Remember when AMD was actually competitive and most of /g/ was still building for the first time?
>Phenom II x4 vs Core i5 760
>8GB of ram is overkill
>Radeon 5850 vs GTX 460
>Higher end Fermis catching fire and wood screws
>Everyones case is ricer or Antec 300
>Waiting for Windows 7
I miss those days.
We all miss 'em.
I know that feel OP.

Remember when people accused nvidia of gimping older cards like kepler but really AMD gimped hd6000 and hd5000 instead?
Good times.
When I first came to /g/ it was already the i5-2500K + GTX 560Ti era.

The last time I remember AMD being worth it was the 6000+.

Phenom IIs were pretty sweet. Still competed with Intel in single core processing, unlocked cores that usually got to 4.2GHz, you could buy a Phenom II x3 and 90% of the time it would turn into an x4 with a setting in the BIOs.
Also /g/ didn't talk about phones yet because they sucked.
My first /g/ recommended build was
Athlon 64 x2 5000+
2GB DDR2
Radeon 3850
Antec 300
Antec 500W PSU
I built it for Bad Company and The Orange Box.
I miss IN Elite. He was a quality and dedicated shitposter.

Yes, and they still are, but only in third world countries.
>Phenom II X4 965 BE (eventually overclocked to 3.7ghz)
>HD6850 (later x2 in CF)
>4GB RAM (later 8)
Man, that build got me through so much. It ended up being such a great first build. The only fuckup I made was the motherboard--it was a shitty MSI motherboard that had such a shitty VRM that there were reports of the board exploding and catching on fire even at stock speeds. "Military grade, built for overclocking!" my fucking ass. Nonetheless, I gave it a modest little overclock, but it's one of my biggest regrets to this day that I was never able to push that fucker to that golden 4ghz.

I made this mistake too. Fuck Biostar.
>>55926793
I'm still using a 965BE. The trick is to not play new games.
>>55927990
Holy fuck I forgot about that guy
>>55928092
I still use mine for home server, probably a waste of cash with that power use.
>>55928088
>t-thanks MSI
You really had to be a much more wary shopper back then with regards to motherboards. If only I had known.
To this day, though, I refuse to buy MSI shit even though I hear they've gotten a lot better.
>there will never EVER be a card as good as the 560ti again
still running i5 2500k, 560Ti 448 and 4GB ram :-)
>>55928170
i5 2500k release and Samsung Galaxy S II started current /g/
>>55928131
Just buy a celeron, it might even perform better.
