Is Linux Mint secure? Or was that blown out of proportion?
Relatively
>>55907214
more secure than windows. less secure than a fully patched loonix system most likely
>>55907214
Blown out of proportion. The affected repository was fixed pretty quickly, and then most people could have avoided the hacks If they would have just verified the image before installing.
The hackers got into Linux mint 17 and now we're on 18 anyway.
They don't apply security updates to the kernel by default, so no.

What is insecure on windows?
>>55908967
This. They still "recommend" using 3.19.0-32
We're now past version 4

Linux Mint...the Windows of Linux
Ubuntu... the OSX of Linux
Arch...the MSDOS of Linux

Yes build your own linux, don't use these premade shits!

>tfw people think Arch Linux is building your own Linux
>>55910388
Yes in this case we should keep using pirated windows without internet access!
>>55909283
Fucking everything, shit. Good luck if you run Windows without antivirus/firewall.

>Or was that blown out of proportion?
It was, but there's no real need to run Mint anyway.
The Cinnamon DE is the best thing about it and you could install that on any other distro.
The rest of what makes Mint Mint is a handful of tools like their system updater and driver installer.
>>55910368
No, you're confusing Linux distros with DE's, which can be installed on any Linux distro.
Cinnamon and KDE are the Windows of Linux
Unity and GNOME are the OSX of Linux
The terminal is the MSDOS of Linux
>>55910442
LXDE is the win2k of linux.

linux mint is one of the least secure ways to use linux.
Updates are important.
Bugs in the kernel is very likely a security risk.
Mint has different tiers of updates, marking kernel updates as unstable, meaning they advice people to stick with an old (possible insecure) kernel because it might cause problems.
This mentality is dangerous.
If you are afraid of updating your system because it might break, then you are less likely to patch your system.
A good example of this is when the mint site got hacked and someone put malicious software in the iso's.
The reason this hack happened was a mix of using bad defaults and not updating the software.
If you install mint, you are the kind of person who wants to install a linux distro, leave it for half a decade.
You are probably one of those who used windows xp or 7 until the end and a bit thereafter.
You are using linux because it is more convenient.
It is not because of the rapid development.
It is not because of ideology.
It is not because of security.

Evo/Lution is deprecated.
Use Architect.
