Anti-theft sticker which may or may not have been placed there by the store ... sometimes stores might insert them, then later return unsold stock to the publisher and neglected to remove them. Then the book was eventually sold to the place you bought it from.

I want to say the publisher might've put it in themselves, but it makes no sense as different anti theft systems use different tags. Unless the publisher implemented them as some kind of inventory tracking system in their facilities.
