Windows 7 is a 7 year old OS. It's in extended support. So of course they're slowing down and stopping certain updates. If you're trying to avoid data collection then using Ubuntu isn't the best choice either. It'll save your search results and send them to Amazon. I'd say use a different distro like Mint or Xubuntu. I've been using Windows 10 since launch. It's a great operating system developed by brilliant minds at Microsoft. The telemetry is simply to provide the brilliant Windows developers with data on how to improve the operating system.

Cortana is super useful. I personally didn't turn off anything. It's a great operating system and they gave it away for free. You should really get off Linux and get on Windows 10.

You don't even need to use a key to install Win10. I have Windows 10 installed without key on my VM, the restrictions come after a period of time and they are cosmetic only.

No significant changes from 8.1 I'd say, but there's a big difference in 7 and 8.1 in terms of RAM management. For some reason, win7 never tried to clean RAM so I always had it somewhere at 70-75%. Win8.1 manages memory better and it didn't go higher than 20-30% when browsing internet.
