From the end of the previous thread:

Who decides and where is it decided that my private network will have IP address 192.168.0.0/16 instead of 10.0.0.0/8?

What happens if the network uses 192.168.0.0/16, but a 65537th device connects? It cannot get an address, but then what?

Not really gaming much, just some light 4K gaming. I will be doing video editing, and I just wanted to confirm that all the parts are good. The 1080 has already been ordered and now I'm just purchasing everything else. I want to know if that's a good mobo or not. There are not many in-depth mobo guides so things get a little confusing. Thanks
>>
>>55976690
The router determines the lan address
If you run out of addresses you can't connect another device, you can get around this with another router and NAT
>>
>>55976739
> light 4K gaming

Kids these days.

Watercooling is a waste and if you drop that PSU down to 650w you could probably get it for half that price. For mobo's just go with whatever toms reccomends

I was streaming on twitch and accidentally opened a tab I had open with my social security number and name/address/birthdate and other such info on it. There were around 250 people in stream, how likely is it one of them will do something bad with this? Can they? What can I do to protect myself?
>>
>>55976690
Your DHCP server decides it if you run one (it is probably embedded in your router somewhere). Otherwise, you can manually add static assignments.

If you run out of addresses you can't connect any more devices.

Is there any reason to use it over WIN7?

I got an SSD and tried 10 out just for remote desktop as compared to splashtop (There's no difference)

I don't have any hardware that takes advantage of DX12

Should I just install 7 on the SSD and use it as my main drive?

Not sure whether I should ask here or on /biz/, but here it goes anyways.

I'm a noobie bitcoin user, and I've opened a wallet at coinb.in. I've successfully made/received a payment with the associated address, and then went to make a new address. However, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to access the new address (I have all the keys associated with it).

Followup question, duplicate MAC addresses only really cause problems if they're on the same network? How do these problems manifest? Is it possible to spoof a MAC address so it's a copy of someone else's on the network in order to render them unable to use the internet?
>>
>>55976937
Most of the arguments for using windows 10 will get stronger in a few years. For the time being if you don't need it for anything in particular might as well roll with 7.
>>
>>55976659

Why do some private trackers insist on having stuff like DHT and PEX disabled? If I understand correctly, individual torrents can just set a private flag.
>>
>>55976971
DHT opens you up to seeding/leeching with peers outside of the trackers group, and obviously they don't want that
>>
>>55977001

So a private flag in the torrent file doesn't override the DHT being enabled in the client?
>>

Use Dwight you fuck.

I was stupid enough to use Yahoo email to make most of my important online accounts, is there any possible way to transfer all of that to another email provider? Or am I fucked?
>>
>>55976924
If you don't set port forwarding on your router you'll only be able to access other machines in your local network.
>bruteforcing
Disable password login and just use SSH keys.
If you still want passwords install fail2ban.
>>
I get free internet through my company, but it goes through that companys internal VPN after the router, a VPN i have no access to. Is it still possible to SSH into my desktop from another network with such a VPN in place?
>>
>>55977148
This

>>55976924
If you just want to use it on your local network then just stop your router from forwarding ssh traffic into your network from outside (which is the default on mine at least), unless someone is actually part of your local network (ethernet into your router, or wifi) they won't be able to talk to your local/private IP, thus all any chinese botnets will see is just nothing, as your router simply drops their packets, or rejection packets if it rejects them. fail2ban is overkill at this point, unless you frequent wifi-cafes, but wouldn't hurt either.

It does. They're retarded and you can safely ignore them because your client won't use DHT or PEX for a private torrent.
>>
>>55977081
I think the only answer is to start emailing people the new address you want to use, you can probably set yahoo to forward all your shit you still get automatically though as well, so you don't miss anything.

That's what I suspected, especially since torrents from private trackers show your pic related exactly. Good to know I can keep DHT enabled on a client level, since my other torrens were suffering quite a bit.

The DHCP server will assign the IPs based on the MAC address, if there are duplicate MAC addresses it generally ends up screwing up both machine's connections in my experience.

This may sound stupid but sometimes i feel like i use computers like they were an extension of my body, like i masturbate and mindleslly browse with them, and sooner or later my file directories end up convulted and i lose track of what the fuck is inside them, what programs i have installed, where my files are, what files i have, etc

I also feel like i proceed in a very fast trial-and-error way that ends up leaving a lot of "crumbs" everywhere

Its like they end up full of snots if it makes any sense, they feel sticky and disgusting.

But sometimes i see videos or read things other people write about computer usage and i see that they use computers in a very orderly fashion, like very carefuly, clearly, and focused

I just like lose myself in them and the bareer between masturbatory machine and work environment gets very fuzzy

How can i fix this?

If you're determined to use linux, then open a terminal emulator, like xterm, roxterm, urxvt, or whatever people use these days, it should look like the "command prompt" in windows, then type: "java -jar minecraft.jar" or whatever the jar is called

ARP question.
If I want to get the packets that are meant for someone else in the same network as me, I could "spoof" an ARP response for every ARP request regardless of what my ip actually is. Right?
If I do that, will the original recipient still get the packet? In other words, will the packet be duplicated or will I steal it from him?

ISP: TWC, modem: Netgear CM400.
Everything says I'm connected to the internet but nothing works. Trying to go to a site brings up a "connection not secure" page warning me about elb02.activemymodem, on Firefox, Chrome, and IE . I thought it might be some virus but a complete bootscan didn't detect anything, plus, it's not only affecting my pc, but my laptop (which I know for a fact is virus free) and my phone over wifi. I ruled out the router by connecting directly to the modem but I get the same thing. Factory resetting modem didn't work. TWC says nothing's wrong with my account and there's no outages, physical lines and connections are all fine, too. Hi,I'm still rocking a GTX 460 and it's finally time for an upgrade.I was leaning towars the RX480, but my PSU only has a 6pin PCI connector and the AIB 480's require an 8pin connector. Would it be safe running a 6pin to 8pin adapter or would it be better to get a 2x molex to 8pin adapter?
Or would it be safer to fork out a few bucks more and get a 1060 ?

Clock speed doesn't mean shit if it's AMD. Get a new mobo/CPU before upgrading your GPU. Even if your current mobo is compatible with it, even if your power supply can do it, you'll get bottlenecked by the CPU until you upgrade that.

Since you'll have to upgrade the PSU before the GPU then the CPU/mobo before you can even fully utilize the new GPU, I'd suggest saving up and just building a whole new rig.
>>
Posted before, no answers. Made a new rig but shit won't boot, nothing seems out of order but my GPU. It's fans turn on for about 5 seconds then shuts off, but it still is operating, I believe. I touched it after a while and I noticed it was at a reasonably high temperature. No Video input on my monitor, tried hdmi and dvi, no mobo error beeps, all my fans turn on and remain on till my pc shuts down. Is my GPU faulty? It's the MSI GTX 1070 armor over clock

Plug video input into the CPU port to use the integrated graphics. If that works, the GPU is faulty.

>>
>>55982318
AMD cards are very inefficient and take up a fuckton of power. 400w won't be enough. Even if you do Nvidia desu

>>55982460
There should be two sets of ports, one is just a group of video ports (GPU) and another has a single port surrounded by Ethernet port/USB ports/etc.

Plug it into the solo one, should be at the top of the back.
>>
>>55982508
Thanks for the reply but I've been powering an OC'd GTX 460 for like 5 years on this PSU. A single 6pin card like the 1060 will be fine, and I'm pretty sure a RX480 would be fine as well. I'm just wondering whether it's best using a 6pin to 8pin adapter or molex to 8pin adapter.
DESU I'd have the same problem even I upgrade my PSU because no 550w PSU has 8pin connectors anyway.

So I run
Windows 10
and I have something that really bothers me.

I have a user account password and it auto locks the computer after a few mins on inactivity.

On Windows 7 you usually only had to start typing the password and it would work immediatly. However, on Windows 10 the lockscreen has the slideshow covering the password prompt.

This means that now I have to press a button, wait maybe a second for the lockscreen animation to finish and THEN I can type my password. This gets really frustrating when I want to quickly unlock my PC.

TL;DR
Is there any way to force Windows to ALWAYS remain on the password prompt and not do that dumb lockscreen shit?

I made an excel sheet for a project I'm doing.

I had a column with #s formatted this way "-XXX" where X is the numbers. However, I did all the work and now those quantities have doubled.

What is a way for me to double the quantities in each cell for the whole column in an automatic fashion? I don't want to redo the whole thing manually if possible.

Well if you want it to be on your desktop, that's the only way I know of is turning it into a server.

Dynamic dns is pretty easy. You can setup your router or computer to report your ip to the service, that will then add as a dns

Actually hosting is different. What do you plan on serving your site? What's your backend written in, or is it just static webpages?

I have made a website using PHP with WAMP and I want to make it live for as cheap as I can. Though now I'm starting to be concerned about the security aspect. I don't want bots gaining access to my desktop and turning it in to a zombie. But the website's for personal use so prettying up the process (ie. domain name) is not necessary. I am whitelisting IP addresses so that it doesn't generate the page at all if they aren't on it.

>>55986594
Login to your router, enable port forwarding to forward port 80 to the computer hosting the site. Assuming you set up WAMP correctly, that's all you need to do. The "url" of the site is just your IP address.
If you want an actual url, buy it from somewhere (google sells them) and just set it up to redirect to your IP.
There are more security measures to be taken if this was an "actual" website, but for personal usage you'll be fine.

>I am whitelisting IP addresses so that it doesn't generate the page at all if they aren't on it.
Usually in pen testing, outdated services are more hacked than webpage vulnerabilities themselves.

So wamp is already running and you can go to localhost in your browser and see your site? If so, look up port forwarding (for port 80, and 443 if you are doing https). After doing that, look up your external ip. You should be able to go to another computer and type in http://your.ip.address.here. After that works, buy a domain or get a free subdomain (yoursitename.no-ip.org or something like that)

4k isn't a huge feature, but most midlevel tvs are starting to include it anyway, so you might as well. The nice thing about 4k is that it's literally 4 pixels to every one of 1080p. So you don't have any weridness scaling like you would on some other resolutions. Some people prefer the blur of a single pixel to 4 super sharp ones, but otherwise there's no negatives besides a slight price premium. If you find a tv with HDR though, I would go with that instead, even though there's not a lot of content for it yet. Enjoy your anime!

>The nice thing about 4k is that it's literally 4 pixels to every one of 1080p.
What kind of best buy training manual did you read that in?

4K is obviously better than 1080p, but unless the content you are watching is in a resolution higher than 1080p, there's no point. I admitedly don't know how long it will take anime to start pumping out 4K videos as a standard, but that isn't going to happen with youtube for at least 4 or five years due to the low budgets of most channels.
"Upscaling" is really nothing more that "streching" with something akin to anti-aliasing. If you pay even $1 extra for a 4K TV and only watch 1080p videos on it, you're an idiot.

>>
>>55987126
It's literally true. If you lay out a 1080p image on a 4k screen without any upconversion, every dot of the image will be represtented by 4 pixels; 2x the vertical and 2x the horizontal resolution of a 1080 screen. This means you don't run into the same loss of image quality you would experience when trying to watch 1080p video on a 1440 screen. The only down side is the increased sharpness annoys some people because the reduced blur of the more "precise" pixels can make an image appear "harsher" than 1080 on 1080. Non of this has anything to do with upconverting which is a feature I have no faith in, nor does it have to do with the fact that most "4k content" is compressed to the point that it might as well be 1080 for all the good it does you. I don't personally seek out 4k tvs, it just happens to be a feature that's included in most mid to upper level tvs and at this point I wouldn't avoid a tv just because it includes 4k.
>>
>>55987598
If you keep it low that means the source of the heat is being kept cool. And isn't that what it's all about?
