Still holding on, though, there is no excuse to upgrade to 16gb since it's cheap.
Normie machine, it's perfect.

Actually, game engines nowadays are pieces of shit too.
It is retarded how 10 years ago you could build 3D games on Source which could run on fucking toasters, but nowadays you need a middle end PC to run 2D games.
>>
>>55915663
>non-ECC
I hope your data is worth nothing
>>
>>55915710
What that even means?
>>
>>55915737
Yes
>>
>>55915737
Systems without ECC memory are very prone to catastrophic failure including loss of your entire filesystem, crashes, or undetected errors in your business logic.

Imagine a bit flip while compiling, say, firefox. Suddenly you end up with a firefox process that will crash randomly, also causing potential data loss

Really, given the relatively minor extra price you need to pay for ECC (over non-ECC) there's little reason to risk your data and stability just for the sake of saving a few cents

http://danluu.com/why-ecc/
>>
>>55915783
Non-ECC grant better performance though and I heard people say that ECC are literally useful only for servers.
>>
People should stop upgrading to better hardware. Users having better hardware encourages developers to not write good software since they know the users can just brute force through the crap code anyway.
>>
>>55914020
Yeah, nah, that's just cheaper.
>>
>>55915813
>I heard people say that ECC are literally useful only for servers.
Because most people only story their data in the cloud :^) But keep in mind you also need a mainboard and CPU that supports it.

>Non-ECC grant better performance though
You can get the same performance by paying a bit more. Compared to your CPU or GPU it's still only a fraction of what you're paying anyway. How much is your data worth?
>>
>>55915880
I'm planning to store my data on my external HDD, whereas I'll put OS and games and maybe even music on my SSD.
>>
>>55915853
OR how about you just stop being poor.

>>
I have 2GB in my thinkpad and an SSD.
I haven't really felt the need to add more ram because everything is so snappy, but it's so cheap now, holy shit.

Am I wasting money?
>>
>>55916059

KYS.
You haven't even stated what laptop.
>>
>>55915912
So how do you plan on keeping that data secure? Do you have a backup system in place? Does your backup system use ECC? Or are you relying on the hard drives alone? Do you have redundancy (RAID)? What raid technology? How fault tolerant is it against memory errors?

Not wanting to spend a few extra dollars now means your stuck with it later. Instead of buying it and upgrading it like a pc you have to think about what you need for the next few years and start there. Called using your head.
>>
>>55913811
Depends what you do.

If it's a Facebook machine, 8GB is fine. If you do pretty much anything else you'll want 16. You may never use every megabyte but you'll be glad for the headroom.

Plus it's cheap as balls these days and you can always use the spare memory for things like a RAMDisk like I do. I have 2GB of my RAM dedicated to a RAMDisk which holds my firefox cache and some of my photoshop scratch disk. I can also use it to transfer large files between disks almost instantly. So if I have a chunky file I want to move from local to storage, I can move it to the ramdisk first in less than 2 seconds and then move it from there to storage in the same amount of time, whereas even on Sata 6Gb/s the file might take minutes to transfer directly from disk to disk, if I had more than 16GB I could move GIANT files around instantly, but 2GB is enough space to move most stuff conveniently, even if it means doing it in batches. If you really wanted to I bet you could even write a small program that would automate the process so that you could drag and drop files from different disks and it would automatically pass them through the RAM disk first.

This is very true, I once got a dual Slot-1 motherboard in about 2001 (Dual Pentium II board only), with a GeForce 2 and some other shit. Probably the best computer in my neighborhood at the time.

Later on I even got a dual Socket 370 mainboard for dual Celerons and got pushed to the top again.

Nowadays, though, people recycle it and I don't often find any good stuff anymore.
>>
>>55918220
>Nowadays, though, people recycle it and I don't often find any good stuff anymore.
Right, but if you have a little cash, you can buy it based on weight, and offer maybe 10% more.

I bought a quantity of server drives that way. Paid $5K for the lot, ended up clearing $80K, and that was after selling them to resellers.

Obviously not every lot is going to be like that, but it's definitely possible if you know what you're looking at.
>>
>>55917845
>A lot of times, you can get it for free or scrap value based on weight, as companies start to recycle.
Yeah, I snagged two used E5 2670s for $70 each, but I didn't find anything cheaper than $20/4GB or so for used DDR3 ECC memory.

(So I just sucked it up and spent $180 on the lot)

>Incorrectly labels megatransfers as MHz
Hertz is applicable to everything periodic. The unit is literally just “1/s”.

If you want to get pedantic about calling it “transfers”, then you also need a few other virtual units to the other numbers.

>Uses that to try find the latency
It's valid reasoning. If you need that many clock ticks for the memory controller to get you your data, that's the latency you end up with.

>Calls that MHz too
What do you mean, too? Wasn't that what your first point was already about? Why are you repeating yourself? But allow me to refer to my previous justification

That idiot referred to latency as MHz when we're talking about time, which is not measured in hertz but rather in seconds. If you don't understand this then you don't really belong in any discussion about the technical aspects of RAM.

Are you mentally deficient? Hertz is literally the same as time, it's just the inverse unit

Lower latency (s) = higher hertz (1/s)

As far as I can tell, you're the only one mentally incapable of understanding that you can also measure latencies in terms of throughput (where higher = better)

>Except that's HALF the latency you end up with as you're taking the megatransfers number, not the clock rate of the RAM you muppet.
Uh huh, I'm sure a factor of 2 on both numbers would change which of the two compared memory types is faster

That's irrelevant as confusing the transfer rate with the clock rate is the issue here.

Yes, as anyone who uses the wrong units to refer to something in a professional environment (or even a school environment) is a mouth breathing knuckle dragger. You'll lose points in an exam and you'd cause serious problems with other members on your team.

AMD C-60 netbook for this purpose. 2GB of RAM and integrated Radeon GPU, actually runs all my games perfect and can do 720p video...

Only issue is that the screen is smashed to hell and back, and it's not worth my time to repair it, so I've got it connected to a 1080p TV to watch YouTube and Kiss Cartoon on.

With Windows 7, it lets me have 4, maybe 5 tabs open before it starts to slow down. i get the feeling it should be running XP, but it seems like everything I can find on it points towards it running 7 from the factory.

Acer Aspire One 722 I think. I'd have to look later when I can.

Let's think for a moment:
>CPU A needs 20 minutes per episode
>CPU B needs 15 minutes per episode
The second one is obviously faster (lower amount of time taken)

Now let's look at the inverse units:
>CPU A encodes 3 episodes per hour
>CPU B encodes 4 episodes per hour
The second one is still obviously faster, but this time it's the higher frequency that's better

Higher frequency = better = lower time needed

It's real, REAL simple stuff here

Over here in yurop even high schoolers learn how to convert between time periods in seconds and frequencies in hz. But I'm not trolling. I'm genuinely failing to understand how you fail to understand this basic concept

Every thing I have posted has been logically sound, and then you came here and bitched at me for using the inverse unit of time for comparing memory performance

Here, let me fucking make you happy by doing the conversion for you since you seem to be too stupid to use a calculator:

>2133 MHz / 15 = 142.2 MHz
>1600 MHz / 11 = 145.5 MHz
>second is better

1 / 142.2 MHz = 7.03 ns
1 / 145.5 MHz = 6.87 ns
>second is still better

oh, and before you complain about the factor of two also missing, let me make you perfectly happy:
>7.03 ns * 2 = 14.06 ns
>6.87 ns * 2 = 13.74 ns
>SECOND IS STILL FUCKING BETTER

How fucking stupid are you? Do you not understand what an inverse unit is? You have to inverse the number when exchanging the label

20 times per second = 20 Hz

To convert that to the inverse unit you need to take the reciprocal or 1/20 s = 50 ms

(CAS / Frequency (MHz)) × 1000 = X ns
Now, here are the numbers you have provided:
2133MT, 15 CAS latency
1600MT 11 CAS latency
(15/1066)*1000=~14 nanoseconds.
(11/800)*1000=13.75 nanoseconds

I bet you're the guy who insists on writing every single number out to the 10th decimal place in a maths exam because “muh exactness!!!1!1!”

Yes, if you want to know the exact time you need to transfer the first word of any given memory region after a cache miss, that would be the full formula you have to apply

but the idea here was not measuring the full time taken, it was simply comparing two different DRAM timings to figure out which one is faster in practice. For this, only the coefficient function of the relevant parameters matters, as everything else is a linear function and therefore a poset homomorphism

One of the companies I contract for have been installing 16gb of ram in all the laptops and desktops because people think they're slow and more memory will make them quicker... I proposed the idea to only install 8gb and a SSD and they looked at me like i was crazy! They have a 64bit OS but only use 32bit apps....

What about for music production? Is an Acer aspire 5251 with upgraded 8 gigs of ram going to cut it? They are like $100 and $144 total for 8 gigs.

Are there better options for music production?

That's because those normies probably never updated their applications. So many companies/software writers I have seen this past year have finally dropped xp and os x 10.6-10.8.

it's not slower if it has the same MHZ

people just think that because they didn't make ECC for very high MHZ
