Last week I tried encrypting my hard drive, I thought it would be a good layer of security in the event my laptop was stolen or something.
I was wrong, something happened and the install was corrupted. Can't escape kernel panic this morning, everything is lost. All my funny memes are goodbye now.
Don't bother falling for the encryption meme, it's more trouble than it is worth, and you'll probably lose all your shit.

This is when you move to an SSD
This is when you learn to make backups

nice try, NSA

SSDs are fucking shit. It just takes ESD to kill it.

You'd have to shock the connectors, which is as likely to happen as with an HDD
???
> he doesnt back up important data first
You honestly deserve this. If commom sense isnt enough, life will force you to learn anyways.

On a magnetic drive, you could disassemble the shocked drive and "transplant" the platters. Magnetically stored data remain unaffected.
On the SSD, the FLASH chips along with the data are fried with the rest of the electronics in the drive.
>no backups
You deserved it, anon. Buy an external HDD and back up all of your memes and Chinese cartoons before doing something as major as that. I found it easier to wipe and start from scratch when encrypting.
If you're using Windoze, use Veracrypt. It makes the whole process easier.
