out insecure shit?
>>
>wont have a choice
your choice is to keep freedom of choice or not. choose wisely

You could use a separate dummy WiFi so they can't get hacked. Or just mod them and add good ol' switches.

No. Companies are retarded. They won't even comply with government-mandated security standards in many cases, often out of laziness or a lack of understanding. They leave maintenance backdoors in production products despite a thousand past cases of that going badly. Companies don't always learn from the mistakes of other companies. Look at security breaches of various products over the last several years and you'll see that it doesn't really get much better with time. And with emerging technologies it's a nightmare.

The best security is your own. If you have an insecure device, use your router to segregate your network so it can't touch your other shit. If possible, make your own device that does the same thing, and it will probably be more secure than something you buy off the shelf. IoT is the goddamn home network security apocalypse.

For household things it's typically really easy to replace ie a "smart "thermostat with a "dumb" one.

The real issue for me is smartphones.
People are starting to assume everyone has one.

Your privacy is gone anyway, every website you visit can run arbitrary code on your machine, almost every email you send is unencrypted and passing though google's or microsoft's servers, everything you type and download is logged by windows for "improving your experience" etc.

The only winning move is not to play desu.

Yeah, unfortunately Windows isn't safe, Android probably isn't safe, and with the introduction of the SystemD master control process from government-contractor Red Hat, even most distros of Linux are possibly no longer safe. It's gotten to the point where you have to really scrutinize every little piece of technology you use and weigh the benefits against the potential for surveillance or compromisation.

Of course there are things you can do. You can use Linux distros that don't contain SystemD, or use a BSD system. You can use a flip phone instead of a smartphone. You can use an encrypted email service, or encrypt your communications with gpg. Protecting yourself costs effort and convenience in a world of conveniences that are designed to be broken.

JS is *mostly* safe and possible to disable without major functionality loss.
There are encrypted email services.
Using windows in >2016 is retarded.
>>55998505
Devuan is easy to use and install.
Flip phones are equally botnet, both have a baseband (botnet) chip. Use a cheap chink phone for WiFi hotspot with hidden ESSID + MAC whitelist and browse with chink/bad IMEI phone without SIM and gapps with disabled/destroyed baseband (botnet) chip.

is windows running on virtualbox safe?
>>
>>55998050
Just keep them off your network. Problem solved.
>>
make everything run on your wifi or ethernet, put ddwrt on the router and log all events, monitor for a month and verify nothing fishy is being done, you can also get lists of 'bad' hosts or compile them yourself, and DROP them on the router's firewall
>>
>>55998289
Wrong. The only winning move is to install Gentoo.

>>55998699
Only if you use Linux as host and disable network support.

>>55998725
>you can also get lists of 'bad' hosts or compile them yourself
Wouldn't it be better and easier to just block all connections not originating from within your network?

Don't forget your ISP potentially doing deep packet inspection on your connection and selling the information to advertisers. Relevant thread: >>55998680

Moron.
