>with a screen resolution of 1440 x 2560
>very qhd, much pixels, wow screen etc
>phone has a powersaving/performance toggle that downscales the display to 720p
>performance
>720p

Remind me again, besides looking good on paper (because bigger numbers means our display is better, right?), why do we need resolutions greater than 1080p in portable smartphones plagued by poor batteries and limited processing power when even Samsung admits that the device will perform much better at a lower (and much useful) resolution?

Owner of a 5, 5S and soon SE here. I really don't give a shit about 5.7" ultra high density phones. Phablets are for fucking shut-ins. Try communicating with something like this when you're out, using transport, carrying things, etc.

Using your phone as your primary media consumption device is fucking retarded. Companies should be focusing on ultra high-res tablets. The iPad Pro 12.9" should have been some 4K shit. Its got a pixel density of 264ppi, while the iPhone is around 320.

Apple's kind of based from this point of view: they don't give a fuck about spec wars with Android and everybody asks why their phones are best in benchmarks and reviewers say their screen it's best.
>>

Well because high resolutions look good in VR, and when you are saving battery you can always downscale. Win-win.

These are the kind of people who will say that anything less than 1080p on a 6" or smaller display is unacceptable and literally hurts their eyes to look while, while posting on a 1080p-1440p monitor with pixel density lower than an iPhone SE.

Only for vr. And even before the whole vr thing the companies didn't know what to do with it either.

Except that with this "solution" the power savings will be negligible because you're still gonna be powering the full screen, just at a lower resolution.

There's not much innovation in phones in the last few years.

You cucks are under the impression that a lower resolution smartphone will cost less.

It doesn't. It'll cost the same and you're passing the savings onto faceless corporation.

Also with how powerful modern socs are I doubt there's a significant power consumption difference between resolutions.
>>
>>55902648
I blame Apple
>>
There's no reason for larger than 1080p on a smartphone, the PPI is already at the point where it makes pretty much no fucking difference to raise the resolution. It's just wasting resources. They should focus on more processing power, greater energy efficiency, and longer battery life instead of wasting everyone's time and money making bigger screens that add nothing.

POOR!
>>
>>55901395
>Remind me again, besides looking good on paper (because bigger numbers means our display is better, right?), why do we need resolutions greater than 1080p in portable smartphones
One very simple reason: Because idiots who run after specs like flies to flypaper are really common these days and have enough money to plonk down a decent computer's worth on a phone.

I've never owned an iPhone and don't plan to, but I respect Apple for purposefully going overboard with specs just to draw in the idiots whose knowledge doesn't really exceed being able to read a spec sheet. After all my current phone is an original Jolla phone and it's specs are of a mid range device from 3 years ago, but I still think it's a better device than any android device on the market.
>>
>just want a phone I only need to charge once a week
>use textra, maps and firefox, no other apps
>cheap phones have small battery and shit battery life
>expensive phones have big battery and shit battery life

why
>>
>>55902879
I'll excuse you since it's obvious you haven't owned any high resolution phones.

Anyways people on xda have been experimenting with lowering the resolution for years. It doesn't do shit.

The power savings of lower resolution displays comes mainly from the panel itself.
>>
>>55902967
>Because idiots who run after specs like flies to flypaper

this is why people buy absolute shit laptops that are 5% faster than the business model but come with shit keyboards, trackpads, and build quality that makes the whole experience terrible
>>
>>55902950
iPhone screens are always on top, switching places with current gen Galaxy phones.
>>
Perspective: Samsung's 2560x1440 panels draw less power than the 1920x1080 panels they used in the S5.
>>
I've been saying for years that everything past 720p is meme-tier and the average person can easily get buy with a qHD (not Quad but quarter) display. Fucking companies need to make a 720p smartphone with a 5000mAh to 10000mAh battery. People want to go DAYS on a charge not fucking hours.
>>
>>55903121
Then make a 1080p panel that draws even less power to give even better battery life.

>>
>>55903121
Perspective: Samsung's 2560x1440 panels draw more power than the 1920x1080 panels they use in their current gen line-up (A9, C5, C7).
>>
>>55903189
this. why are we content with effectively steady state qualitative user experiences? if we just pegged CPU power and whatnot at 2013 levels we could be using much more power-efficient CPUs now to get the same computational power, the same screen resolution, etc...; but have battery lives well higher than we had back then.
>>
>>55903239
Constantly holding something back gives them room to make next year's flagships slightly more appealing.
They don't want to sell something you'll be happy with for 5 years, they want to sell something you'll replace in 1 year.

Its how the entire industry works aside from the bargain bin scrapers, though even they're trying to get their dicks wet in the high end now.
>>
But how does downgrading the resolution change the power consumption? are they actually turning off pixels?
>>
>>55903347
It lowers the gpu load marginally. Doesn't do shit in reality. You'll get better results by lowering your brightness a few notches.
>>
>>55901395
>why do we need resolutions greater than 1080p in portable smartphones
Looks like you fell for a meme yourself. Even 720p is plenty for sub 6" screens. 1080/1200p is fine for tablets up to 10", maybe even 12" and 1600p does fine upwards 17" laptops.

>>55902950
Few generations being since S6? OLED had too many problems and too low brightness before.
>>
>>55903300
>Its how the entire industry works aside from the bargain bin scrapers, though even they're trying to get their dicks wet in the high end now.

Nah, it's just that mid-range devices have quickly started to lose appeal because the market is a bunch of niche poorfag hobbyists.

Either you can't afford a nice phone and instead just get low end devices and replace them frequently, or you can afford an installment plan to get a new phone every year or two. The market for mid-range devices has shrunk because depending on how you work these installment plans, you can get yourself a new flagship every year for like $240 spread out with one of these plans, so why put down $250 all at once on a device that is decidedly worse? On the flip side of that, why spend $250 on a device that cuts corners everywhere, when you can get a decent device for $100 that cuts the same corners while being a much smaller investment?
>>
>>55903347
No, they're assuming less power consumption not directly from the panel draw but from less CPU and GPU usage (less calculations in 3d games because lower resolution and so on).
>>
>>55901395
Poor battery only compared to feature phones. S7 battery can go two days without charging
>>
>>55903407
>Few generations being since S6? OLED had too many problems and too low brightness before.
Note 4 came first.
Note 4, S6, Note 5, S7, Note 7. They all use different displays.
>>
>>55901551
>Using your phone as your primary media consumption device is fucking retarded

Yeah, it is. If you're limited to 100 meg downloads on an iPhone that is.
>>
>>55903538
Is this a meme?
>>
>>55903202
Samsung is known for their OLED displays, iPhones are still considered best in the LCD category. And all this with ~720p resolutions.
>>
>>55903581

>>
>>55901551
Smartphones aren't necessarily phones anymore as they are mini-computers that just so happen to make phone calls. Honestly, when you see someone using a smartphone, how often are they actually using it as a telephone versus browsing the web, playing games, listening to music, etc.? This is why phones have been getting bigger over the past few years, people use them more as portable computers than as telephones.

Limiting app downloads to under 100mb is bad how? If you use a data plan that's not unlimited it's great.

Let's talk about how you can download or install any apps on android if you have less than 400mb free though.
>>
>>55903488
Ah, fair enough. Though Note 4 came out in 2014, so it's basically "since 2014".

Samsung had very nice screens before but these were excellent at some parts and sub par at others, while Apple ones were always very consistent and still are. Then again ... doesn't Apple use Samsung or LG screens either way?
>>
>>55903466

Is there even a reason to "upgrade" from Note 3 to Note 7?

My note 3 is quite battered and i'd like to get a phone similar to the Note 3, but the 7 seems disappointing
>>

>>
>>55903680
Waterproofing is reason enough
Longer battery life
Hugely improved s pen experience
There's loads of reasons, if counting from Note 3 to 5 then there won't be much but the 7 is excellent enough, now that the UFS storage accepts SD cards
>>
>>55903658
What if you don't have a data cap or have a large data cap? I've got 5GB a month for my plan. 100MB is 2% of my monthly allowance. Why shouldn't I be able to download that over 4G? Because Applel says so?
>>55903685
My bad, I thought you were correcting Samsung in that.
>>
>>55903658
> is bad how?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because it makes the phone LITERALLY USELESS to those who do not use WiFi at all but rely solely on LTE. This should be a warning, not a restriction. It's not as bad in the US as it is in Europe though as most of Europe has unlimited high speed LTE networks on which most people rely solely on.

>>55903714
The waterproofing alone doesn't convince me really, the battery life has gotten rapidly worse after i started using it as a hotspot a year ago.

So is any samsung phone worth getting? They all look good on paper like the s7. But people always tell me they´re getting laggy after time.
Owning an iphone 5s right now I want to upgrade in the future.
Is there an android phone that can bring me the same smooth experience as my iphone does?
Price does not matter, screen should be big since that´s the only thing currently concerning me.
Or just wait for the iphone 7?
>>
>>55903953
The S pen can be used underwater now, has 4096 pressure levels, basically more sensitive, the button has been moved slightly upwards to reduce misclicks. Probably a lot more
If you use the pen a lot it's worth upgrading but since you rely on removable batteries there's not much for you though

That hugely depends on what do you actually use your phone as. I don't know what lag people are saying because my Note 2014 tablet is as smooth as ever years later.
If you really want a smooth experience get a phone with UFS storage, it's like a mini ssd and since this tech is developed by them most Samsung phones have it.

Personally S7, Note 7 and A7 are the ones I'd consider if I were to buy new ones, those have huge screens too.

For example I can run an app in the backround for lets say 3 hours on my iphone and still return to it via multitasking without having it to restart. My sister owns the s5 and she often talks about her phone crashing once in a while and feeling "not as responsive".

I dont play any games but I love to watch videos and do stuff like browsing and youtube.
