Has anyone used 9front or Plan9 before?
>>
yes, people have
>>
>>55980646
Tried to, but my hardware wasn't supported. There's always VirtualBox.
>>
I like some of the software that came out of 9front but have never bothered to use either myself

It's a good topic for a research paper I suppose
>>
>>55980767
its a pretty neat system. I would use it if it had a working modern web browser and drivers
>>
>>55980801
the current state of OS research is shameful compared to what it was back then

I blame it on the hardware limitations. People with limited hardware were forced to write good systems. They had a good sense of scaling. These days it's just a million layers of unsecure code patched together to make it resemble function.

There are many fascinating concepts in plan9 and inferno that have mutated into web based unoptimized garbage over the years
>>
>>55981005
You mean people don't care about speed so they just write whatever works?
>>
>>55980646
Yes. I have had 9fro t installed on bare metal for better part of a year. I vnc to a slackware box in the next room when i want to browse this shitty website or do email
>>
>>55981729
yeah, it basically started with "hey now I have the memory, storage and CPU cycles I don't have to follow any rules because I can write the most convoluted sloppy shit and it will still run eventually"

The end user doesn't care but other devs do
>>
>>55982596
programmers have always been lazy and increased computing power has increased programmer laziness
>>
>>55980646
Yes, great system, but also very impractical to use nowadays.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
