with virtual machines I am always deleting and messing with them, I don't intend to try to run more than one at a time but I need the key to let me reinstall

what if I install in bootcamp, don't like it or it takes up too much space then decide to run a vm?

Yeah you can, but after like 10 activations you will have to reactive your activations by calling the Microsoft line, you'll talk to an automated machine and have to fill in some numbers.
