IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I started a new job today and almost creamed my pants as they gave me a T540p, together with a Lenovo keyboard and mouse.

I am even more excited as my T430 is being delivered tomorrow and I was getting second thoughts about the chiclet keyboards after reading so many negative opinions on them, but I found it very comfortable to type in. I'm even more excited about it now, can't wait to give my T61 some rest.

Also, can't believe I finally started a /tpg/ thread, this day can't stop getting awesomer!

Going to receive my i5 x220 tomorrow. I hope I wont be posting in "memes you fell for" threads soon after. I'm pretty hyped about being able to receive my shitty 2in1 celeron windows tablet with a capable mobile linux machine that I can actually use for development after work.

I have a FHD E540 with i7 and 12gb ram for work, so I will probably notice a difference, but it will be leagues better than the shitty windows hybrid I have now

I'm this guy, and I've been thinking. Do you think an ssd will fix this issue of very long boot times, or is there some other problem perhaps? Only thing I can think of is that the CPU is throttling due to heat, but I plan on repasting anyway.

>>55983313
Thanks man. Dumb question but I want to be sure.
>>
>>55983068
...yes
pretty much every laptop that uses a hard drive (except for some older ultra portables) will use a 2.5" drive if it has a hard drive.
>>55983114
honestly as long as you have a decent hard drive or an ssd you probably won't notice much of a difference unless you do some really 3d intensive stuff
>>
>>55983384
>honestly as long as you have a decent hard drive or an ssd you probably won't notice much of a difference unless you do some really 3d intensive stuff

Sounds almost too good to be true. This will be great. I won't be needing 3d at all, just enough horsepower to drive an IDE and some servers, something my current "sofa laptop" is really struggling with.

I'm hyped about the keyboard and unsure if I can cope with the 1366* display.
>>
>>55983384
>unless you do some really 3d intensive stuff
I always wonder why no one here every mentions compiling. Compiling is very cpu intensive and there must be programmers on /g/ right?
>>
>>55983705
unless you have a REALLY bad computer, or you are programming so fucking huge application compiling shouldn't take longer than a few seconds.
and cpu performance is probably the least noticeable difference between the x220 and the e450 (assuming that it's also a dualcore + ht)
sandy bridge to broadwell is about a 20% difference at best.
so going from 5 seconds to compile to 6 seconds won't really be that noticeable unless you directly compare them.
also at that point hard drive will be your bottle neck, even if it's an ssd
>>
>>55983766
>unless you have a REALLY bad computer, or you are programming so fucking huge application compiling shouldn't take longer than a few seconds.
lel you've never tried android development then. A clean build of Clover takes about 60s on my i7 4790. It was way worse before, like 2-3 minutes on an older cpu.
Or just shit like compiling ffmpeg or other big programs takes up a lot of time too, and a faster cpu definitely helps.

2 questions, the TPFanControl wiki mentions the "disengaged" mode as possibly dangerous, I find it's the only way to keep my memepad under 85 even when gaming, obviously it's preferrable to replace a fan than a computer but wondering how much truth there is to that statement.

The other is, is it normal for there to be such a difference in temps from one core to the other? I figure being in such a tight space the temp would be the same accross the entire die, or maybe I reapplied thermal paste wrong.

Any cooling tips you can think of? Like putting the computer on coins like stands.

>>
>>55983838
Not that anon, but isn't that a little too much? Why do you figure the compile times are so long? I can't imagine Clover being too big. I've never developed for android, only x86 really
>>
>>55984453
Android uses gradle, and it's just really fucking slow. They're working on it so it's getting better. Before instant run and incremental compiling you had to basically recompile the whole project each run. Clover is not a special with the compile times.

Can the 1366* screen in a e540 be upgraded to the fhd version? They are both available for this model, but perhaps I'm too naive?
>>
>>55985889
Don't get an E version, you'll regret it.
Upgrading the screen should be possible, as it is possible with any other Thinkpad as well.
>>
>>55985223

Spin drives on laptops are notorious for crashing. They aren't meant to be portable.

1) SSD will not crash from being moved (like a laptop should be).

2) SSD is fast

3) less battery use than spinners

>>55985161

How would this help?

>>55985381

How do I learn how to type faster without looking at the keyboard?

I'm really slow, and make a lot of mistakes, and can't type the numbers or symbols fast.

I can type faster by looking at the keyboard and using random fingers to tap the keys.

>>55985506

Get both. Even if ssd is small/weak, it'll save you trouble when your spinner crashes.

I already have one, it has served me well for 2 years with an i7, SSD and 16gb ram. I got the full HD version, of course. The TN panel is the only thing that really annoys me, but I haven't built up the courage to buy an IPS panel from laptopscreen and replace it.

A friend of mine is willing to sell his e545 with a 1366* screen and that might be a cheap replacement for her dying old acer piece of shit, but I can't let her use that display with a straight face.

So maybe I could swap the displays as I upgrade mine.

I'm trying to figure out if I should spend a few hundred bucks on a newer Thinkpad, or a little bit of money upgrading my current one. It's an older T61, C2D T7300, 3GB DDR, Quadro NVS 140M (which surprisingly has not burnt down the house yet)

It's fine for 99% of what I use it for, only qualm is I can't watch a 1080p movie on my external monitor while typing up a paper for school. I was thinking of getting an SSD, replacing the trackpad, and taking the thing apart to clean out the fans and replace the thermal paste.

It's just the backlight of my laptop which I want to turn off and on.

Shouldn't be that hard, right? Ancient Macbooks could do this.

Yeah, you could get a T420 or T430 for nearly the same price, just 10 to 30 dollars more.

I bought a t430 with an ssd and 8gb of ram for $200 even.

How good is the T420 1600x900 panel? I currently have a T520 with 1920x1080 panel, not the one from Lenovo but pretty good still, I think it was from an Elitebook, after calibrating pretty good colors and viewing angles. Asking cause I have an x100e that is pretty much worthless save for the cute factor and nice screen res, it's incredibly slow and hot though.

Don't buy one with an SSD. If you're buying new, Lelnovo (or any manufacturer) overprices out the ass for SSDs, so it's better to go with the cheapest storage option and add an SSD yourself. For used, there's no way to know what sort of abuse the previous owner put that SSD through, so it's a gamble, although I've bought three used Thinkpads with SSDs so far and they've all been fine.

Pic unrelated

My X201 Tablet arrived. Great condition; two broken pieces of plastic but otherwise cosmetically very good.

Got an SSD now and a legit charger. Going to get a caddy for the SSD to leave the rattlin' SSD club.

It shipped with an 8 cell battery and 4 GB of RAM. I'm thinking of getting a 4-cell battery for general university use. 8 cell when I need it, but for just class and office hours I don't anticipate marathon sessions. I have a non-terrible gaming PC that I do most work on. I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 8 GB because it's like $30.

Basically solely for following along in programming class, and asking programming questions in office hours. Harder to do that without a PC, though I have definitely tried. (Shudder)

The EU Lenovo outlets rarely have anything decent in stock.
If you are a student you can get a small discount through Lenovo's education program, but it's not a lot.
You could wait for christmas as a lot of hardware stores give nice discounts during that time.
But other than that I think you're out of luck. Maybe check ebay since 3rd party vendors often auction new Hardware there that got returned with the packaging broken. I got a new i5-4420 for 60€ less through that. (180€ instead of ~240€)

Currently running Linux Mint 18 on a Thinkpad T410. I find it a lot buggy than the previous version of Linux Mint. Is this because Ubuntu 16.04 has bugs and Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't?

I've got a WiFi bug where sometimes it doesn't work on startup or after suspend mode.

Also audio issue (where the audio is a little bit more lower than Windows, very strange) and video issue when I watch H264 movie or typing on terminal.

I got the 120gb M280, it works well however i only use it to store steam games since it's limited to sata2 in the T420, for main OS disk i have an 850 evo and a hdd in the ultrabay caddy
>>
Hello /tpg/. I was wondering what some reputable websites are where I can buy a used thinkpad. I would like to avoid buying a computer off of a shady guy on ebay or craigslist.
>>
>>55997460
Ah. From what I can see it looks like there's some software issue considering the two entries are from the same time, and the question mark and all caps. I'd suggest waiting a day or two to see if you get another message. Or contact the seller maybe he/she/attackheloself have had customers with similar issues.

>>55997473
That is a stupidly cute little computer. I wish physical keyboards on tiny devices were still a thing, I've never liked touchscreen keyboards.

>>55997495
I see. Sounds good. I plan on using it as a boot disk, while keeping the old hdd for bulk storage. Eventually I plan to upgrade the hdd to an ssd as well but it's a little out of my budget at the moment.

There is this German vendor where I bought mine.
The website is in English and they offer English keyboard layouts so I think they'll ship to wherever you live.

>>
>>55997525
Alright, I'll wait it out and see if something new pops up, thanks.
>>
>>55997473
>How hot do they tend to run, specifically at the keyboard and on the bottom side?
I'm fine with having it sitting on my balls, so not too hot.
>If I were to buy one of these from Craigslist then what things should I check while I have it in my hands before I buy it?

Your autism prevents you from checkihng seller's rating?

Another message just popped up, "In transit-ORIGIN SCAN", does it mean anything useful?

just checking in to post with my new 1080p monitor in my T420s.
After having to send back one screen this one finally works
>>
>>55997819
That's really cool, where did you get a kit to upgrade?
>>
>>55997828
from the guy on the thinkpads forums. I think he's out of stock currently
>>
>>55997796
I've no idea. The in transit part sounded promising, but the other entries were called that too. I'm not sure what origin scan. Maybe someone fucked up with the scanner, and now origin stands for original and they fixed it. I've no idea. Would calling UPS help, although they probably deal with too many packages to respond to concerns over a single parcel.
>>
>>55997836
Oh, so you got it before then. How much did it cost you altogether?
>>
>>55997851
I googled it for a bit and got
Origin Scan: This scan is the initial electronic record indicating UPS has possession of the shipment.
So it'll hopefully be alright.
>>
>>55997855
$59 for the kit plus $88 for the screen. Then I'm not counting money I've lost some money because I bought a screen that had in the description (Or comparable screen) that didn't fit.
And yes I've had the kit for a while now but only recently got the correct screen in the mail.

Looking into getting an X220 after my T420 bit the dust. Quality wise, would I be better off buying refurb from newegg or hitting up ebay?

My X61 tablet is coming this week, got all this for £35. Dubs decides which distro I put on it.
>>
>>55997933
Whatever you do, make sure you get an IPS model
>>
>>55997921
That's actually pretty cheap considering, how does the screen feel? I've got a T420s waiting to arrive, I think I'll be satisfied with the 1600x900 one though
>>
>>55997941
Compile Gentoo with CDE on it.
>>
>>55997941
Gentoo, friend
>>
>>55997988
First try winner, damn
>>
>>55997968
Screen feels like the original screen. Absolutely love the viewing angles. The biggest problem for me with the original display wasn't the resolution but the fact that it wasn't IPS. If you can get your hands on a 1600x900 IPS screen that'd improve it a lot too
>>
>>55997988
Can I use Arch with CDE instead?
>>
>>55998076
Ok, just show us CDE working on it, right?
>>
>>55998076
Only if you wish to thwart the will of the gods. Dubs have spoken.

should i get a t410 or t420

or are there any latitudes with similar specs in the same price range

What would say is the worst Thinkpad?
>>
>>55998534
second generation X1 Carbon for the keyboard alone.

My T430 just arrived and it's perfect, I'm so happy! Now I just need to wait for the ultrabay caddy in order to have a nice dual booting machine. I'm in love with this thing.

>>55998604
I feel the same about my T530, the thing just oozes durability and ruggedness.

>>55998864
What makes the xx40 so bad?
>>
>>55999088
bad keyboard layout from the xx30 series
fuck huge trackpad with no keyboard nipple buttons
and since it's not a macbook the trackpad was also terrible.
>>
>>55999088
Mouse buttons integrated into touchpad, very big touchpad you always accidentally touch while writing, chiclet keyboard with inferior layout.
In short, they sacrificed usability for looks.
>>
>>55984816
Paid right under $1200 for my W700ds when I first got it in 2013, and that machine was made in 2009!

Enjoy your TitanPad

>>55998534
SL400

>>55995296
My problem with Mac OSX is that it doesn't like my Linux USBs, WIndows deals with them just enough.
>>
Is an SSD really that good? At 90 USD, thats more than half of what i paid for my t420 itself (150). How much storage do i need? Should I just get a 850 Evo and be done with it?
Thanks
>>
>>55999360
For me my 250GB SSD is enough.
if you exclusively use your T420 for everything you'll prolly need more.
>>
What OS(s) should I run on an X201 tablet?

I'm thinking Win10 + Ubuntu, because I don't know other distros with a touch focused UI and Unity at least sort of werks.

Win10 because it has better tablet & laptop modes than Win7. However, I can't get wifi working on 8.1. How likely is it to work on 10? Should I go to 7 to try and get more of the Lenovo supported programs? Wifi works on Linux.

Looking to buy my first thinkpad, and am thinking about the X200.
I'm curious to see if anyone here has one, how is the size and weight? Its portabillity and battery life are what really attract me, as well as its super cheap used price I find on site slike ebay.

Althugh aybe something in the T series would tret me better, but is the battery life in T series TP's any noticably worse?
>>
There's a T430 on my local craigslist for 175, should I pick it up?
>>
>>56000328
If it's not the memeresolution panel.
>>
>>56000370
Which memeresolution are you referring to? it's 1600x900.
>>
>>56000407
I meant don't get it if it's 1366x768.

Buy it.
>>
>>56000449
Alright, Thank you.
