Criteria:
1) I require a portable workstation as I divide my time between 2 countries
2) I'd like to get back into RPG's, MMORPG's and/or FPS
3) I'd like it to stay relevant for at least 3-5 years
4) I'm strongly considering 17 inches
5) Cost prefer under $2,000
Thoughts on ASUS ROG series vs DELL Alienware? ROG seem cheaper with better stats
Also 960M vs 965M vs 970M vs 980M and advice regarding differences between same model's as I swear I've seen some 980M's with 4gig RAM while other 980M's have 8gig
I'm not asking you to go shopping or do the hard work for me, mainly just feedback regarding what direction to look

An alienware is no way portable.
Most MMORPG don't need much, unless you plan to do raids or high pop zone events.

Alienware has expandability with the Graphics AMP that lets you use a Desktop graphics card, so in the end it will last you longer. The only other companies with similar tech are MSI and Razer. Razer has best portability but weak on board graphics. MSI's laptops tend to have heat issues that can cause throttling.

Sorry, regarding 'portability' I just mean I put it in checked baggage through airports. Can't do that with a tower & monitor etc.
I have a Mac Air 11 inch for light work and internet browsing which I take in carry-on.
Read the motherfucking sticky.
Alienware is universally overpriced. It's basically Razer. Asus ROG is pretty poor build quality though, and their RMA process could be likened to getting out of a very snug sleeping bag while hogtied.
960M is a bit weak, 970M will last you two years at most, 980M more like three.

Alienware are pretty thick, I've never felt one of their laptops, but I've been using a Asus laptop for most of my needs for a fair while, until I recently got this desktop.

Note: This list doesn't get updated often, currently it is quite out of date and will be updated soon.
If you do end up going Alienware, talk to customer service before buying, you can literally ask them if its possible to get the price knocked down and 9/10 they do it. I had a $2200 laptop build knocked down to $1500 just for asking if discounts were possible.

ROG are better for the money, and better built.
Get the absolute best GPU you can find if you want it to last that long. 980M at the very least, if you can find something with SLI at that price point even better.
Look into Gigabyte's Aorus line as well, you might be able to find one at that price with an actual Desktop-Grade 980, that would be the best bet.

If you can stretch your budget a bit, this seems like a good deal:

Dual 970M with 6GB should hold strong for a while.
I know we hate Reddit but just throw out a line at r/SuggestALaptop and get a few other options you can compare with.
