If you don't know if you can program stats stuff with it, you shouldn't be asking. That's what stats packages are for.

you can write to a csv file, scrape data, what more do you need?
Finance fag here. Pretty much R and any scripting language to use that data is required for Finance graduates these days if they want a good analyst position. Python is the most popular, but Lua is slowly popping up. I personally use Lua.
I thought all statisticians and economists used R these days. It's free and has built-in visualization, and it can even handle large datasets.
