it really depends on what you're doing and what your needs are. if you only need a chromebook (in other words, if you reliably have access to wifi, which isn't that crazy a prerequisite but it's not a given for everyone), then a chromebook might be better for you.

For most people I'd say they are. I use a chromebook for my work as an undergraduate (inc. programming), with Ubuntu alongside ChromeOS I can do pretty much anything I need to, all with a machine (Acer C720) a quarter of the price of a MacBook, excellent battery life, good keyboard and touchpad.

most chromebooks are very cheap low end devices, while pretty much every macbook is a high end and high quality machine.
The lowest tier macbook is the air, and it blows pretty much every chromebook out of the water

for the photography applications (probably lightroom and photoshop) and the gaming, you would need a MBP. even then a MBP wouldn't be well-suited to gaming, but it'd be less painful than trying to run anything on a chromebook.
