Can anyone tell me why there was literal toilet paper inside of floppy disks? Was it just to wipe the dust off?

I used to take broken ones apart for fun when I was a kid.

Floppy disks are garbage. I remember using them in the early 90's and they're ridiculously unreliable. Their reliability heavily depends on storage conditions. If you don't keep them at room temp with low humidity, they die.

USB flash storage is one of the best things to happen to storage media in the past 30 years.

floppy disk from the 70-80s > floppy disk from the 90s

By the 90s the floppy disk was on it's way out so most manufacturers were competing on cost and trying to cut corners to say a penny. I have some floppy disk for my commodore made in the early 80s and they still work fine compared to floppy disk I had from the late 90s that died in 2 years.

If the military are using floppies from the golden era then there's nothing to worry about. They probably should move to a sd card to floppy adapter though
