Free is focused on data storage/ZFS.
Open is focused on security.
Net is focused on portability (running on lots of devices)

They sometimes write code that's far more complex than it has to be. They sometimes make maddeningly and confusingly dumb security decisions (most notably, *no* address space layout randomization). That's all I know.

I don't think there is one. PC-BSD is the most graphical - maybe that's easiest. Of the core BSDs, OpenBSD is the easiest and simplest to configure.
