You make it do things like actually connect to wifi, or print things consistently. If you can prove that there is money to be made, some one will try.

Now, closed source Android projects are where the money is
90% of users just want a browser, a media player, an office suite, and for the OS to not crash.
Linux does that, and it's free, ethical, runs well on super old hardware, and doesn't have nearly as many security problems as windows.
For those of us that are more technologically inclined, linux is the most widely supported OS that lets you alter litterally anything you want.
